Leading Horses To Water During A Pandemic: Assuring Communication Learning For "Quants", Thomas Hall
Leading Horses To Water During A Pandemic: Assuring Communication Learning For "Quants", Thomas Hall
International Journal for Business Education
Students who are attracted to quantitative disciplines of study can be reluctant to devote much attention to the important task of communicating, and previous research (Hostager, 2018) has identified statistically significant differences in learning approaches by major among undergraduate business students. This paper presents results of learning assurance for writing skills (direct measures) even when the content of the course relates to the highly quantitative topics of data analytics and finance. The approach combines various pedagogical methods in an undergraduate, writing-intensive setting: traditional testing but in an iterative framework, “flipped classroom” intensive work using spreadsheet software, repeated submission of brief …

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
Educator preparation programs and school districts continue to strive to meet their commitment to better prepare future teachers for entry into the field of education. For more than 100 years, beginning as a normal school, a midwest university has had a strong reputation for the preparation of teachers. After a significant revision to the curriculum to one driven by competencies, this university increased field experiences for teacher candidates, including a culminating year out called Residency Practicum and Student Teaching. Over the course of the undergraduate program, candidates work toward achievement of competencies assigned throughout the coursework and aligned to state …

Extension Administrators’ Perspectives On Employee Competencies And Characteristics, Jeremy Elliott-Engel, Donna Westfall-Rudd, Megan Seibel, Eric Kaufman, Rama Radhakrishna
The Journal of Extension
Extension administrators discussed the competencies and characteristics of Extension professionals as they explored how Extension will need adapt to changing clientele, both in who they are and how they want to receive information. Extension education curriculum is not fully preparing future Extension employees in all required competencies, falling short on use of technology, diversity and pluralism, volunteer development, marketing, and public relations, risk management, and the community development process. Additionally, the Extension educator workforce development pipeline is not preparing a demographically representative population, leaving state administrators struggling to hire prepared professionals, especially those with in-culture competency (e.g., racial and ethnic …

Competency-Based Practicum Evaluation Tools For Family Nurse Practitioner Programs, Angelica Renteria
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Problem: Training family nurse practitioners (FNPs) was identified as a concern within a university MSN FNP program. A major gap identified was that student practicum evaluation tools needed to be competency-based.
Context: The paradigm shift from content-focused curriculum to competency-based curriculum has led to a refinement in program accreditation and increased national certification requirements.
Interventions: Revision (aligned with NONPF core competencies and AACN Master’s essentials), adoption, implementation, and evaluation of competency-based FNP practicum evaluation tools and training of faculty and preceptors to use the revised tools and one-minute preceptor model were the interventions in this project.
Measures: …
College Student Confidence In Career Readiness Competencies, April Pickett
College Student Confidence In Career Readiness Competencies, April Pickett
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
There is an expectation of college students to transition to their post college workplace with the necessary competencies to be successful. This study sought to explore college students’ perspective on their confidence in career readiness competencies and the experiences and activities in and out of the classroom that they feel contribute to their career readiness. Current college students may provide perspectives that illuminate how to design and develop student activities and events for workplace preparedness; therefore, an exploration into student experiences with university curricula, programs, and student services may give some insight to the learning environments that facilitate opportunities to …

Curriculum For An Introductory Computer Science Course: Identifying Recommendations From Academia And Industry, Simon G. Sultana, Philip A. Reed
STEMPS Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to define the course content for a university introductory computer science course based on regional needs. Delphi methodology was used to identify the competencies, programming languages, and assessments that academic and industry experts felt most important. Four rounds of surveys were conducted to rate the items in the straw models, to determine the entries deemed most important, and to understand their relative importance according to each group. The groups were then asked to rank the items in each category and attempt to reach consensus as determined by Kendall's coefficient of concordance. The academic experts …

Defining The Competencies, Programming Languages, And Assessments For An Introductory Computer Science Course, Simon Sultana
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to define the competencies, programming languages, and assessments for an introductory computer science course at a small private liberal arts university. Three research questions were addressed that involved identifying the competencies, programming languages, and assessments that academic and industry experts in California’s Central Valley felt most important and appropriate for an introduction to computer science course.
The Delphi methodology was used to collect data from the two groups of experts with various backgrounds related to computing. The goal was to find consensus among the individual groups to best define aspects that would best comprise …

Teaching Evaluator Competencies: An Examination Of Doctoral Programs, Susanne Anna Maria Kaesbauer
Teaching Evaluator Competencies: An Examination Of Doctoral Programs, Susanne Anna Maria Kaesbauer
Doctoral Dissertations
Program evaluators may currently enter the field of evaluation through a variety of avenues. Entry into the profession at this time is uncontrolled by a professional body of evaluators, as an evaluator certification process does not yet exist in the United States of America. One avenue for evaluators to enter into the profession is through a graduate training program in evaluation. This study sought to understand the preparedness of evaluators who enter the profession in this manner. Specifically, this study aimed to determine the current state of the teaching of evaluator competencies, across 26 doctoral evaluation programs in the United …
