G94-1192 Feeding Dairy Cows With Limited High Quality Forage, Rick J. Grant
G94-1192 Feeding Dairy Cows With Limited High Quality Forage, Rick J. Grant
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
During excessively wet or dry years, there is a wide range of forage quality with most dairy producers forced to feed at least some moderate to poor quality forage. This NebGuide discusses basic alterations in the feeding strategy to help cope with minimal reductions in milk yield.

G94-1234 Should You Consider Expanding Your Dairy Herd?, Jeffrey F. Keown
G94-1234 Should You Consider Expanding Your Dairy Herd?, Jeffrey F. Keown
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses both the benefits and possible drawbacks from expanding an existing dairy operation.
Nebraska's dairy industry is going through a transition. Producers are beginning to ask the question, "Should I expand, and if so, how large should my herd become?" Before considering this issue, the producer should first ask, "Do I really want to expand?" Expansion can be, and in many cases is, a traumatic experience, not only to the producer, but also to the producer's family. Every segment of the dairy enterprise should be consulted before making a decision. Call a family gathering and discuss this question …
Teaching Goals, Assessment, Academic Freedom And Higher Learning, Thomas Angelo
Teaching Goals, Assessment, Academic Freedom And Higher Learning, Thomas Angelo
Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives
In this brief essay, I'm going to try to convince you that examining our teaching goals carefully--and balancing them against our students' learning goals and colleagues' teaching goals--can help us become more effective, and perhaps even excellent college teachers.
The Why Of Teacher/Student Relationships, Richard G. Tiberius
The Why Of Teacher/Student Relationships, Richard G. Tiberius
Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives
I heard it again last week, "Yeah, she has a good relationship with her students, but can she teach?", as if the two were completely separate entities, like the icing and the cake. But a teacher's relationship with learners is not icing. It is an essential component of the teaching and learning process. Plumbers and computer technicians may be able to perform useful services on sinks and computers without entering into relation with them or with their owners but teaching simply cannot happen without teachers entering into relation with their students. Moreover, the teacher's success in facilitating learning is directly …

The Effectiveness Of An Intervention Program To Improve Performance Of Low-Achieving Students On The Literacy Passport Test, Harriet Elizabeth Bauer
The Effectiveness Of An Intervention Program To Improve Performance Of Low-Achieving Students On The Literacy Passport Test, Harriet Elizabeth Bauer
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in achievement scores and pass rates on Virginia's Literacy Passport Test between students who volunteered for and received additional instruction, students who volunteered for but did not receive the instruction, and students who neither volunteered for nor received interventional instruction in a program for rising sixth graders identified as potentially at-risk of initially failing the LPT.;It was hypothesized that (1) volunteers' scores of those who attended the summer program would show higher achievement and pass rates than either the scores of the volunteers without additional instruction and …
An Examination Of The Relationships Among Learning Style, Attitudes, And Outcomes Of Computer-Assisted Instruction, Daniel Glen Wilson
An Examination Of The Relationships Among Learning Style, Attitudes, And Outcomes Of Computer-Assisted Instruction, Daniel Glen Wilson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This research was based upon a hypothesized AptitudeTreatment Interaction (ATI). More specifically, the research investigated the relationships between student learning style (aptitude) and student outcomes with computer-assisted instruction (treatment). These outcomes included student achievement with computer-assisted instruction (CAI) and student attitude toward CAI.
To examine these relationships, a researcher-developed CAI program on light and color theory was validated and administered to 144 students in an educational media course at the University of Northern Iowa. Participants in the study were first asked to complete the Grasha-Riechmann Student Learning Style Scales (GRSLSS) inventory along with a demographic survey. Next, each participant completed …
Aids Education: The Effect Of Three Instructional Methods On Retention Of Changes In Knowledge, Attitudes, And Intention To Act, Denise Kerns Schares
Aids Education: The Effect Of Three Instructional Methods On Retention Of Changes In Knowledge, Attitudes, And Intention To Act, Denise Kerns Schares
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of three instructional methods (unit only, unit plus infusion, and infusion only) for teaching high school students about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Education, offered consistently and over time, can assist individuals in developing positive health behaviors associated with the prevention of AIDS. Successful implementation of community and school-based education programs can save lives in the years ahead (Taff,1987).
Four sections (N = 80) of a health education course were randomly assigned to one of four treatment conditions. The unit only treatment consisted of the presentation of the 4-session, Red …

Computer Education Needs And Usage In Bond, Fayette, And Effingham Counties, Derrold D. Jones
Masters Theses
This study focused on the availability of and use of computer hardware and software by high school students. The students researched lived within the area served by Okaw Area Vocational Center, which includes Bond, Fayette, and Effingham Counties in Illinois. Parents, educators, and persons from business and industry were surveyed to determine educational needs and expectations related to computer use. Survey results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlational procedures. This study was developed to assist the Okaw Vocational Center area schools in the development of curricula based on technological data. The findings of this study support reference being made …

The Perry Model
The theme of Perry's work is that no matter how unclouded our message or lucid our meaning, students make their own meanings from their own cognitive structures. Our students come to us naive epistemologists, replete with mistaken views of the nature of knowledge and its acquisition. Perry charts their odyssey from naiveté to maturity through stages where these restrictive cognitive chrysalises are outgrown for increasingly more subtle structures. Briefly, the journey involves the following.
Learning A Lot Vs. Looking Good: A Source Of Anxiety For Students, Anastasia S. Hagen
Learning A Lot Vs. Looking Good: A Source Of Anxiety For Students, Anastasia S. Hagen
Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives
Many teachers have observed that some of their best students also appear to be the students with the greatest amount of anxiety towards school. Teachers have often asked themselves, "Why is this bright, capable student feeling so anxious about what they will be asked to do in my course?" This article is an attempt to provide some insight into this situation with respect to the way students set academic goals.
Changing Priorities In Higher Education: Promotion And Tenure, Robert Diamond
Changing Priorities In Higher Education: Promotion And Tenure, Robert Diamond
Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives
A recent study involving over 23,000 faculty chairs, deans and administrators at research universities indicated that even those most directly involved with the present reward system feel that the balance between research and teaching needs to be modified. Most significantly, the results indicate that an effort to modify the system to recognize and reward teaching would be supported by a majority of those surveyed. It may be the time to propose a change in the system.
What They Don't Know Can Hurt Them: The Role Of Prior Knowledge In Learning, Marilla Svinicki
What They Don't Know Can Hurt Them: The Role Of Prior Knowledge In Learning, Marilla Svinicki
Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives
Discusses prior knowledge and current learning, and using prior knowledge in instruction.
The lesson we take from the research on prior knowledge is simply this: students are not blank slates on which our words on inscribed. The students bring more to the interpretation of the situation than we realize. What they learn is conditioned by what they already know. What they know can be as damaging as what they don't know.
