Creating A Culturally Relevant Statistics Assignment On Z-Scores, Grace Pai

Culturally relevant teaching or pedagogy has become increasingly popular both in practice and in research, but there are still few curricular resources for instructors to use, particularly for a college-level mathematics course. Departing from the question “relevant to whom,” this article illustrates how to design a statistics assignment on z-scores that is culturally relevant to students based on their prior experiences. Ultimately, the author shares design principles—which includes the importance of considering student trauma—that can be transferable to any statistics or quantitative analysis/reasoning class.

Professional Noticing On A Statistical Task, Courtney Nagle, Stephanie Casey, Michele Carney

This study explores secondary in-service mathematics teachers’ professional noticing of student work on a statistical task involving informally placing a line of best fit. The manuscript describes how teachers interpreted student work on the line of best fit task, how teachers responded to the student work, and associations between their interpretations and consequential responses. Findings related to teachers’ interpretations of student work revealed that teachers were often evaluative and tended to describe both students’ processes and underlying understanding, although the descriptions of understanding were frequently unsupported by the work. The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is an international comparative study of student achievement directed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). PISA 2015 represents the sixth such study since PISA was first conducted in 2000. Seventy-two OECD countries or partner economies participated in PISA 2015. In Australia, PISA is managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and is jointly funded by the Australian Government and the state and territory governments. In 2005 the American Statistical Association (ASA) endorsed the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report. This report has had a profound impact on the teaching of introductory statistics in two- and four-year institutions, and the six recommendations put forward in the report have stood the test of time. We plan to make a case for the necessity of GAISE-aligned college courses in order to prepare future teachers to teach in Common Core K-12 classrooms. Beginning with an overview of the parallel evolutions of Cobb/MAA suggestions - GAISE recommendations for teaching and NCTM process standards - Common Core mathematical practices, we will emphasize that we should be modeling what researchers continually conclude are best practices for teaching/learning across the K-16 continuum. Every two years a survey of custom operators is conducted to determine the current rates charged for specific machinery operations. The survey is divided into Part I (EC12-823) and Part II (EC12-826). Part I includes the spring and summer operations such as planting and small grains harvest, and Part II includes information about fall and miscellaneous operations.

The information presented here should be used only as a guide. Rates change from year to year due to cost changes and the availability of custom operators.

There is a great potential opportunity to use portable physical activity monitoring devices as data collection tools for educational purposes. Using one such device, we designed and implemented a weeklong workshop with high school students to test the utility of such technology. During that intervention, students performed data investigations of physical activity that culminated in the design and implementation of their own studies. Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - All Scholarship

The design and development of a prototype computer-based instruction (CBI) module is described. The module covers introductory structural analysis techniques and demonstrates the practicality of CBI for undergraduate engineering education. The module’s generic learning objectives are used to develop a set of guiding principles for CBI development. Choice of authoring software and the module architecture are presented, followed by the details of the user interface, logic, and screen layout. The module design and software development process outlined here are easily extended to computer-based tutorials that present problem solving methods for engineering, mathematics, and the natural sciences.
