Introducing New Content Into A School Mathematics Curriculum: The Case Of Cryptology, Kalvin Whittles, Ole-Einar Torkildsen, Cyril Julie, Trygve Breiteig

Kalvin Whittles Dr.

Developing learning resources forms an important part of a school mathematics curriculum implementation. This chapter argues for a change in the way we do analysis for developing learning resources. An argument is forwarded for an undertstanding of the main concepts within the topic as well as a historical and didactical analysis thereof in order to make statements with respect to the teaching and learning of the topic. For this analysis, the topic of cryptology is used as an example. The chapter concludes with recommendations to curriculum designers to revisit the accepted practice to adept already historicalle en didactically analysed materials, …

The Mean Reply Depth Algorithm: A Correlational Study Of Quantitative Versus Qualitative Measures Of Threaded Discourse, Sandie Waters Dec 2007

The Mean Reply Depth Algorithm: A Correlational Study Of Quantitative Versus Qualitative Measures Of Threaded Discourse, Sandie Waters

Sandie H Waters

In the world of online learning, instructors look for the keys that open the door to student learning, engagement, satisfaction, retention, and ability to transfer newly acquired knowledge to real-world situations. One of the most common communication tools in online courses is the threaded discussion. With a growing number of students participating in online education comes the potential for an increase in faculty load. The reviewed courses provided over 1500 threads for two sections of a graduate course at a Mountain Region University. The number of threads that are produced by a student accounts for countless hours of reading, processing, …

Cryptology: A Didactical Transposition Into A Grade 10 School Mathematics Classroom, Kalvin Whittles

Kalvin Whittles Dr.

This study is an extension of a Master’s study, entitled Realistic Mathematics Education and the strategies grade 8 learners develop for the solution of two simultaneous linear equations. The current study investigates how new content could be introduced into a school mathematics curriculum. The new content under discussion for this study is the topic of cryptology. Two design research cycles were carried out. For the first design research cycle there were three teaching experiments with teachers, grade 10 learners and students as participants. Seven activities were developed for the second design research cycles which were worked through with grade 10 …

The Medieval Writing Workshop, Alex Mueller Dec 2007

The Medieval Writing Workshop, Alex Mueller

Alex Mueller

If we compare elementary and secondary school classrooms today with their grammar school predecessors of the Middle Ages, we might find few similarities. The terrifying image of the medieval schoolmaster, seated in a chair with his birch in hand, ready to strike supplicant schoolboys for incorrect answers, does not match our more recent and comforting portrait of the teacher who circulates throughout the classroom and nurtures students through a student-centered curriculum. Yet, as an educator trained as both a medievalist and a high school English teacher, I am regularly provoked by the affinities I discover in medieval and modern pedagogies, …

Developing Problem-Based Curriculum: Unlocking Student Success Utilizing Critical Thinking And Inquiry, William Robertson Dec 2007

Developing Problem-Based Curriculum: Unlocking Student Success Utilizing Critical Thinking And Inquiry, William Robertson

William H. Robertson

This book utilizes a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach to curriculum development and delivery. PBL is an inquiry-based approach that can be defined as both a curriculum and a process. The curriculum consists of carefully selected and designed problems that engage the learner in the process of acquiring critical knowledge, developing proficiency in problem solving, engaging in self-directed learning, and participating in collaborative teams. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is a multidisciplinary approach that integrates effective teaching and learning practices with computer technology. This curriculum integration process engages students in collaborative research that can be shared in the classroom, across a community or …

The Risk Intelligence Conundrum And Its Impact On Governance., Mark F. Loves Dec 2007

The Risk Intelligence Conundrum And Its Impact On Governance., Mark F. Loves

Mark F Loves

This paper looks at intelligence led strategic planning, specifically within the context of an operational private sector corporate security unit which the author managed from 1994 to 2005. It examines the role, mission and objectives of the unit, with specific emphasis on management models, planning frameworks, policy and strategy, client relations and performance measuring. It develops the concept that risk assessment and intelligence development are in fact the same process, acting to direct governance and informing decision making at both tactical and strategic levels.

Online Education For Nontraditional Adult Students: Perceptions And Attitudes Of Emergency Services Workers In Asynchronous Learning Environments, Dr. R. Jeffery Maxfield Dec 2007

Online Education For Nontraditional Adult Students: Perceptions And Attitudes Of Emergency Services Workers In Asynchronous Learning Environments, Dr. R. Jeffery Maxfield

R. Jeffery Maxfield

The goal of this research was to better understand the lived experiences and perceptions of nontraditional, adult college students in an asynchronous online environment. Contemporary researchers have investigated the differences between online education and the traditional, in-class learning. Most of the work has been done in quantitative methodologies, focusing on the similarities and differences in cognitive achievement. The extant literature is replete with studies and positions claiming little or no difference between the two delivery methods. However, most research is not presented in a theoretical construct; therefore, it is difficult to create a nexus between one study and the next. …

Health Education Achievement Test, Dr. Uche J. Obidiegwu Dec 2007

Health Education Achievement Test, Dr. Uche J. Obidiegwu

Prof. Uche J. Obidiegwu

This study developed and validated a diagnostic health education achievement test for adult learners in Anambra State. Two research questions and a research hypothesis guided the study. The instrument was pretested. Following the result of the pilot test, a total of 96 multiple choice test items were administered to 1, 342 adult learners. The analysis of the data was carried out using item analysis. Kuder-Richardson formula ‘21’ was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument. Finally, t-test was used to test the hypothesis. Based on the results, some recommendations were made.

An Act Of Translation: The Need To Understand Students' Understanding Of Critical Thinking In The Undergraduate Classroom, Tiffany Gayle Chenault, Elizabeth Duclos-Orsello

Tiffany Chenault

This article extends and expands the existing literature on critical thinking (CT) by both
establishing the need for more student-centered research on the topic and reporting on
the findings of a CT research project with two central, related goals: 1) To record and
analyze undergraduate students’ definition of CT and 2) To create an easy-to-use instrument
that can assist faculty members across many disciplines identify and understand
their students’ use of the term so as to improve both teaching and learning. In this
article an overview of the limits of existing CT research is followed by a discussion of
