Social media is a relevant and powerful instrument of communication in higher education, especially in the college age population. The use of social media in and out of the classroom on the college campus allows faculty to meet students where they are. Content shared by faculty on social media is a means to continue to educate our students and alumni outside of the classroom and build relationships regardless of geographic boundaries. Ten Ouachita alumni received the university’s Alumni Milestone Award in conjunction with Ouachita’s Homecoming celebration Sept. 30-Oct. 2. Based on their professional achievements, community service and dedication to their alma mater, they were chosen by a committee of Ouachita faculty and staff and Ouachita President Ben Sells.
“Every year, several exemplary graduates are nominated for the Alumni Milestone Award,” Sells said. “They’re all worthy recipients, so we aspire to select a group of inductees that each year and over time live lives of service and best represent the generations of extraordinary students who are the heart of Ouachita.”

Jon Merryman, Ouachita Baptist University’s director of alumni relations and the Ouachita Student Foundation, recently was appointed as a commissioner to the Alumni Affairs Directors Group with the national Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU). Merryman is one of seven directors from the U.S. and Canada appointed to the group by the president of CCCU, Shirley Hoogstra.

The literature on fraternities and sexual violence has suggested that some fraternity members are more likely to adopt and maintain the values found in hegemonic masculinity (Sanday, 2007). This is significant as it can aid our understanding of how fraternities and hegemonic masculinity play a part in promoting and engaging in sexual violence. This paper investigates existing literature on masculinity and how hegemonic masculinity is enforced through fraternity participation. The literature review explores condoned behaviors and beliefs that endorse negative masculine values, which are fostered in the social fraternity lifestyle between brothers. It’s been 20 years since a group of Ouachita Baptist University students and three of their professors, returning from a mission trip to Europe, crashed on the final leg of their trip in Little Rock on American Airlines Flight 1420. Survivors returned to Arkadelphia this past weekend to mark the 20th anniversary of that fateful night, June 1, 1999.

Ouachita Professor Emerita Virginia Queen Remembered For Life Of Music And Service, Trennis Henderson, Ouachita News Bureau

Miss Virginia Queen, Professor Emerita of Music at Ouachita Baptist University, died Wednesday, March 29, at age 96.
Miss Queen, who graduated from Ouachita in 1944 with Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees, also earned a Master of Music degree from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. She taught at Prescott High School and the Tennessee College for Women before joining the Ouachita music faculty in 1946. She retired in 1986 after 40 years of service at Ouachita. In recent years, she resided at Parkway Village in Little Rock.

Dr. J.D. Patterson, a noted alumnus, benefactor and former trustee of Ouachita Baptist University, died Sunday, March 26, at age 90.
University trustees affirmed Dr. Patterson’s lifelong commitment to Ouachita by naming the J.D. Patterson School of Natural Sciences in his honor in 2002. A 1947 Ouachita alumnus, he received Ouachita’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1984 and an honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1999. He served two terms on the Ouachita Board of Trustees from 2005 through 2011.

Honoring its seventh class of Ouachita Alumni Milestone Awards recipients, Ouachita Baptist University recognized outstanding graduates from the classes of 1966, 1976, 1986, 1996 and 2006 at halftime of the Homecoming football game Oct. 15. The alumni honorees were selected by a committee of Ouachita faculty and staff to represent their milestone reunion classes.
This year’s Homecoming festivities also included the presentation of a Worthy Ouachitonian Award by Ouachita President Ben Sells.
