A Visit To The Kilns: A Formative Experience For Two Christian Teacher Educators, Karen S. Buchanan, Thomas D. Buchanan

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

The C.S. Lewis Study Centre at the Kilns is located near Oxford, England in the previous home of C.S. Lewis, the highly influential 20th century Christian intellectual and apologist. Two professors, who coupled a brief stay at the Kilns with an inquiry into the life of Lewis and his writings, present insights into their work as teacher educators. Three main areas are explored. The first area is the nature of our work, including a discussion of the distinct roles associated with Christian teacher educators and the importance of professional community. Next is a discussion on the quality of our work, …

An Introduction To The Twisselmann And Draycott Articles, Tim Stranske Jan 2014

An Introduction To The Twisselmann And Draycott Articles, Tim Stranske

Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal

Solomon (Proverbs 18:17) indicates that hearing one side of an argument sounds convincing until you hear the opposing point of view. The next two articles discuss conceptions of social justice, both emanating from scholars that have studied biblical theology and social justice, applying those fields of study to educational systems. Twisselmann, a public school teacher of philosophy and adjunct professor at Biola University, questions whether critical theory’s lack of a metaphysical component provides any valid grounding to make social justice judgments, while Draycott, a theologian at Talbot School of Theology, argues for Christians to humbly seek common ground with others …

Justice, The Gospel, And People With Disabilities, David W. Anderson Jan 2014

Justice, The Gospel, And People With Disabilities, David W. Anderson

Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal

The focus of this essay is on biblical justice in relation to persons with disabilities. The World Health Organization (2012) estimates that 15% of the world’s population includes people with disabilities. This staggering percentage means that there are over 47 million Americans with disabilities today and over one billion worldwide. As an outgrowth of the Civil Rights movement in the United States, the situation for some people with disabilities in the United States has continued to improve since the 1970s. However, in much of the world, individuals and families affected by disability continue to face injustice in the from of …

The American Way To Choose Ice Cream, Andy Draycott Jan 2014

The American Way To Choose Ice Cream, Andy Draycott

Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal

response is offered to Eric Twisselmann’s analysis and critique of social justice pedagogy, highlighting areas of theological agreement. An understanding of justice as social is explored through the concept of communication. Education as social communication of intergenerational learning is shaped by concerns for justice. The connection of justice and truth expounded by Twisselmann is critically endorsed, surfacing questions about the importance of choice in his account. How Christians may peaceably suffer as witness in current pedagogical debates is explored in final reflections.

Helping The Poor And Needy Through Education: Examining The Similarities Between Poverty Education Research And Orphan Education, Calvin Roso Jan 2014

Helping The Poor And Needy Through Education: Examining The Similarities Between Poverty Education Research And Orphan Education, Calvin Roso

Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal

God’s care and compassion for the less fortunate is mentioned throughout the Bible. This emphasis reminds the Christian educator that the act of helping the helpless is not a suggestion, but one’s Christian duty. James 1:27 says, “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you” (NLT). Jeremiah 22:16 reminds us that to “know God” means helping the widow and the orphan. Likewise, Hosea 12:6 tells us to return to God, “Hold fast to love and mercy, to righteousness and justice, …

Truth, Justice Or The American Way?, Eric Twisselmann Jan 2014

Truth, Justice Or The American Way?, Eric Twisselmann

Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal

A review of current philosophy, research, and practice regarding the teaching of social justice reveals an unsettling paradox: While there has been a significant movement among educators to infuse and promote ideals of social justice within their curricula, this movement has been largely operating within a postmodern framework which, at its foundation, cannot sustain a unified theory of justice. Within such a postmodern framework, social justice pedagogy may be, at best, a well-intentioned but terribly fragmented social experiment, and at its worst, an unsettling prosecution of political hegemony. This paper will investigate the philosophical roots of this disconnect between theory …

Renewing Our Shared Purpose: Considering Ernest L. Boyer’S General Education Vision For Christian Colleges And Universities, Cynthia Wells

Higher Education Faculty Scholarship

Best Practices For Online Theological Ministry Preparation: A Delphi Method Study, John Cartwright Jan 2014

Best Practices For Online Theological Ministry Preparation: A Delphi Method Study, John Cartwright

Faculty Dissertations

This doctoral thesis intended to provide a clear vision of best practices in the area of online theological ministry training at the graduate level by consulting experts in the field. The research question that needed to be answered was, “What are the best practices for ministry preparation in online theological education?”

Despite tremendous growth in online learning even among theological institutions, casual observations suggest that the decision to offer online programs may not always have been rooted in deep pedagogical or theological reflection. In other words, in the quest to utilize online education as a viable option for degree preparation, …

Exploring Spirituality In Teaching Within A Christian School Context Through Collaborative Action Research, Alaster Gibson Jan 2014

Exploring Spirituality In Teaching Within A Christian School Context Through Collaborative Action Research, Alaster Gibson

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This article reports on a collaborative action research project conducted in New Zealand, during 2012, exploring spirituality in teaching within a Christian school context. The experienced primary school teacher participant chose to take action around the issue of personal fear and insecurity which were believed to be hindering professional growth and relationships. Through self-directed inquiry, critical reflective journaling, Bible study, fellowship and prayer with trusted friends, the teacher experienced a renewed sense of peace and freedom in Christ. This personal transformation was believed to be influential on subsequent professional practice, assisting the teacher to become more relational, responsive and compassionate. …

Researching The Teaching Context: Faithful Practice, Geoff Beech Jan 2014

Researching The Teaching Context: Faithful Practice, Geoff Beech

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Christian teachers are called to a teaching practice that is biblically grounded or based on a biblical world and life view, but can the same imperative be applied to those wishing to conduct research in Christian education contexts? This paper considers one approach to qualitative methodologies that considers the ultimate goal of truth-seeking in research in the sciences to be a deeply religious activity. The ultimate goal of biblically grounded research is proposed as being greatest-commandment driven, and to accomplish this, an epistemological base that is holistic and relational is proposed. This epistemology moves from a biblically oriented sense of …

Non-Believing Students At A Christian Tertiary Institution: What Drew Them, What They Expected, And What They Found, Ruth Smith Jan 2014

Non-Believing Students At A Christian Tertiary Institution: What Drew Them, What They Expected, And What They Found, Ruth Smith

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Many Christian tertiary educators share a passion to see holistic transformation in students’ lives. This qualitative study grew out of the desire to explore whether students who are not Christ-followers, but who apply to study within an overtly Christian context, experience such change. It investigated why they chose to apply, their initial expectations, the positives and challenges of their lived experiences, and self-perceptions of any holistic change. While geographical proximity appeared to be the strongest motivator, many did experience holistic change during their time of study. The most daunting challenge appeared to be the biblical critique required in assignment and …

Eating Baby Food Or Eating Meat? Student Voices On The “Everyday” Use Of Powerpoint In University Teaching, Christina Belcher, Kimberly Maich Jan 2014

Eating Baby Food Or Eating Meat? Student Voices On The “Everyday” Use Of Powerpoint In University Teaching, Christina Belcher, Kimberly Maich

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This research study centres on the use of PowerPoint in university classes. It poses the question: How do students perceive PowerPoint specifically and technology overall impacting their university experiences as a process for learning, as an element of social community building and as a worldview lens for examining and critiquing their world? In a qualitative ethnographic narrative, based on the work of Dorothy Smith, student voices in the everyday are heard in order to provide insider perceptions on the key question. Twenty-four volunteer participants signed consent to engage in focus groups flowing from 3, twenty-one hour face-to-face courses. These courses …

Iccte Spotlight: Josiah Philipsen

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

As a Technical Editor for ICCTE and a Project Manager at Miller Technologies, I have a passion for helping others with technology. I remember a fellow student in the third grade asking me how to fix a problem in Microsoft Word. My reaction was to click yes to everything that popped up on the screen, because that made sense to me. I ended up erasing the entire document … oops, but my passion for helping others in their technology grew with a little more skill. I enjoy tech questions and getting to meet new people. Understanding The Times: A Causal/Comparative Study Of The Effectiveness Of A Christian Worldview Curriculum In Helping Students Develop A Christian Worldview, Donald Barrows Jan 2014

Understanding The Times: A Causal/Comparative Study Of The Effectiveness Of A Christian Worldview Curriculum In Helping Students Develop A Christian Worldview, Donald Barrows

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Christian educators are concerned about the development of a Christian worldview in their students. They also desire that their students maintain that worldview after graduation. In this study, the author attempts to determine the effectiveness of the Understanding the Times Christian worldview curriculum in helping students develop a Christian worldview. To do this, a causal/comparative research design was used as participants took a worldview test to determine the extent to which their worldviews compared with biblical teachings. The researcher sampled a random sample of Christian high school graduates who have taken the yearlong Understanding the Times Christian worldview course at …
