Exploring The Use Of Twitter Opinion Mining (Tom) In Marketing Courses, Cuauhtémoc Luna-Nevarez
WCBT Faculty Publications
This paper discusses the use of social media mining (and more specifically, Twitter opinion mining) in marketing courses in order to help students understand current marketing events or phenomena. Social media mining refers to “the use of basic concepts and principal algorithms suitable for investigating massive social media data; it discusses theories and methodologies from different disciplines and encompasses the tools to formally represent, measure, model, and mine meaningful patterns from large-scale social media data” (Zafarani et al. 2014, p. 16). Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram provide opportunities to explore consumer preferences, opinions and behaviors through …

[Excerpt] "Inventors pursue patents and authors receive copyrights.
No special education is required for either endeavor, and nothing
precludes a person from being both an author and an inventor.
Inventors working on patentable industrial projects geared
toward commercial exploitation tend to be scientists or engineers.
Authors, with the exception of those writing computer code, tend
to be educated or trained in the creative arts, such as visual art,
performance art, music, dance, acting, creative writing, film
making, and architectural drawing. There is a well-warranted
societal supposition that most of the inventors of patentable
inventions are male. Assumptions about the genders …

An Outcome-Based Competency Model For Systems Engineering Trainees, Vanessa J. Pietrzyk
An Outcome-Based Competency Model For Systems Engineering Trainees, Vanessa J. Pietrzyk
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Dominant theories relating to outcome-based learning and workforce competency were synthesized into a singular outcome-based competency model to evaluate systems engineering training. A baseline model was developed using leading theories from the academic literature pertaining to competencies for systems engineers across three categories: cognitive, skill-based, and behavioral. The model was further refined via qualitative and quantitative analysis of formal interviews of subject matter experts in the field of systems engineering workforce management. The refined model classifies 28 critical competencies for systems engineers into three tiers of workforce functionality: foundational, specialized, and leadership. The resultant theoretical model is both grounded in …

Surveying Labour Market Trends: A Demand And Supply Analysis Of The Quantity Surveying Profession In Ireland, Roisin Murphy
Surveying Labour Market Trends: A Demand And Supply Analysis Of The Quantity Surveying Profession In Ireland, Roisin Murphy
Conference papers
The construction and property sectors in Ireland have undergone significant change over the past decade. From a period of sustained growth in output and employment to a recession returning to the current period of expansion. While the cyclical nature of the sector and consequential impact on the labour market is widely recognized, the impact on the quantity surveying profession specifically is comparatively less well evidenced. A widespread survey of employers was undertaken to ascertain recent employment trends and likely future demand for quantity surveyors. At the same time an analysis of current enrolments on surveying programmes across the country provided …
Teaching Personal Selling With Volunteer Professional Salesperson Role-Play Scenarios, Julie B. Nelsen
Teaching Personal Selling With Volunteer Professional Salesperson Role-Play Scenarios, Julie B. Nelsen
Business Administration Faculty Scholarship
Producing what is often referred to as “career ready” graduates is a challenge that most business department faculty take seriously; after all, we are measured to some extent by the success of our students. As a faculty member with twenty-plus years of experience in competitive sales environments, I believe that it is essential to create roleplay personal selling situations for students that simulate what happens in the consultative sales environment. Providing students with realistic situations calls upon the student to perform at a higher level. It is my position that these role-plays provide the best learning outcomes when conducted with …

Teamwork: Crucible For Learning About Collaborative Leadership, Lisa Deangelis, Sherry H. Penney, Maureen A. Scully
Sherry Penney
In teaching leadership development we have developed and revised a model of teamwork and collaboration, which has yielded innovative and positive results. Our study draws on insights from more than 90 project teams, gathered over twelve years of a mid-career executive education program designed specifically to teach collaborative leadership. The teams work on a strategic dilemma with a business association or community organization, highlighting the civic engagement aspect of collaborative leadership. Teams devise their own operating procedures, refine (not simply manage) the project, create working relationships with multiple stakeholders, and present a deliverable within the nine-month span of the program. …

Employee engagement changes generationally. This literature review explores employee engagement and shared life experiences that define the characteristics of each generation; shaping generational perception on employee engagement and how each generation actually engages at work. Resultantly, generational differences, characteristics, and shared life experiences make salient how employee engagement changes.

Improving The Education Of Leaders: An Exploratory Case Study In An Undergraduate Business Leadership Course Focused On Gender, Kanina Blanchard
Improving The Education Of Leaders: An Exploratory Case Study In An Undergraduate Business Leadership Course Focused On Gender, Kanina Blanchard
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This exploratory case study is conducted in an undergraduate leadership course at a business school in Ontario. The research develops an understanding of how former students value and are influenced by leadership education that teaches a breadth of knowledges (instrumental, hermeneutic and emancipatory) and focuses on participants’ perspectives of how gender and inequality continue to impact the practice of leadership in Canada. By using document analysis and semi-structured interviews, findings emerge which provide insights into how changes in curricula and pedagogy may better prepare students of leadership to navigate the ethical and social complexities in today’s workplace.
