A study has been made to select activities and games that promote language use in the second language classroom. Low classroom and personal anxiety promote language learning; games and activities are a method of focusing the language on its message rather than its structural form. Ways for teachers to help decrease classroom pressure and encourage learning are discussed. Language games for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students are presented in the project portion of this paper and will be used as a handbook of games for English as a second language teachers.

A Creation Of Pedagogical Children's Literature That Addresses Sexual Abuse And Child Abuse In A Bilingual Format, Karen J. Hernandez

The purpose was to create a series of stories for children that deal with sexual and child abuse. The stories were written in Spanish and English. Special attention was given to make them relative to the Hispanic culture. Background research supported the existence of sexual and child abuse. Symptoms were listed and the rights and responsibilities of teachers to report suspected cases were identified. The use of creative fiction and bibliotherapy was suggested for prevention programs in an elementary curriculum.

Methods and procedures for teaching reading readiness skills to primary Spanish-speaking children were developed. The methods and procedures were developed to enrich the basic teaching of reading programs and to provide a means for development of specific skills that the standard program failed to develop for the limited English speakers. Each procedure contains step-by-step directions for the teacher to combine with current methods of the teaching of reading.

The author reviews the key problems associated with generally accepted practices for identifying, and providing programs, for the gifted Native American student. Culturally appropriate behavior of the Native American gifted is discussed and an outline for securing tribal input to the development of an identification process is suggested. The importance of using culture based definitions of giftedness and goals in the education of students so identified is stressed. Program options and models are presented which address the central issue of self-concept.

The purpose of this study was to objectively describe a method of teaching English communication skills to Spanish-speaking Mexican-migrant adults. A program of experiences was developed to teach communication skills to Mexican-migrant adults. An attempt was made to overcome the difficulties these adults face in learning a second language and to bring about the changes in attitude necessary for ready adaptation to the culture in which they now find themselves. The important factor in teaching communication skills is the building of an adequate English vocabulary.

Before a Thai teacher attempts to teach English spelling to her students, she should consider the factors that complicate English spelling for the Thai student, so that she can provide effective lessons, methods of instruction, and teaching materials. The purpose of the study was to determine by questionnaire the attitudes of college freshmen and sophomores toward marriage to another of different religion, race, and/or cultural background, and to determine whether the findings compare with the findings of previous studies. Results of previous studies indicate that today's students are more willing to marry persons of different faith, race, and/or cultural background. Jacks' study (to be described later) in particular shows students more accepting of interfaith marriages.
