A Co-Matching Model For Multi-Choice Reading Comprehension, Shuohang Wang, Mo Yu, Shiyu Chang, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Multi-choice reading comprehension is a challenging task, which involves the matching between a passage and a question-answer pair. This paper proposes a new co-matching approach to this problem, which jointly models whether a passage can match both a question and a candidate answer. Experimental results on the RACE dataset demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Contemporary Philosophical Proposals For The University: Toward A Philosophy Of Higher Education By Aaron Stoller & Eli Kramer, Editors, Laura E. Smithers
Contemporary Philosophical Proposals For The University: Toward A Philosophy Of Higher Education By Aaron Stoller & Eli Kramer, Editors, Laura E. Smithers
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
Aaron Stoller and Eli Kramer’s (2018) edited volume Contemporary Philosophical Proposals for the University: Toward a Philosophy of Higher Education is a thought provoking addition to the literature between philosophy and higher education. The editors argue for the possibilities of philosophical thinking, particularly a reconstructive philosophy as read through the work of John Dewey, to ameliorate the problems of our neoliberal times. The contributed chapters extend this work to particular sites in higher education as well as through additional philosophers and philosophical schools of thought. This volume will be of interest to philosophers engaged with problems of higher education, university …

El Cuento Como Recurso Didáctico En La Enseñanza Del Francés Lengua Extranjera, Sonia R. Badenas
El Cuento Como Recurso Didáctico En La Enseñanza Del Francés Lengua Extranjera, Sonia R. Badenas
Faculty Publications

Reflections On Incorporating Virtues In An Intercultural Communication For Teachers Course, Michael Lessard-Clouston
Reflections On Incorporating Virtues In An Intercultural Communication For Teachers Course, Michael Lessard-Clouston
International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching
Christians teaching English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) address cultural issues to improve students’ intercultural communication. In reflecting on my experience delivering a teacher training course, this article describes strategies for incorporating seven virtues in an Intercultural Communication for Teachers class. It first outlines foundational background and then offers examples of ways students in the course may go deeper with Christian virtues in their reflection and in their ESL/EFL teaching. It also introduces Scriptures and relevant resources that may be useful to professors involved in teacher training and to teachers who wish to incorporate virtues into ESL/EFL classes.

Digital Literary Studies In The High School Environment, Eric Rettberg
Digital Literary Studies In The High School Environment, Eric Rettberg
Faculty Publications & Research
In my time today, I’ll discuss some of the challenges and opportunities of adapting a college-level digital-centric course for the high-school classroom. The two courses in question are a class called Literature in the Digital Era, which I taught as a postdoc at the University of Virginia in 2014, and a class called Digital Literary Studies, which I’ll teach at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, a state-run boarding school for high schoolers talented in math and science, in Spring 2019. While there’s been a lot of continuity in the design of the two classes, teaching high school does present …

Finding aid, scan and typescript (Click on "Additional Files" below) for Manuscripts Small Collection 3232. Letter, 10 January 1845, of teacher Franklin W. Capwell to his parents in Wyoming County, New York. Writing from Mortonsville, Kentucky, he describes the circumstances of his decision to teach at a seminary there, listing his subjects and fees. He finds Southern women unsuitable for their lack of education, but declares that their wealth makes them good marriage prospects for other Northern men. He also comments on the reliance on slaves for ordinary labor, the defense of slavery by ministers, and the fear of slave …

The Roles We Played: Exploring Intimacy In Research, Kathleen M. Alley
The Roles We Played: Exploring Intimacy In Research, Kathleen M. Alley
The Qualitative Report
Intimate relationships can serve as catalysts impelling us to deeply interact with others, and, consequently helping us to develop a greater understanding of ourselves, those with whom we come into contact, and the wider world. This manuscript describes the challenges and constraints I faced when engaged in qualitative research with an intimate other. I borrow from Dr. Carolyn Ellis’ (2007) concept of relational ethics, which requires researchers to: (a) act from their hearts and minds, (b) acknowledge interpersonal bonds to others, and (c) take responsibility for actions and their consequences. Power is a part of intimate relationships, so exploring and …

Inter-Institutional Agreement For Care And Use Of Vertebrate Animals, Office Of Research Compliance, University Of Maine
General University of Maine Publications
Collaborations among institutions can bring greater expertise and resources to address vertebrate research, teaching or outreach objectives. However, such collaborations can result in uncertainty about which individuals and institutions are responsible for oversight and activities pertaining to the humane care, use and final disposition of vertebrate study subjects. Inter-institutional Agreements are intended to assure that collaborative activities using vertebrate animals receive appropriate Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) review, that all parties involved are aware of their respective roles in providing for humane care and use of study subjects, and that a communication system is in place to meet …
