Schooling Silence: Sexual Harassment And Its Presence And Perception At Uganda’S Universities And Secondary Schools, Elena Mieszczanski Oct 2018

Schooling Silence: Sexual Harassment And Its Presence And Perception At Uganda’S Universities And Secondary Schools, Elena Mieszczanski

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Although reports indicate that a majority of students in Uganda are sexually abused while in school, sexual harassment and its impact on educational attainment is a rampant yet understudied problem (The Uganda National Strategic Plan on Violence Against Children in Schools, 2015). While harassment in schools by teachers and students is not the only factor leading to high dropout rates among students, the behavior of teachers and students in school, and the lack of discipline towards their actions is an internal contribution to this effect. This study aims to better understand the perceptions on what constitutes “sexual harassment” in Uganda …

“Higher” School: Nineteenth-Century High Schools And The Secondary-College Divide, Amy J. Lueck Oct 2018

“Higher” School: Nineteenth-Century High Schools And The Secondary-College Divide, Amy J. Lueck

English

This article traces the emergence of nineteenth-century U.S. high schools in the landscape of higher education, attending to the gendered, raced, and classed distinctions at play in this development. Exploring differences in the conceptualization and status of high schools in Louisville, Kentucky, for white male, white female, and mixed-gender African American students, this article reminds us of how these institutional types have been situated, socially inflected, and structured in relation to broader political and power structures that transcend explicit pedagogical considerations. As a result, I argue for the recognition of high schools as historically significant sites in the history of …

A Tradition Of Bells: Glatfelter Bell And Hall, Shannon R. Zeltmann Oct 2018

A Tradition Of Bells: Glatfelter Bell And Hall, Shannon R. Zeltmann

Student Publications

Every hour, students and staff hear the tolling of a bell. Some students hear it and count the number of times it rings to see what time it is. Others hear it and realize they are late to class. And many come back after they have graduated and are happy to hear the bell toll once more. There are many times when the bell is rung today. The bell is rung at graduation, funerals in the Chapel, and alumni and donor recognition. The Glatfelter Bell has been part of the Gettysburg experience since 1892. This bell is housed in one …

Bibles, Ballots, And Bills: Political Resistance To Parochial Education In 1870s Ohio, James Gutowski Oct 2018

Bibles, Ballots, And Bills: Political Resistance To Parochial Education In 1870s Ohio, James Gutowski

2018 Faculty Bibliography

The post-Civil War era opened a new chapter in the development of Catholic education in the United States. Seeking ways to forge stronger bonds of national unity, the Republican Party placed a high priority on public education as a means of forging a common American culture. Subsequently, members of the party viewed the growing number of Catholic schools, which offered an alternative to the public system, as a threat. The disproportionate growth of the Catholic population in Ohio alarmed the Republican Party, then holding many local and statewide offices. These officials sought to create legal and legislative barriers to hinder …

The Complexity Of Language And Learning: Deconstructing Teachers' Conceptions Of Academic Language, Amy J. Heineke, Sabina Rak Neugebauer Oct 2018

The Complexity Of Language And Learning: Deconstructing Teachers' Conceptions Of Academic Language, Amy J. Heineke, Sabina Rak Neugebauer

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

“Academic language” is a term that is thrown around frequently in educational circles, particularly in recent years. Whether in pre-service teacher education with candidates and cooperating teachers preparing for the widely required Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA; Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity, 2016), or in-service teachers grappling with the implementation of the Common Core Standards (National Governors Association, 2010), academic language has become de rigueur a jargon term required for a number of current classroom, school, and university initiatives. But what is academic language?

Wilderness, Kendra Smalley Oct 2018

Wilderness, Kendra Smalley

English Senior Capstone

Wilderness is composed of one nonfiction piece and a collection of poems that use images of the wild, such as forests and the wind, to explore the interactions between humanity and nature. Within the poems is a progression from attempt at mastery over the natural world to humility in response to the untamable to acceptance of the wild places in life, including within one’s own self. Inspired by experiences grounded in the Midwest, these works celebrate nature while also revealing the tension between its simultaneous beauty and danger.

Mind Control In The Post-Colonial State: The Impact Of Foreign Direct Investment In Tertiary Education In Senegal And Jamaica, Janiel Chantae Slowly Oct 2018

Mind Control In The Post-Colonial State: The Impact Of Foreign Direct Investment In Tertiary Education In Senegal And Jamaica, Janiel Chantae Slowly

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since the end of 17th to 20th century colonization, Senegal and Jamaica have been victims of the rhetoric of development. The economic, social, and political progress of these nations have always been overshadowed by their categorization as “developing countries”. Yet, this development rhetoric fails to acknowledge not only the wounds of colonization but the more modern manifestations of continued exploitation of these countries often by the same countries that “emancipated” their colonies. Senegal and Jamaica for example, are both dominated by large percentages of young adults, in both cases a large majority of the populations are individuals under the age …

Hometrees And Roleplaying: How Instability Affects "The Catcher In The Rye's" Holden And "The Flick's" Avery In Their Pursuit Of Belonging, Caleb Hoelscher Oct 2018

Hometrees And Roleplaying: How Instability Affects "The Catcher In The Rye's" Holden And "The Flick's" Avery In Their Pursuit Of Belonging, Caleb Hoelscher

English Senior Capstone

Avery, a socially anxious movie buff working on a theater cleanup crew, and Holden, a prep-school flunkout wandering the city of New York, are both emerging adults seeking a place to belong. They desire to connect with others based on shared commitment to a center of meaning. However, the instability and fakeness of their worlds and the people who inhabit them frustrate their pursuit, leading Holden and Avery to demonstrate similar patterns of behavior that further isolate them and diminish their sense of self. In addition, despite Holden’s disgust with movies, particularly ones he deems “phony,” both Holden and Avery …

Anthropology Department Annual Newsletter, Department Of Anthropology Oct 2018

Anthropology Department Annual Newsletter, Department Of Anthropology

General University of Maine Publications

Anthropology is the study of humans. Anthropologists study the entire spectrum of human existence from 6.5 million years ago when the first hominid set foot on the African continent, the process of human evolution, domestication of plants and animals, development of civilization, migration to the ends of the earth, and the present day diversity of cultures, religions, economies, and kinship systems seen around the world. Anthropology provides a well-rounded, generalist education that enhances wide career choices and provides students with the ability to critically evaluate theories, options, and actions that affect humankind.
