A career Maine educator has been named to provide leadership and coordination for a regional collaboration working to improve teaching and learning at all levels. Owen P. Maurais, who recently retired as superintendent of Old Town Schools, will provide leadership and coordination for the Penobscot River Educational Partnership: A Professional Development Network, consisting of eight area school districts, a regional vocational/technical center and the University of Maine.

Initiative Links Sports, Standards, Stronger Schools, Kay Hyatt

A federal allocation will provide seed money for the University of Maine to shape a coaching and sports education initiative aligned with timely educational issues and the state's learning standards. Former Maine Education Commissioner J. Duke Albanese is spearheading the effort to create research-based curriculum development and community awareness to improve the training of coaches, and identify and implement best practices for school sports programs.

To say the 2001-02 University of Maine ice hockey season was one of ups-and-downs will not do it justice. After losing legendary head coach Shawn Walsh to cancer less than 24 hours before the first scheduled practice, the Black Bears rebounded to come within 53 seconds of winning it's third national championship. However, the National Championship was not to be as Minnesota won the game in overtime. The season was capped off when 2001-02 interim head coach Tim Whitehead was named head coach on April 8, and then two weeks later was named the winner of the Spencer Penrose Award, …

A new sports coaching course offers college and non-degree students and interscholastic and community coaches in southern Maine the opportunity to add coaching credentials to their resumes. The one-credit Coaching Fundamentals meets the minimal course requirements for interscholastic coaching eligibility at the middle school and high school levels in Maine and most other states.

Teaching Economics In United States History: One Teacher Shares Some Lessons, Kathleen S. Bullock
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
This paper addresses the value and benefits of teaching economics in U.S. History at the high school level. Some of the challenges it presents such as curriculum style, teacher qualifications, assessment and accountability, pacing, and developing thinking skills for a theory-based course are discussed. I also offer activities with accompanying worksheets and graphic organizers that may assist teachers in meeting these challenges. The activities include tariffs, a run on the bank, monopolies, and recessions as an introduction to basic economic principles that are important in teaching U.S. History.
