Brochure For Ruth E. Engle Memorial Collection Of Children's Book Illustration, Murray Library
Friends of Murray Library
The Ruth E. Engle Memorial Collection of Children's Book Illustration celebrates the art we first met as children and recalls our enchantment with the magical pairing of story and picture. Libraries have traditionally collected and displayed art and illustration, particularly the latter because of its affinity to literature. With this expanding collection of original artworks created by award-winning illustrators from around the world, Murray Library embraces that tradition. In addition to supporting the education and art curriculum, the Engle Memorial Collection inspires student and faculty research and is an ideal destination for field trips by students from area schools.
The Power Of Music: Song Serves As An Effective Recall Cue In Children, Tanisha Dews
The Power Of Music: Song Serves As An Effective Recall Cue In Children, Tanisha Dews
McCabe Thesis Collection
Song, in some cases, can facilitate learning and recall. The experiments in this thesis demonstrate that information is better recalled when it is heard as a song rather than as speech or through lecture. This study further proves that when a combination of song and speech are taught to children, the retrieval of information is even greater. When the group of the second condition was tested, they were more successful in recalling the information learned. This study also recognizes that song can infuse difficulty due to music's rich structure and makeup of rhythm, tempo, and stress patterns. The overall paper …
Hyphenated Identities As A Challenge To Nation-State School Practice?, Edmund T. Hamann, William England
Hyphenated Identities As A Challenge To Nation-State School Practice?, Edmund T. Hamann, William England
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This chapter concludes the edited volume Hyphenated Identities and affords a chance to juxtapose how transnational students negotiate school and identity with how school systems in turn view such students, and then it allows the examination of two different strategies -- situational ethnicity versus the assertion of hyphenated identity -- as a glimpse into the cosmology of transnationally mobile students as they come into adulthood.
Schooling, National Affinity(Ies), And Transnational Students In Mexico, Edmund T. Hamann, Víctor Zúñiga
Schooling, National Affinity(Ies), And Transnational Students In Mexico, Edmund T. Hamann, Víctor Zúñiga
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
An examination of responses by 346 students from Nuevo León and Zacatecas, Mexico, who had previously attended schools in the United States, found that 37% asserted a hyphenated identity as "Mexican-American," while an additional 5% identified as "American." Put another way, 42% did not identify singularly as "Mexican." Those who insisted on a hyphenated identity were not a random segment of the larger sample, but rather had distinct profiles in terms of gender, time in the United States, and more. This chapter describes these students, broaches implications of their hyphenated identities for their schooling, and considers how this example may …

Classroom Music Continuum For The Vallecito Union School District, Kindergarten Through Sixth Grade, Deborah Glow Martin
Classroom Music Continuum For The Vallecito Union School District, Kindergarten Through Sixth Grade, Deborah Glow Martin
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It is generally recognized and accepted that music is a vital part of a child's education. The Music Educators National Conference stated in "The Child's Bill of Rights in Music":
Every child has the right to full and free opportunity to explore and develop his capacities in the field of music in such ways as may bring him happiness and a sense of well-being.
It is impossible to deal with all aspects of elementary music education in a single presentation; consequently, this thesis is directed toward a specific need in a particular school district, namely the Vallecito Union School District. …

The purpose of the study was to compare the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) in an effort to establish an estimate of the similarity between the two measures. The sample included 194 nine, ten, and eleven year old children referred to the University’s Psychological Clinic. There were 100 males and 94 females with a mean age of 10 years and six months. Out of the 194 children, 106 were white, 46 black and 42 of unknown race. Pearson Product Moment Correlations were performed between the PPVT IQ and the WISC-R variables. As …
Death In Children's Literature, Joyce Ann Kaufman
Death In Children's Literature, Joyce Ann Kaufman
Honors Theses
Mr. Wordsworth posed an interesting question. What should a child know about death?
Often we try to protect children from death. Euphemisms are used regarding death. People and pets do not die, they "pass away," "go to sleep," or "go to live in heaven." When a death occurs in a family, the adults often say of a young child, "It doesn't seem to bother him. Maybe he doesn't realize what has happened." Other people may mention that "He has accepted it so well. Children adapt so easily."

An Analysis Of The Physical Education Programs Of The 165 California Secondary Schools, Collie Jean Kidwell
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
At the present time there are many books written on the field of physical education which have set standards of methods, techniques, and procedures used in the teaching of physical education. There will also be found in these books a set pattern of physical education activities which should be taught in our schools. Due to the change in trends, partly brought about by the last war, it will be found that there has been a modification of the methods, techniques and procedures now being used.
The problem of the study deals with the trends in boys' physical education programs to …

Elizabeth Harrison’s Writings
Twelfth Edition.
Preface
It is not expected that the stories in this book will be told in their present form to Kindergarten children, as experience has shown that each Kindergartner must modify her story to suit the needs and capacities of her children, and must learn to take from any story just so much as may be helpful to her in creating a fresh story for the occasion. It is hoped, however, that they may serve the mother in her home reading with her group of children, and also that my colaborers in primary and second grade schools may sometimes …
