We Could Shape It: Organizing For Asian Pacific American Student Empowerment, Peter Nien-Chu Kiang

With the doubling of the school-age population of Asian Pacific Americans during the 1990s, the unmet needs of Asian Pacific Americans are escalating dramatically in schools throughout the country. In most settings, teachers, counselors, and administrators do not share the ethnic, linguistic, and racial backgrounds of their Asian Pacific American students. Constrained by limited resources, an increasingly hostile, anti-immigrant climate, and their own stereotypical assumptions, educators have been unable to respond effectively to the full range of academic, social, and personal challenges that face growing numbers of Asian Pacific American students.

The 1996-97 season should be an interesting one for the Black Bears as they pursue a third consecutive conference championship and NCAA berth. In keeping with the UMaine tradition of academic excellence,the two previous teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament have combined for a 3.0 GPA or better. The Black Bears completed the best season in the program’s 21-year history with a 27-5 record last year. The team went undefeated, 18-0, in conference play, the second team to do so in NAC history.

Pilot Program Helping Schools Link Lessons Of Athletics And Academics, Kay Hyatt

Four Maine high schools are pilot sites for a new program designed to strengthen the relationship between athletics and academics and formally connect the contributions of sports to the educational improvement goals of each school. The foe us of the project is professional development of coaches to ensure that the lessons and experiences of athletics support the local school mission and the state's performance-based expectations for students.

In The Story World, Kids Really Want To Read New Book Maps Out The Journey, Kay Hyatt

It's not that kids can't read, but that they won't because they can't "see" or "live through" the story. That insight from the perspective of seventh and eight graders led a determined teacher to find out just what the act of reading really is and to let his students in on the secret. In You Gotta Be the Book, recently released by Teachers' College Press and the National Council of Teachers of English, Jeffrey Wilhelm, now a University of Maine professor, weaves the drama and characters of his teacher research into new theory and practice that is described as "groundbreaking." …
