A Comparison Of Hybrid/Online And Lecture College Courses, Katelyn Paquin
Honors Projects
The purpose of this research is to investigate relationships between online college courses and in-person courses with regard to student course completion rate and course grade averages. The personality characteristics of Introversion, Conscientiousness and Academic Self-Regulation, and professor student rapport were also examined in relation to performance of the students enrolled in online and in-person classes. This study was based on an integrative theory of self- and social regulation in learning contexts. A two-tailed t-test for independent samples found no significant difference between the end of previous semester cumulative GPAs (CGPAs) of students in the online/hybrid or in-person courses. The …

The Green Growth Knowledge Economy: Implications For Technology And Design Teachers, Kurt W. Seemann, Jason Newcombe, Angela F. Turner
Kurt W Seemann
How societies learn, design and develop a green growth focus in knowledge innovations are the keys to sustainable economic and social development. The unique characteristics of knowledge and the dynamics of the knowledge economy mean that, whether we like it or not, a cultural change is required from thinking in terms of production to thinking in terms of innovation. Inevitably, the teaching and learning of green knowledge innovations is a key factor for determining how well societies will sustain a quality life in the emerging resource constraints that populations face. This chapter outlines key ideas underpinning the nature of a …

Teaching Computer Skills To Senior Citizens: A Library Assistant’S Learning Experience, Ngaire I R Smith
Teaching Computer Skills To Senior Citizens: A Library Assistant’S Learning Experience, Ngaire I R Smith
Georgia Library Quarterly
This paper describes the challenges of teaching senior citizens in their 70s and 80s elementary Web and computer skills at the University of Georgia’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Simple tasks such as clicking on links and understanding the difference between the address bar and a search box confused class members and the instructor attempted to address this age divide by developing activities that would make using the Web easier and more fun.

Animation Overrides, Prims And Student Teaching: Managing And Collaborating With Undergraduate Teacher Candidates In Multi-User Virtual Environments, Randall S. Dunn
Animation Overrides, Prims And Student Teaching: Managing And Collaborating With Undergraduate Teacher Candidates In Multi-User Virtual Environments, Randall S. Dunn
Dr. Randall S. Dunn
The mid-two thousands hinged the future of education on the use of multi-user virtual environments. The frenzy over this clumsy but multimedia rich environment ran viral. Assumptions about the nature of the “traditional” college student (late teens to earl twenties) fed into the thought that we merely had to virtually build it for the students to come (and be engaged, motivated, and potentially learn). Now, we see the rise of mobile technologies, augmented reality and collaborative online social networks as replacements for this “old technology.” Where does that leave these virtual playgrounds for the socialites and potentially the learners?

Academic Libraries Supporting The Research Needs Of Student Veterans: A Bibliography, Rebecca Arzola
Publications and Research
The number of Student Veterans entering higher education is growing especially after the passing of the new Post-9/11 GI Bill in 2008. Veterans are using their educational benefits and transitioning from a military to civilian environment. In order to meet the needs of student veterans, administrators, faculty and staff are trying to make available support services for veterans. There is a range of services that can be provided and the library is one that can provide both a physical and virtual environment to support veterans. Although not always mentioned in articles on student veteran transition, it is important that libraries …
Caregiver Training: Increasing Generalization Of Parenting Skills Through Teaching Caregivers To Recognize Child Behavior, Mary Rachel Sawyer
Caregiver Training: Increasing Generalization Of Parenting Skills Through Teaching Caregivers To Recognize Child Behavior, Mary Rachel Sawyer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has demonstrated the efficacy of a behavioral parent training program for increasing the accuracy of trained skills; however, few studies have examined the extent to which those skills generalize to the natural environment (i.e., the home) and are used with the target individual (i.e., the child). In addition, little is known about the direct effect that caregiver implementation of the skills has on child behavior. A multiple baseline across participants design was used to (a) assess caregiver accuracy with implementation of three parenting skills, and (b) assess subsequent effects of the parenting skills on child behavior. Results demonstrated …

Changes In Attitudes And Behaviors Toward Physical Activity, Nutrition, And Social Support For Middle School Students Using The Afit App As A Suppliment To Instruction In A Physical Education Class, Thomas Andrew Watterson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Finding ways to improve nutritional and physical activity components with today's adolescents is a significant problem. The obesity epidemic is over 10 years old and little research has been done on successful interventions that motivate today's students using the latest technology. A total of 140 middle school students and four physical education teachers participated in a 4-week study using a newly created application (AFIT app) for supplemental teaching in and out of the classroom. Combining a theoretical framework of Self-Determination and motivating strategies implored in today's mobile technology, significance was found using the PACE (2001) instrument in fruits and …

Vocational Education And Training In Australia : Facing The Challenges Of Core Skills In Australia, Dave Tout
David (Dave) Tout
The Australian vocational education and training (VET) sector is responsible for education and training for work. It has a well-established national system of endorsed and accredited training and curriculum through training packages. There is a national qualifications framework which applies across the different tertiary sectors (higher and VET) through the Australian Qualifications Framework, and qualifications are transportable across states and sectors. There is industry input and co-ordination to training/training packages through industry skills councils. The qualifications undergo regular reviews and there are nationally agreed standards for training organisations. There are a variety of providers, called Registered Training Organisations (RTOs); these …

Employing Critical Reflection In An Online Emergency Services Course, R Maxfield, John Fisher
Dr. John R. Fisher
Non-traditional students in an online course in Homeland Security used the DEAL model of critical reflection to describe (a) what they learned, (b) how they learned it, (c)why it matters, and (d) what they will do with what they learned. Online discussion of readings proved to be the most effective learning technique used in the course because it incorporated reflective practices and allowed application of real-life experiences.
The Need For Fire Service Professional Development, R. Jeffery Maxfield, John R. Fisher
The Need For Fire Service Professional Development, R. Jeffery Maxfield, John R. Fisher
Dr. John R. Fisher
The importance of fire and emergency services professional development standards has never been more apparent than during the last few years. With the events of September 11, 2001, the need for improved leadership in the emergency services has become evident. The International Association of Fire Chiefs has introduced a professional development standards model, based on a definition of professional development, which is “the planned, progressive life-long process of education, training, self-development, and experience” (IAFC, 2003). Their standard recognizes that emergency response training activities are more prevalent in the early stages of a career and that organizational skills grow with a …
