The concept of circular economies drives optimal resource efficiency. This means that resources should be fully utilised throughout the product’s lifecycle. To achieve this, businesses have to plan through the entire product life cycle, beginning from design to end-of-life. Designing products for a circular economy is not as simple as it sounds. The move will require take-back schemes and products designed for easy upgrade or reuse. Businesses typically focus on the manufacturing, packaging, marketing and point of sale of a product. Now they must rethink how to ensure their products will not eventually end up in a landfill or an …
Designing And Evaluating Business Process Models: An Experimental Approach, Yuecheng Martin Yu, Alexander Pelaez, Karl R. Lang
Designing And Evaluating Business Process Models: An Experimental Approach, Yuecheng Martin Yu, Alexander Pelaez, Karl R. Lang

This paper presents an experimental approach to compare the performance of alternative business process designs. We use an example case of an electronic group buying setting to demonstrate how our approach can be applied in practice. More specifically, we chose a standard business process, the sales process as implemented on a group buying platform, to illustrate how a business process may be redesigned in order to better meet the needs of customers. For that purpose, we introduce a social technology feature to support cooperation among buyers in the sales process and then analyze the performance impact of the proposed business …

In the current retail segment, the retail store owners are keen to understand the browsing behavior and purchase pattern of the shoppers inside the physical stores. Profiling the behavior of the shopper is key to success for any marketing strategies that can optimize or personalize shopping-related services in real-time. We envision that exploiting the knowledge of real-time behavior of shopper’s in-store activities enables novel applications such as: (a) targeted advertising or recommendations: based on longer term shopper profiles, (b) proactive retail help to assist the shoppers who are confused in choosing between two items, (c) smart reminders that can remind …

Fusing Wifi And Video Sensing For Accurate Group Detection In Indoor Spaces, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Zaman Lantra, Archan Misra

Understanding one's group context in indoor spaces is useful for many reasons - e.g., at a shopping mall, knowing a customer's group context can help in offering context-specific incentives, or estimating taxi demand for customers exiting the mall. Group detection and monitoring using WiFi-based indoor location traces fails when users are invisible (either because they don't carry smartphones, or because their WiFi is turned OFF) or when location tracking is inaccurate. In this paper, we propose a multi-modal group detection system that fuses two independent modes: video and WiFi, for detecting groups with low latency and high accuracy. We present …
How Android App Developers Manage Power Consumption? An Empirical Study By Mining Power Management Commits, Lingfeng Bao, David Lo, Xin Xia, Xinyu Wang, Cong Tian
How Android App Developers Manage Power Consumption? An Empirical Study By Mining Power Management Commits, Lingfeng Bao, David Lo, Xin Xia, Xinyu Wang, Cong Tian

As Android platform becomes more and more popular, a large amount of Android applications have been developed. When developers design and implement Android applications, power consumption management is an important factor to consider since it affects the usability of the applications. Thus, it is important to help developers adopt proper strategies to manage power consumption. Interestingly, today, there is a large number of Android application repositories made publicly available in sites such as GitHub. These repositories can be mined to help crystalize common power management activities that developers do. These in turn can be used to help other developers to …

Nowadays, the popular Android is so closely involved in people's daily lives that people rely on Android to perform critical operations and trust Android with sensitive information. It is of great importance to guarantee the usability and security of Android which, however, is such a huge system that a potential threat may arise from any part of it. In this paper, we focus on the Free Floating window (FF window) which is a category of windows that can appear freely above any other applications. It can share the screen space with other FF windows, dialogs, and activities. An FF window …
Knowledge Cluster Development Through Connectivity: Examples From Southeast Asia, Hans-Dieter Evers, Thomas Menkhoff
Knowledge Cluster Development Through Connectivity: Examples From Southeast Asia, Hans-Dieter Evers, Thomas Menkhoff
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Whereas since the 1990s national and regional planners saw the creation of knowledge clusters as a panacea for gaining a competitive advantage to propel a region or country into a higher stage of industrial development, recent research suggests that connectivity (e.g. through broadband penetration or joint research connections with collaborators elsewhere) is one of the enablers for socio-economic development. This paper will draw on the results of studies on knowledge clusters in Southeast Asian countries (Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore) as well as the relevant current literature to ask the question, whether knowledge clusters really contribute to regional development and if yes, …

Online Spatio-Temporal Matching In Stochastic And Dynamic Domains, Meghna Lowalekar, Pradeep Varakantham, Patrick Jaillet

Spatio-temporal matching of services to customers online is a problem that arises on a large scale in many domains associated with shared transportation (ex: taxis, ride sharing, super shuttles, etc.) and delivery services (ex: food, equipment, clothing, home fuel, etc.). A key characteristic of these problems is that matching of services to customers in one round has a direct impact on the matching of services to customers in the next round. For instance, in the case of taxis, in the second round taxis can only pick up customers closer to the drop off point of the customer from the first …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to identify the key characteristics and propose a working definition of a smart nation.Design/methodology/approach - A case study of Singapore through an analysis of the key speeches made by senior Singapore leaders, publicly available government documents and news reports since the launch of the smart nation initiative in December 2014 was carried out.Findings - Just like smart cities, the idea of a smart nation is an evolving concept. However, there are some emerging characteristics that define a smart nation.Research limitations/implications - The paper provides an initial understanding of the key characteristics and …
