The purpose of this study was to assess the results of a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I football team in terms of male student-athletes’ (N = 78) perceptions of identity development and the athletic career transition process in the context of student engagement research literature in higher education. Previous research with the Life After Sports Scale (LASS) (Harrison & Lawrence, 2002, 2003, 2004; Lawrence & Harrison, 2011), a 58-item mixed method inventory, has focused on the Division II male and female student-athlete experience. This Article provides a preview of the primary CBA deal terms that NBA owners and the NBPA are expected to focus on in the months leading up to the December 2016 opt-out deadline. Part I summarizes the current NBA business model and economic climate. It also explains how the league’s new media rights agreement, recent team profitability, and increased franchise values impact the probability of players and/or owners opting out of the current CBA. This paper proposes that the National Basketball Association (NBA) adopt a salary arbitration system in specifically defined circumstances—for restricted free agents who either last played under a four-year rookie salary scale contract, or last played under a two-year or three-year contract as a second-round draft pick or undrafted free agent. Part I of this paper summarizes the use of salary arbitration in professional sport leagues. Part II of this paper provides an overview of the current arbitration procedures in the NBA.
