Variations In Dropout Rates Across Virginia, Joshua K. Bowser
Variations In Dropout Rates Across Virginia, Joshua K. Bowser
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis, this study attempts to capture variation in dropout rates across Virginia counties and cities. With the respective dropout rates as the dependent variable, seven independent variables are used accordingly in order to provide as much explanatory power as possible. At the 10 percent significance level, four of seven variables are statistically significant with an adjusted R2 of .374. Important policy implications can be derived from the model and its statistically significant variables. The model finds that the percentage of blacks in the population, university access, the unemployment rate and single female-headed households to …

Housing Price Determinants In The Lynchburg, Virginia Area, Benjamin L. Ferguson
Housing Price Determinants In The Lynchburg, Virginia Area, Benjamin L. Ferguson
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
The effect of certain variables on the price of a house is a subject that has been very widely studied. This paper attempts to generate a pricing model for houses in the Lynchburg VA, area using the physical characteristics of a home and other locational variables. The model will attempt to create a representation of the housing price equation for the market in the area. The results of the equation will allow the ability to predict future housing prices in the market, given certain physical and locational values that are similar for the area. 3

An Experimental Examination Of The House Money Effect In A Multi-Period Setting, Lucy Ackert, Narat Charupat, Bryan K. Church, Richard Deaves
Faculty and Research Publications
There is evidence that risk-taking behavior is influenced by prior monetary gains and losses. When endowed with house money, people become more risk taking. This paper is the first to report a house money effect in a dynamic, financial setting. Using an experimental method, the authors compare market outcomes across sessions that differ in the level of cash endowment (low and high). Their experimental results provide strong support for a house money effect. Traders' bids, price predictions, and market prices are influenced by the amount of money that is provided prior to trading. However, dynamic behavior is difficult to interpret …

The Impact Of Enterprise Risk Management On The Internal Audit Function, Mark S. Beasley, Richard Clune, Dana Hermanson
Faculty and Research Publications
This exploratory study provides evidence about factors associated with the overall impact of enterprise risk management (ERM) on the internal audit function’s activities. Based on responses from 122 organizations in several countries, we find that ERM has the greatest impact on internal audit’s activities when (a) the organization’s ERM process is more completely in place, (b) the CFO and audit committee have called for greater internal audit activity related to ERM, (c) the chief audit executive’s (CAE) tenure is longer, (d) the organization is in the banking industry or is an educational institution, and (e) the internal audit function has …

The Class B Dealer: Down And Out?, Bernard Unti
Laboratory Experiments Collection
The supply of dogs and cats to laboratories by Class B animal dealers has been a contentious matter for decades. The subject engenders heated debate whenever it surfaces, most recently in September 2005 when Senator Daniel Akaka (D-HI) proposed an amendment to the FY 2006 agriculture funding bill to withhold federal monies to research institutions that purchase animals from Class B dealers.

Dylemat Wartości Przedsiębiorstwa - Metoda Kcetm, Anna Ujwary-Gil
Anna Ujwary-Gil

Z wykorzystaniem metody VAIC™ analizie poddano kapitał fizyczny i strukturalny dwóch polskich spółek telekomunikacyjnych: Telekomunikacja Polska S.A. oraz Netia S.A. w perspektywie osiągnięć przedsiębiorstw podobnego sektora w Europie.

Project Management Issues In It Offshore Outsourcing, Kathy Schwaig, Stephen Gillam, Elke M. Leeds
Faculty and Research Publications
Global partnerships are forming to take advantage of the cost savings associated with offshoring as well as other strategic benefits. Not all information technology offshoring projects, however, are successful. Cost overruns, increased complexity and defective code cause organizations to rethink their offshoring strategy and their methods for managing these projects. In this paper, project management issues associated with offshore information technology outsourcing projects are identified and specific recommendations for addressing these issues are presented.

The Tuna Court: Law And Norms In The World's Premier Fish Market, Eric Feldman
All Faculty Scholarship
Legal scholars have long emphasized the corrosive impact of conflict on long-term commercial and interpersonal relationships. To minimize the negative consequences of such conflict, members of close-knit groups who anticipate future interactions create ways of resolving their disputes with reference to internal group norms rather than relying on state-mandated legal rules. From farmers in California’s Shasta County to jewelers in midtown Manhattan and neighbors in Sanders County, the literature describes people who create norms of conflict management that are faster and less expensive than relying on formal law, and lessen the harm that conflict causes to their relationships. This article …
