Understanding What Motivates Donor To Give: Applying New Strategies For Cultivating Relationships With Donors, Natalie J. Fischer
MPA Capstone Projects 2006 - 2015
In 2011, ACCORD, A Center for Dispute Resolution, Inc. lost 54% of its funding which caused major organizational changes, making it difficult to implement better donor development strategies. In the 2011-2012 fiscal year, donations from individuals made up only 1% of ACCORD's revenue.

Here’s a well-kept secret: The regional GRTC Transit System is among the most progressive organizations in Richmond. The nonprofit plays a major role in reducing pollution, easing traffic congestion and connecting people to jobs. Its reform-minded leadership is eager to play a larger role. Its unionized bus drivers, which included some of the first waves of black and female drivers, help hold it all together.
And those drivers love their jobs — to a degree unusual for workers in any profession. That’s what I learned through interviews with 16 current and former drivers this summer for an exhibition at the …

Education Par Excellence: Developing Personal Competencies And Character Through Philanthropy-Based Education, Shirine L. Mafi, Marsha Huber
Business, Accounting and Economics Faculty Scholarship
This teaching note presents an innovation in accounting education called the Philanthropy Project. The Philanthropy Project emphasizes experiential learning and is designed to promote the learning of discipline-specific concepts while simultaneously addressing the social needs of the surrounding community. In the Philanthropy Project, students receive money to distribute to not-for-profit organizations (NFPs) based on a competitive proposal process they help to develop and administer. A distinguishing characteristic of this project is that it is not a simulation. Students make real decisions that have immediate consequences to certain groups of people in their own communities. They have to make …

Should Religious Organizations Worry About Irs Audits?, Sarah J. Webber, Janet S. Greenlee

A great deal of media attention has focused on recent perceived financial abuses of churches and religious organizations. Cases of fraud within religious organizations have fueled the public perception that churches require some form of monitoring to prevent financial abuse. However, the IRS has limited authority to audit religious organizations under section 7611, and the results of such audits are generally unavailable to the public.
Through a Freedom of Information Act request, we obtained the outcomes of all section 7611 IRS audits of religious organizations conducted between 2001 and 2010. We found that although the number of both churches and …

Nebraska Department Of Agriculture Beginning Farmer Program & Farm Mediation Program, Alphadog Inc., Ashley Schlake, Michelle Pineda, Emily Younger, Gabriel Sanchez, Margaret Weber, Erica Graves, Kylie Friedrich
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Student Advertising Projects
With approximately 46,800 farms covering 92% of the land, Nebraska is one of the nation’s key agricultural states (NDA, February 2013). The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) created programs, such as the Beginning Farmer Program and the Farm Mediation Program, to assist with the farming and ranching process. Recently, there has been a decrease in program participants. With appropriate advertising and public relations, we will increase the number of applications for the Beginning Farmer Program and the number of clinic participants for the Farm Mediation Program.
Through primary research, we determined the target market includes current and upcoming Nebraska farmers …

The Numbers Behind Celebrating More Birthdays: An Analysis Of The American Cancer Society’S Relay For Life, Eva Mahan
Honors Projects in Management
Despite all of the medical technological advances society has experienced, and is still experiencing, there has not been an ultimate cure for cancer found. Non-profit organizations like the American Cancer Society have been working for 100 years to raise funding and awareness for this issue and although great progress has been made since their founding in 1913, there is still more work that needs to be done to make cancer a disease of the past. This study first focuses on the structure of non-profit organizations, their role in society, and the techniques and procedures they follow when looking for donors. …
Initial Public Offerings In The Microfinance Industry: Does A Mission Drift Occur?, Sarah Segill
Initial Public Offerings In The Microfinance Industry: Does A Mission Drift Occur?, Sarah Segill
Honors Projects in Finance
This thesis analyzes whether or not there is a mission drift when microfinance organizations become publicly traded entities. One of the most debated criticisms of microfinance institutions (MFIs) today involves becoming for-profit organizations in attempt to raise more capital. Donor funding is limited for non-profit organizations and does not give an MFI much room to grow to serve a maximal number of people. The entry of for-profit microfinance institutions has a great deal of possibility in terms of generating scale, efficiency and innovation. Yet these for-profit institutions can easily lose track of their social mission to serve the poor and …
Added Complexity Of Social Entrepreneurship: A Knowledge-Based Approach, Ugur Uygur, Alexei M. Marcoux
Added Complexity Of Social Entrepreneurship: A Knowledge-Based Approach, Ugur Uygur, Alexei M. Marcoux
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Social entrepreneurship evades easy definition and conceptualization. In this paper we attempt to advance social entrepreneurship theoretically by examining it conceptually, from a theory of the firm perspective. If social entrepreneurship entails pursuit of a double bottom line (Dees 1998), the added complexity of the social entrepreneurial venture identified by Tracey and Phillips (2007) should be discoverable from a theory of the firm perspective. Applying the knowledge-based theory of the firm to social entrepreneurship, we aver that social entrepreneurship’s added complexity is manifest when social entrepreneurs make decisions about their knowledge. In contrast to ordinary entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs have to …

Your Prized Executive Is Leaving. Now What?, John R. Ledgerwood, Stephen N. Morgan

The departure of a key member of your organization can quickly throw things into turmoil if the person is tightly tied to the firm in the minds of investors. For these reasons and others, nonprofits and for-profits alike should have an established succession plan for identifying a worthy replacement. This article examines how one global nonprofit is planning proactively for the future.

Corporate Evolution: From Ngos And Social Enterprises To ‘Good Companies’, Singapore Management University
Perspectives@SMU
Frequently seen as an alternative to the realities of hardcore corporate life, social entrepreneurship and its emphasis on giving back to society after a life of abundance, may well become a thing of the past, along with Non Government Organisations (NGOs), which often act as watchdogs of corporate and government policy and practice. Both will likely transition into and underpin new ‘good companies’. At least that’s the view of leading Singapore social entrepreneur, Jack Sim, the founder of the World Toilet Organisation (WTO).
Retention Of Volunteers In A Non-Profit Organization: Sustaining Motivation And Work Satisfaction Of Direct Service Volunteers At Accord, A Center For Dispute Resolution Inc., Olga Tyurina
MPA Capstone Projects 2006 - 2015
Direct Service volunteers are a critical component to ACCORD's service delivery and mission accomplishment. Therefore, ACCORD is committed to maintaining its cadre of direct service volunteers. However, in 2012, ACCORD noticed a drop in the number of its direct service volunteers. The current Executive Director of ACCORD linked this drop wit h the budget cut the agency experienced in May 2011, which resulted in ACCORD's inability to provide as much support and to offer tangible rewards to its direct service volunteers as frequently as it used to.

This Guide, number 2 in the series, has been designed as a user friendly tool that could be used by different groups within education and philanthropy to suit their needs (e.g. in the training of philanthropic program managers in education; in the development of educational projects in schools; or supporting school-philanthropic-not-for-profit collaborations). Included are two ‘think pieces’ around collaboration: one on socially intelligent schools by Bill Lucas; the other on philanthropy and Indigenous education by Tony Dreise. These are followed by frameworks and guiding principles; and specific tools, tips and strategies for improving collaboration and engagement. Fifteen cases are also …

The Importance Of Information Integrity: In A Data-Driven World, Unreliable And Inaccurate Information Can Lead To Bad Decision-Making, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Madhavan K. Nayar
Accounting Faculty Publications
What is information integrity? It is the trustworthiness and dependability of information. The credibility of information depends on whether we are getting it from sources we can trust. After all, the value of information to the decision-maker and problem-solver consists first in its integrity, and then in its usefulness and usability. Why? Because, even the best chef knows that you can't make a good omelet out of bad eggs! Consider the emerging trend of big data (see" Big Data" on page 34). According to IBM, people create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data every day (a quintillion is 1 followed by …

Sustaining Online Communities In The Charitable Health Sector: How To Keep A Good Thing Going, Leesa N. Costello, Julie S. Dare, Lelia R. Green
Research outputs 2013
What happens when an online community part-funded by a competitive grant process in partnership with a relevant charitable organisation reaches its use-by date? What reasons might an organisation have for continuing (or not) to support the community and its future development? How is ‘ownership’ transferred from the research institution to the not-forprofit organisation, along with any possible risks? These are all good questions: not least because it seems that most communities in this position are not ‘adopted’ by their not-forprofit sponsors, but languish on the sidelines waiting for a benefactor to pick up the potential costs and risks. This paper …

Connecting With Volunteers: Memorable Messages And Volunteer Identification, Sarah Steimel
Connecting With Volunteers: Memorable Messages And Volunteer Identification, Sarah Steimel
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Many of the 1.8 million registered nonprofit organizations in the United States rely on the services of volunteers to be able to connect with and meaningfully serve their communities. However, volunteers are less likely to receive formal socialization and training than paid employees. Thus, this study employs the concept of memorable messages as a way for exploring the ways in which messages received by volunteers from a variety of organizational sources may affect their volunteer identification with the nonprofit organization they serve. Three results emerged from the data, including: (a) sources of memorable messages in volunteer organizations; (b) types of …

What We Talk About When We Talk About Tax Exemption, Philip Hackney
What We Talk About When We Talk About Tax Exemption, Philip Hackney
Articles
Under the Internal Revenue Code, certain nonprofit organizations are granted exemption from federal income tax (“tax-exemption”). Most tax-exemption rationales assume tax-exemption is a subsidy for organizations such as charities that provide some underprovided good or service. These theories assume there should be a tax on the income of nonprofit organizations but provide no justification for this assumption. This article contributes to the literature by examining the corporate income tax rationales as a proxy for why we might tax nonprofit organizations. The primary two theories hold that the corporate tax is imposed to: (1) tax shareholders (“shareholder theory”), and (2) regulate …

The Harvest Of Ministry: Exploring The Ministry Of Women Religious In Cleveland, Robert L. Fischer
Faculty Scholarship
Women religious serve in a range of ministries, often with the most disenfranchised in society. The nature of sisters' ministries has often been reduced to its external character – providing education, health care, or social services. What has been less understood is the enduring nature of the forces underlying these ministries. This study draws on six focus group conversations involving 33 Catholic sisters. The study surfaces key themes that frame a better understanding of the work of today's women religious. These themes can be adapted for others who seek to work with people in need.

Deer Herd Management Using The Internet: A Comparative Study Of California Targeted By Data Mining The Internet, G. Kent Webb
Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology
An ongoing project to investigate the use of the internet as an information source for decision support identified the decline of the California deer population as a significant issue. Using Google Alerts, an automated keyword search tool, text and numerical data were collected from a daily internet search and categorized by region and topic to allow for identification of information trends. This simple data mining approach determined that California is one of only four states that do not currently report total, finalized deer harvest (kill) data online and that it is the only state that has reduced the amount of …

Museums As Sites Of "Being In Conversation": A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Randy C. Roberts
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
In times of great change, institutions must be able to adapt while not losing their essence, those qualities that are central, enduring, and distinctive. While it is understood and acknowledged that museums must change their approach to be relevant and sustainable in a world in which there have been monumental shifts in the ways that people communicate, access information, and experience connection, the essential qualities of museums are not well-defined or agreed upon. More than a decade into the new century and in spite of much discussion, contemplation, and experimentation, the 21st century museum model remains unsettled. To explore the …
