As organizations struggle with how to develop and use their inherent expertise, the importance of knowledge management and collaboration has grown in both academic and practitioner communities. This paper outlines a new concept of collaborative knowledge management (CKM), which bridges the two fields. Drawing from literature, we present a conceptual framework for understanding the concepts underlying CKM. Next, this paper explores how a new technology, peer-to-peer (P2P), fits in the CKM paradigm. A discussion on P2P tools and a comparison of these tools with client server tools for enabling the CKM process is presented. P2P has great appeal for CKM …

Theoretical Model For Investigating The Impact Of Knowledge Portals On Different Levels Of Knowledge Processing, Saurabh Gupta, Robert Bostrom

Much of the research in the area of Knowledge Management (KM) has been at the individual level. However, KM literature argues for knowledge processing capacity at an organisational level to enhance organisational performance. This paper argues that there are additional levels of knowledge processing that need to be studied such as teams and communities of practice. The paper presents a theoretical model for investigating the impact of knowledge systems on different levels of and inter-level knowledge processing. Knowledge portals are used as an example of a KM system that facilitates knowledge flows. A framework for classification of portals is presented. …

The importance of knowledge management ( K M ) has been developed in both academic and practitioner literatures. Organizations are currently searching for best practices and technologies for implementing KM. Thispaper looks a t a new technology, Peer-to-Peer ( P 2 P ) computing, and explores how itfits in the knowledge management paradigm. The paper explores the kinds of P2P applications that exist, identifying those most relevant to KM. The paper then focuses on collaboration applications, comparing P2P tools with client server tools by mapping tool usefulness in t e r n of KMp r o c e s s …
