The spate of global scandals and corporate misadventures that began with the energy giant, Enron in the years 2000 to 2002, the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997/98, and the global Financial Meltdown of 2008, rocked the accountancy profession and sharply drew attention to the need for the profession to re-invent itself and re-define its focus in the new millennium. Accounting practitioners world-wide, have tested the limits of creative accounting, and the verdict of the marketplace is that the era of sharp and unwholesome practices are over for good. Part of the professional response to challenge of this era, is the …

This discussion highlights informed interaction between two knowledgeable parties about whether the residential mortgage asset backed securitization process involves the creation of an insurance product. Although an initial conclusion reached by an Insurance Examiner that it is not “insurance,” that same Examiner opened the door that it could be viewed as “insurance.” If it is determined that insurance is involved, the obligation to collect taxes falls onto the Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services, the requirement to collect balance sheets falls onto the Insurance Department, and the decision to prosecute originators for perpetuating a fraud on bank loan consumers falls …

This is the story of Chase1, the venerable old line bank, and how it used its dominant market influence in the decade leading up to 2012 to originate and acquire mortgage loans, how it forced individual homeowners to pay high rates, and how it ultimately began to steal the home equity away from hard-working homeowners and their families. It is also the story about how the largest US banks combined their anti-competitive behavior and took from residents in all States. As illustrated by the chain of events described below for a situation in Connecticut, Chase's attitude and actions never reflect …

Aspirations, Innovation, And Corporate Venture Capital: A Behavioral Perspective, Vibha Gaba, Shantanu Bhattacharya

This study takes an organizational decision-making perspective to examine when firms are likely to utilize CVC units as a mechanism for externalizing R&D. We draw insights from the behavioral theory of the firm to argue that managerial aspirations for innovation-related goals are an important driver of CVC initiatives within firms. We test our argument by examining both the adoption and termination of CVC units for a sample of information technology firms from 1992 to 2003. Results show that a firm is more likely to adopt and less likely to terminate a CVC unit when its innovation performance is closest to …

Parallel Session: Home-Based Female Entrepreneurs In Pakistan: An Exploratory Case Study, Faryal Salman, Amber Gul Rashid
International Conference on Marketing
Pakistani female entrepreneurs have received increasing attention in recent years as part of various initiatives. However, home-based female entrepreneurs still seem to be relegated to the background and have not received sufficient attention in academia or industry. In order to ensure that these female entrepreneurs are not only understood but also facilitated (if possible), it is crucial to understand how they function. These entrepreneurs are very often one of the key – yet unfortunately seldom acknowledged - enablers of economic activity. Given Pakistan‟s economic issues, these unsung heroines need to be nurtured. It is hoped that this case-based paper will …
Energy Sources And The Production Of Electricity In The United States, David Manukjan
Energy Sources And The Production Of Electricity In The United States, David Manukjan
Honors College Theses
The current sources of energy that the United States uses to produce electricity are costly, extremely damaging to the environment, and cause us to rely on other countries for our energy needs. The Obama Administration has begun working on replacing coal and oil with cleaner sources of energy. Over the last decade, alternative energy sources have been slowly gaining popularity as the American public learns more about climate change. However, the U.S. government will not use renewable energy as a complete substitute for fossil fuels in the immediate future because of their higher market price. The world is struggling to …

Poverty is an age long problem that has been part of mankind ever since civilization and the fight against poverty is as old. There are many efforts to fight poverty of which microfinance is one. One theory to explain prevalence of poverty especially in the age of capitalism is that poor enterprising people cannot lift themselves out of poverty because they lack capital to develop their enterprises. Start up businesses and enterprises commonly start operations with credit support from financial institutions but there are prerequisites to attaining this credit and numerous poor individuals do not possess these prerequisites. Such individuals …

Institutes of higher education exist for the purpose of developing, fostering, nurturing, and stimulating the intellectual growth and development of students. The core values of a college education provide students conceptual and practical educational opportunities that focus on improving their skills and knowledge. These skills and knowledge translate into purposeful, real-life learning experiences. However, in the academic community, learning is not restricted to students. Faculty, too, must be supported and provided opportunities for personal and professional growth and development. Although professional development is not a novel concept in the education profession, schools often take up the gauntlet, but fall short …

(This material was prepared by a mortgage securitization geek but simplified to make it straightforward for smart people to understand. This material should be exciting for those who want to discover why the financial banking system no longer works. Mortgage securitization is about nuance. To understand what drives the actions of banks, and sometimes why regulators are missing the picture, many finer nuances of mortgage securitization must be understood. This Memorandum is an attempt to identify common structural realities and the implication for business associated with those realities)

Alternative Models Of Funding Higher Education: Past And Present Trends, Gus Gregorutti

The present study is built around the following general research question: why is Adventist higher education in a tight budget? This is approached using a comparative time frame analysis of past and present needs and characteristics affecting funding tertiary education. The main idea throughout this paper is that the different funding systems are setting up models of Adventist higher education that aren’t always the best fit for the institutional ideology and organization. Possible alternatives to shift into a more suitable funding system are provided and discusses as well.

Ownership Structure, Firm Value And Investment Opportunities Set: Evidence From Mexican Firms, Juan M. San Martín-Reyna, Jorge A. Durán-Encalada
Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation JEMI
This paper analyses the influence of ownership, board of directors, and financial leverage on companies’ performance when these either face, or do not face, profitable growth opportunities. Towards that end we examined a sample of 83 listed Mexican firms during the period 2005-2011. The results confirm the relevance of debt and board of directors in terms of firm market value by showing a negative relationship between performance and both, board of directors and leverage, in the presence of growth opportunities. In contrast, the relationship between debt and performance becomes positive when firms have no profitable investment projects. The results also …

This article is a case study of a company operating in the MTM (Made to Measure) industry. The main issue of this manuscript is the evaluation and analysis of a company's intellectual capital in three main areas: human capital, structural and relational capital. The starting point was the analysis of the external environment, its opportunities and threats in relation to the identification of the strategic goals of the company. Against the background of these considerations, key business processes and desired business success of a company that contribute to the achievement of defined strategic objectives were identified. The article used the …

Effects Of Early Round Venture Capital Syndication On Ipo Exits In Europe And The United States, Rosabella M. Magat
Effects Of Early Round Venture Capital Syndication On Ipo Exits In Europe And The United States, Rosabella M. Magat
CMC Senior Theses
While the importance of venture capital (VC) can be highlighted by policy goals outlined in the 'Lisbon agenda', the European VC industry remains nascent in comparison to the more sophisticated VC market in the US. Researchers have identified key determinants that foster VC success on a broad level, and have often identified syndication as an important factor of success. This paper seeks to understand the role of syndication on the VC-backed company's success. I take a novel departure from past research in this area in three ways 1) I measure performance from the perspective of the portfolio company, rather than …
