Is It Time To Dump Your Vendor Management System?, Rihaz Z. Chughatta

Rihaz Z Chughatta

Most companies today have either implemented, or are exploring, some form of a Vendor Management System (VMS) to consolidate their external suppliers. Companies that sell a VMS point out that this system allows a Customer to get the most cost-effective solution for their needs within a certain category of suppliers; the “when suppliers compete, you win” mentality prevails. Some of the VMS even have performance metrics by which suppliers are measured and then rated in the system; thus making the case that not only does a VMS provide the most cost-effective, but also the best performing and most efficient solution …

This discussion highlights informed interaction between two knowledgeable parties about whether the residential mortgage asset backed securitization process involves the creation of an insurance product. Although an initial conclusion reached by an Insurance Examiner that it is not “insurance,” that same Examiner opened the door that it could be viewed as “insurance.” If it is determined that insurance is involved, the obligation to collect taxes falls onto the Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services, the requirement to collect balance sheets falls onto the Insurance Department, and the decision to prosecute originators for perpetuating a fraud on bank loan consumers falls …

Ownership Structure, Firm Value And Investment Opportunities Set: Evidence From Mexican Firms, Juan M. San Martín-Reyna, Jorge A. Durán-Encalada

Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation JEMI

This paper analyses the influence of ownership, board of directors, and financial leverage on companies’ performance when these either face, or do not face, profitable growth opportunities. Towards that end we examined a sample of 83 listed Mexican firms during the period 2005-2011. The results confirm the relevance of debt and board of directors in terms of firm market value by showing a negative relationship between performance and both, board of directors and leverage, in the presence of growth opportunities. In contrast, the relationship between debt and performance becomes positive when firms have no profitable investment projects. The results also …

What Determines Professionals’ Bankruptcy Fees: An Empirical Investigation, Gijs Van Dijk, Martin Gramatikov

Martin Gramatikov

Countries have adopted different approaches to compensate bankruptcy trustees for winding up the estate. The approaches vary from state trustees to funding mechanisms where bankruptcy trustees receive a fixed fee, to a system where their fees depend on the size of the assets. Few studies have addressed the cost-effectiveness of the different approaches. This study contributes to this topic by examining the fees of the winding up, including an analysis of the determinants of these fees. After analyzing 289 Dutch bankruptcies consisting of short-term and medium-term cases, we find substantial differences in the mean hourly remuneration fees of bankruptcy trustees. …
