Systematic Analysis Of Identifying Key Dimensions Of Environmentally And Socially Responsible Hotels, Courtney Suess Jan 2009

Systematic Analysis Of Identifying Key Dimensions Of Environmentally And Socially Responsible Hotels, Courtney Suess

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Development in Southeast Asia involves making good decisions for the future, so the idea that good planning can ignore sustainability is something of an oxymoron. Good development has to be sustainable and we have reached a point where the old ways of tourism development are intolerable. For example, hotels spring up without planning for the future. This short sightedness means natural endowments, like coastlines, erode and forests are cut down, chasing away the wildlife; or cultural history in the form of temples, historic buildings, and sacred places are destroyed. Ironically, tourism development is eradicating the very forms of product that …

Corporate Social Reporting In Sri Lanka Surrounding The Tsunami In 2004, Tilina Dharmaratne

Theses : Honours

There is a growing interest in studying corporate social reporting (CSR) around the world. This interest is specifically growing in developing countries. The importance of encouraging CSR is emphasised by The World Bank mainly because of the benefits associated with CSR to such developing countries. This study examines government influence, research and influence of changes in society expectations on CSR in Sri Lanka a developing country surrounding the tsunami in 2004. Research questions are proposed to examine the change in total quantity of CSR disclosures between the years 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. Four directional hypotheses and a null hypothesis …

Healing The Effects Of Medical Errors: A Vision Of Justice As Wholeness, Christiane Catharine Schubert Sep 2008

Healing The Effects Of Medical Errors: A Vision Of Justice As Wholeness, Christiane Catharine Schubert

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Medical errors cannot be avoided completely even when employing the greatest care and applying the most sophisticated medical technologies. They occur when organizational, human, technical, or environmental factors lead to unintentional failures which result in recognizable physical, mental, spiritual, or social harm to patients. Until recently, the medical profession has responded with silence while patients remained uncompensated or resorted to the legal system. Professional distancing undermines transparency and patient safety while medical malpractice litigation ruptures the fragile relationships between patients and healthcare providers in whom patients trust. Philosophically, these responses draw on the framework of deontological liberalism, promoting notions of …

On Human Migration And The Moral Obligations Of Business, Linda H. Harris Jan 2008

On Human Migration And The Moral Obligations Of Business, Linda H. Harris

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work addresses to what extent businesses in the United States and the European Union have a moral obligation to participate in social integration processes in areas where they operate with the use of migrant laborers. It begins with the presupposition that a common framework as to what constitutes ethical behavior in business is needed and beneficial. It argues that the very industry that creates a need for migrant labor ought to also be involved in merging this labor successfully into the existing community and specifies that a discourse on business ethics and migration is gravely needed. This must be …

Improving Corporate Governance : Character Education As A Supplement To Corporate Ethics Training, Richard L. Muney May 2007

Improving Corporate Governance : Character Education As A Supplement To Corporate Ethics Training, Richard L. Muney

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis explores the hypothesis that ethics training for corporate personnel will significantly increase ethical behavior and thereby significantly reduce the incidence of corporate malfeasance.

For over 100 years the federal government has been trying to curb malfeasance by managers of public corporations and their boards of directors. This thesis examines the history of that legislation and those regulatory efforts, concluding that these legislative and regulatory attempts have met with varying degrees of success, but, on balance, that success has been transitory at best. It also comes to the conclusion that corporate training programs in ethics, in the absence of …

Sex-Role Orientation, Women As Managers And Transformational Leadership Among Female Law Firm Partners And Subordinates, Nathalie Lynch-Walsh Oct 2006

Sex-Role Orientation, Women As Managers And Transformational Leadership Among Female Law Firm Partners And Subordinates, Nathalie Lynch-Walsh

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Nearly 30% of all attorneys in the U.S. are women, but only 17% of all partners in major U.S. law firms are women. The disparity in the number of women at the top of the legal profession echoes the shortage of women at the helm of major U.S. corporations. Traditional sex-role stereotypes represent one type of "glass ceiling" barrier and stem from the different behavioral norms assigned to men (agentic) and women (communal) based on relative social status. Women exhibiting nonconforming behavior are less liked than conforming women. Conversely, women exhibiting agentic behaviors such as selfconfidence and assertiveness are seen …

The Ethical Decision-Making Processes Of Professional Auditors In The People's Republic Of China, Mingzhi Liu Oct 2006

The Ethical Decision-Making Processes Of Professional Auditors In The People's Republic Of China, Mingzhi Liu

Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the effects of organizational ethical culture, idealism, relativism and guanxi orientation on the ethical decision-making processes of professional auditors in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). It is hypothesized that auditors perceiving a positive organizational ethical culture, possessing higher (lower) degrees of idealism (relativism), and possessing lower degrees of guanxi orientation will make more ethical decisions. The findings of the study indicate that certain aspects of organizational ethical culture had a significant effect on professional auditors’ behavioural intentions, but not on their ethical judgments. Idealism had a marginally significant impact on professional auditors’ behavioral intentions, but not …

International Law And Business Practice : Corporate Accountability And Compliance Issues In The Petroleum Industry, Emeka Duruigbo

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to strengthen international law by incorporating and integrating multinational corporations more fully into the international legal system. It argues that the undeniable role of multinational corporations as primary players in the global economy and international politics necessitates or demands adequate acknowledgement in the international legal structure. Accordingly, due recognition should be accorded the rights and privileges of multinationals. Concomitant to that, corresponding duties and responsibilities should be attached to these corporate entities in international law.

Many far-reaching advantages will flow from such development. The corporations will enjoy de jure protection, which would enhance their business operations across …

Enhancing The Auditor's Fraud Detection Ability: An Interdisciplinary Approach, Maria Krambia Kapardis Jan 1999

Enhancing The Auditor's Fraud Detection Ability: An Interdisciplinary Approach, Maria Krambia Kapardis

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

A contemporary issue of concern to both external auditors and financial statement users is fraud-detection by auditors. The ability of auditors to detect material irregularities, including fraud, should be enhanced to enable them to apply "reasonable skill and care" in carrying out the audit. Such proficiency in fraud detection is needed if the profession is to avoid costly litigation, ever-increasing indemnity insurance and erosion of the profession's credibility. The thesis maintains that such enhancement can be achieved if auditors both utilise knowledge about the aetiology of fraud in psychology, sociology and criminology as well as by synthesising a broad range …

Corporate Social Responsibility: A Cross Sectional Examination Of Incentivization, Jennifer A. Block Sep 1995

Corporate Social Responsibility: A Cross Sectional Examination Of Incentivization, Jennifer A. Block

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined corporate social responsibility and the most effective ways to incentivize environmentally proactive behavior among federal production contractors. The goal was to isolate factors which have the greatest potential for encouraging corporate environmental responsibility and to use the knowledge gained to construct incentives which can be incorporated into federal contracts. Relying on the concepts developed in organizational theory, four theories were presented to provide support that organizational behavior can be influenced. Previous incentive techniques used by the government were also investigated. From the initial research, a model was developed to describe the relationship between incentives and environmental responsibility. …

The Effects Of Perceived Consequences On Ethical Decisions, Eldean Gwen Cornish Nov 1991

The Effects Of Perceived Consequences On Ethical Decisions, Eldean Gwen Cornish

Honors Theses

Increasing public awareness of ethics in business, or a lack thereof, has inspired an abundance of study, research and a variety of theories regarding ethics and has encouraged many firms and associations to establish corporate and professional codes of ethics. This thesis begins with a literature review surrounding the definition of ethics and ethical decision-making behavior. The Theory of Reasoned Action model designed by Fishbein and Ajzen (1975) proposed a linkage of external variables and an individual's behavioral intention (Randall, 1989), the theory being that change is ultimately a result of changes in beliefs. Tests to predict behavior suffer from …

Corporate Proxies, Lyle A. Anderson Apr 1961

Corporate Proxies, Lyle A. Anderson

Graduate Thesis Collection

In this paper, I shall discuss the requirements of obtaining valid proxies under the various state laws and the regulations of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Because of the many state jurisdictions involved, it is not possible to define exactly the requirements of each. However, I shall follow the general practice and attempt to point out the significant variations therefrom. I shall also point out how several recent proxy contests were waged and make some recommendations for changes in SEC regulations and state laws to secure a greater voice for the independant stockholder.

A Survey Of Labor Legislation, Melvin Walde Burnett Jul 1948

A Survey Of Labor Legislation, Melvin Walde Burnett

Master's Theses

During the last fifty years, labor legislation and public opinion have fluctuated widely. People showed little interest in the unions and their fight for free collective bargaining, until the thirties when the New Deal ushered in a new era. President Roosevelt and the federal government, supported by public opinion, undortook to aid substantially the unions in their organizational and collective bargaining activities. By this time the people believed that one way to help recovery was to give every aid to unions, who in turn would fight for higher wages.

Corporation Income Tax Policy, Dee D. Sturges Jun 1948

Corporation Income Tax Policy, Dee D. Sturges

Economics ETDs

Randolph E. Paul's recent book, Taxation for Prosperity, more nearly coincides with the purpose of this study. The historical approach is used, and an attempt is made to formulate a more or less consistent policy for the immediate future. It covers the subject of federal taxation with emphasis on income taxes, but both the individual and corporation income tax are considered together with estate and trust taxes. In view of the proposal now before Congress to integrate the latter with the former taxes, this comprehensive treatment has merit.

However, this study is limited in scope and further differs from …
