Encouraging Entrepreneurship: Microfinance, Knowledge Support, And The Costs Of Operating In Institutional Voids, Subrata Chakrabarty, A. Erin Bass

This study focuses on the supplemented strategies of microfinance institutions (MFIs), in which the MFI offers nonfinancial services, such as entrepreneurship related knowledge, in addition to financial services to impoverished borrowers at the bottom of the pyramid (BoP). We examine two contextual factors–foreign direct investment (FDI) and loan defaults–to better understand the relationship between providing knowledge support to encourage entrepreneurship and costs of operating at the BoP for MFIs. In contexts where FDI is low and loan defaults are high, providing knowledge support to encourage entrepreneurship aggravates the MFI's costs of operating at the BoP. In this dissertation, I examine the impact of the characteristics of founding team on firm performance in new business ventures. In addition, this study investigates the moderating effects of the types of opportunities and the types of strategies on the relationships between founding teams' knowledge and firm performance. Despite the saliency of immigrant entrepreneurship, our understanding of the unique challenges of start-up processes confronting immigrant entrepreneurs is quite limited. While entrepreneurship as a field of study is growing rapidly, it is criticized for the lack of commonly accepted and well developed research paradigms. Two different fruitcake companies in the same small town are discussed and their widely different strategies are presented. Each of the entrepreneurs began working with a “master baker” as little boys but later followed different paths to develop a successful fruitcake business. A brief history of the fruitcake is offered as evidence that the product has been around for hundreds of years and will likely not go away anytime soon in spite of the ridicule and humor that has surrounded fruitcakes during the past twenty-five years.

The explosive growth of ‘accelerators’ in the United States has given entrepreneurs and their startups the opportunity to pursue seed-stage financing. While the specific economic role of accelerators remains unclear, a study comparing the selection of portfolio companies between accelerators and venture capitalists was performed. A difference of means was performed on the responses per question between the collected 19 accelerators’ response and the 100 venture capitalists’ response, recorded from a prior study. This article examines the changes in the market for entrepreneurship faculty over the past 23 years. Data is provided from June, 1989 through June, 2012 on advertised candidates and positions throughout the world. There were several significant findings in this study. During the academic year 2011/12 there were 319 total advertised entrepreneurship positions of which 202 (63%) were seeking a candidate with a primary interest in entrepreneurship. This is the highest number of primary positions since this study was initiated in 1989. This article fills a need in the entrepreneurship literature by investigating the finances of entrepreneurship centers throughout the world. Entrepreneurship center directors were surveyed (249 U.S. and 111 Global) about the various facets of their center’s finances. We received 174 responses for a 49% response rate (U.S. 49%, international 49%). We explore the financing of entrepreneurship centers and the relationship between U.S. and international centers. The results of this research project can be used as a benchmark for entrepreneurship center directors in understanding the financial challenges confronting their centers.

Utilizing institutional theory, this article examines data based on the trends in the market for entrepreneurship faculty over the past 22 years. Data is provided from June, 1989 through June, 2011 on advertised candidates and positions throughout the world. The paper shows that the field of entrepreneurship has become increasingly institutionalized over the past 10 years. However, more recent evidence shows a significant increase of non tenure track positions. A discussion of the results follows.
