Stephen Covey’S Leadership Approach And The Quest For Ethics In Leadership, Ezekiel Ifeanyichukwu Oko
Stephen Covey’S Leadership Approach And The Quest For Ethics In Leadership, Ezekiel Ifeanyichukwu Oko
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This article brings valuable insights from Stephen Covey’s Principle-Centered Leadership (PCL) to the limelight as a contribution to the critical efforts of leadership practitioners and scholars to remedy organizations and societies through quest for ethics in leadership and practice of value-based leadership (VBL). It explored the major ideas and content of PCL and demonstrated its significance in the current leadership research. Firstly, with a meta-analysis in comparison with five recent key theories of leadership, it revealed that those theories adopt the insights of PCL to a great extent. Secondly, subjecting PCL to the evaluative criteria of leadership ethics, it demonstrated …
Weakness Is The New Strength: How Vulnerability Makes Leaders Stronger, Scott Dick
Weakness Is The New Strength: How Vulnerability Makes Leaders Stronger, Scott Dick
Transform
Weakness is the new strength: How vulnerability makes leaders stronger is the result from the meta-analysis of five phenomenological studies designed to generate a theory that explains how exemplar leaders from five different fields used “soft-skills” and four domains of behavior to create mutual shared knowledge, resolve conflict and transform relationships to produce breakthrough results. The four domains of behavior are communication, collaboration, ethics, and emotional intelligence. The sample was composed of 75 exemplar leaders from five different professional fields and included an analysis of over 1,300 pages of interview transcripts as the main data source for the study. The …

With Name, Image, And Likeness, College Sports Enters The Gig Economy, Sam C. Ehrlich, Joe Sabin, Neal C. Ternes
Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
With the arrival of name, image, and likeness (NIL), the college sports labor market has distinctly taken on similar characteristics to the gig economy, with athletes able to earn extra compensation through external NIL-based independent contractor “gigs.” But with this comparison comes comparable issues, and scholarship and litigation examining and challenging gig economy structures have identified several legal and ethical concerns both individual to each worker and more broadly affecting labor markets. Building off this literature, we conceptualize the NIL phenomenon within the gig economy space, exploring the legal and ethical concerns that have plagued companies like Uber and applying …

Dealing With “Humanewashing” Claims: Vital Farms’ Crucial Next Step, Bryce Janke, Cole Johnson, Kieran Mcwilliams, Justin Morrow, Isabelle Schmidt
B-Corp Case Studies by UNL Raikes Seniors
Vital Farms prides itself in their ethical and environmentally-friendly production of pasture-raised eggs, butter, and ghee. A popular tagline for the company is “keeping it bullsh*t-free.” This is core to their company mission and values. However, they are currently facing a PETA class action lawsuit for potential humanewashing and greenwashing, essentially false advertising. So, what happens when the Certified B-Corporation is under attack for the very thing that sets it apart from its competition? Is it possible to rebuild trust with the public and regain ethical standing after bad PR? What are humanewashing and greenwashing, and is Vital Farms guilty?

Patagonia’S Identity: Balancing Mission And Growth, Grace Clausen, Michael Kelly, Brysen Reeser, Liam Seper, Andy Zhang
B-Corp Case Studies by UNL Raikes Seniors
This case study examines the challenges Patagonia has faced in attempting to balance its mission of sustainability and company growth. Since its inception, Patagonia has been dedicated to environmentalism and sustainability. They demonstrate this dedication through numerous ways including donating to environmental groups, using recycled materials to make their products, and implementing renewable energy in their production practices. However, as the company has scaled, it has made decisions to meet the needs of its growing customer base and increasing demand, which has led to conflicts with its mission. Additionally, Patagonia’s hard stance on sustainability puts every action they take under …
Corporate Foreign Policy In War, Kishanthi Parella
Corporate Foreign Policy In War, Kishanthi Parella
Scholarly Articles
On February 24, 2022, Russian troops invaded Ukraine. Over a year later, the war has claimed tens of thousands of lives and led to the displacement of millions. In Spring 2023, both Ukrainian and Russian forces prepared new offensives, while the United States committed to providing Ukraine with military tanks—a move that Russian officials had previously warned would constitute direct involvement in the war. While countries debated how to respond, we also witnessed the privatization of foreign policy as hundreds of companies around the world similarly sought to assist Ukraine or punish Russia using the tools of national foreign policy—humanitarian …
An Enterprise Risk Management Framework To Design Pro-Ethical Ai Solutions, Quintin P. Mcgrath
An Enterprise Risk Management Framework To Design Pro-Ethical Ai Solutions, Quintin P. Mcgrath
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The effective use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has immediate business benefits for an organization and its stakeholders through efficiency and quality gains, and the potential to explore and implement new business models. However, there are risks of unintended ethical consequences. Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) focuses on managing risk while maximizing business value from exploiting opportunities. Using applied ethics as a basis and the perspective that ethics includes both enabling human flourishing and not violating accepted norms, I argue that greater business value is achieved when an organization simultaneously targets the maximization of benefits and the minimization of harms for the …

Budget Gaming: Politics, Ethics, And Compensation, Gretchen Decker
Budget Gaming: Politics, Ethics, And Compensation, Gretchen Decker
Dissertations
Practitioners are frustrated with the budgeting process, frequently complaining that budgets cause undesirable and political behaviors in the organization (Jensen, 2001). One of the most frequent problems is budget gaming, which critics consider non-value added and frustrating. In a 2010 survey, over 95% of respondents acknowledged that budget gaming exists at least “occasionally” (Libby & Lindsay, 2010). Previous studies indicate budget gaming is frustrating, prevalent, and wasteful (Hansen et al., 2003; Libby & Lindsay, 2007; Neely et al., 2003).
I conducted an experiment to investigate organizational influences (organizational politics, compensation condition, ethics attestation) and their impact on budget gaming. The …
Corporate Ethical Training: An Answer To White-Collar Crimes, Richard Pitre, Claudius Claiborne
Corporate Ethical Training: An Answer To White-Collar Crimes, Richard Pitre, Claudius Claiborne
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
The modern business corporation is a culturally significant component of American Society. It is facing a cultural invasion of the highest order. The categorical imperative, an unconditional principle that rational individuals must follow despite natural desires or inclinations to do otherwise, is today being called into question. This is most likely the result of grounding moral values upon information that is transient and unstable rather than upon established data. The social contract, which governs the formation and maintenance of individual morals, is a requirement in organizations that demands collective agency – employees acting together to set forth moral rules of …

Senior Honors Theses
The Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification is the most industry-recognized certification due to the rigorous requirements and credibility of the Project Management Institute (PMI), (Alexander, 2020). PMI requires members and certification holders to abide by the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, which prioritizes four main value areas: responsibility, respect, fairness, and honesty (Project Management Institute, 2006). The following research and analysis aim to define each value area by connecting project management methodologies and ethical business dilemmas through each value area’s accompanying subsections.
Leading Organizational Learning, Jessica C. Wells
Leading Organizational Learning, Jessica C. Wells
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Leadership is hard to define but easy to recognize and is found in every facet of life. Leaders themselves range from good to bad, the extremities of which are determined by their character, actions, perception of self, how they are perceived by others and their worldviews. An individual’s values provide the basis for ethical decisions, which makes self-awareness a critical element in the development of one’s leader identity. This article provides an overview of leader identity development and offers ways for leaders to apply ethics in their everyday lives.
Influencing Capitalist Attitudes To Drive More Capital Towards Social Good, Leah Michelle Burton
Influencing Capitalist Attitudes To Drive More Capital Towards Social Good, Leah Michelle Burton
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The purpose of this study is to better understand how to influence capitalist attitudes and drive more capital towards social good. This is why we must explore the prospect of emancipating the capitalists from capitalism. This study identifies capitalism as a form of oppression that is contributing to a newly developed ethics of capital, a term introduced in this study. Emancipatory action research and general systems theory were employed as the primary approaches to engaging a group of venture capitalists and finance professionals in activities and dialogues. Value2 is the theory of action I use to influence the attitudes of …

Zero Textbook Cost Syllabus For Mgt 3800 (Management And Society), Jared Peifer
Open Educational Resources
The course aims to help students better understand how business interacts with society. The dramatic rise in the exchange of goods, information, services and capital around the world makes business a driving force in global society. Yet, the evolving expectations of corporate stakeholders (e.g., customers, investors, governments and civil society groups) are not well understood. Corporations are expected to meet ever-higher standards of care wherever they operate. Stakeholders expect managers to make a profit for their companies in ways that are lawful, socially responsible and contribute to the welfare of society. Tomorrow’s business leaders will need to be equipped with …
Leaving Your Mark: Seven Strategies For Indelible Leadership, James S. Welch Jr
Leaving Your Mark: Seven Strategies For Indelible Leadership, James S. Welch Jr
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
One of the major concerns within contemporary leadership consists in the myopic view many leaders and followers have regarding leadership success. In the modern context, there are countless firms engaging in some variation of myopic management simply to drive short-term results. To counteract the short term view of leadership, this article presents a leadership construct focusing on seven strategies designed to help facilitate long term leadership impact and organizational sustainability. The seven strategies examined in this article consist of the following: embracing organizational diversity, encouraging positive change, displaying emotional intelligence, possessing a long term orientation, casting a strategic vision, developing …

Social Responsibility: Preparing Students For The Real World, Alicen Flosi, Jeff Dyson, Gisele Moss
Southwestern Business Administration Journal
Ethics and corporate social responsibility are widely discussed in business and in the classroom. In fact, many mission statements for Colleges of Business include ethics as a major component. As corporations become increasingly aware of their impact on the environment, sustainability and social responsibility have become significant issues for many executives.
How to “teach” ethics and social responsibility is a dilemma that has been addressed with no definitive solution. Research shows that the traditional model of teaching and/or learning is outdated. In many disciplines, instructor/lecture and student note-taking are outdated methods of teaching. To increase student engagement and to reach …

Factors Influencing The Ethical Decisions Of Small Business Owners And Managers In Emerging Markets: The Case Of India, La Toya M. Russell
ETD Archive
For decades, research has shown the importance of ethics in the business environment. With the increased internationalization of corporations, the need for a focus on international business ethics has also increased. To date, research has predominantly focused on business ethics in large firms and the factors that affect the ethical decision-making processes of the managers and executives in these firms. What appears to be limited in literature is ethics and ethical decision-making as it relates to small businesses. With the economic importance of small businesses, this area of research needs to be explored especially from a cross-cultural basis. This dissertation …
Employees Expectation From Leaders' Ethics In Decision Making, Shirley Easter
Employees Expectation From Leaders' Ethics In Decision Making, Shirley Easter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The presence of unethical behavior continues to plague the global business community, however, and its impact in the finance industry is widely thought to be having an even more devastating impact than ever before. Scholarly literature provides little understanding of what drives ethical decision making, or the processes involved and a little evidence that ethical standards have been developed as part of leadership decision making training in finance. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore the drivers and processes in the development of training that supports ethical choices that leaders make in their decision-making role within …
Internalised Values And Fairness Perception: Ethics In Knowledge Management, Isabel D. W. Rechberg
Internalised Values And Fairness Perception: Ethics In Knowledge Management, Isabel D. W. Rechberg
Publications and Research
This chapter argues for ethical consideration in knowledge management (KM). It explores the effect that internalised values and fairness perception have on individuals’ participation in KM practices. Knowledge is power, and organisations seek to manage knowledge through KM practices. For knowledge to be processed, individual employees—the source of all knowledge—need to be willing to participate in KM practices. As knowledge is power and a key constituent part of knowledge is ethics, individuals’ internalised values and fairness perception affect knowledge-processing. Where an organisation claims ownership over knowledge, an individual may perceive being treated unfairly, which may obstruct knowledge-processing. Through adopting ethical …

Mergers: What Ethical Leaders Can Do To Help Ensure Success, Barbie Pike
The Siegel Institute Journal of Applied Ethics
Abstract
This paper looks at several research articles which include discussions on the success and failures of mergers. Mergers continue to rise in number even though there is a lack of evidence showing positive results. Though failure rates for mergers are high, there is a large amount of research showing what organizations and more specifically leaders can do to ensure the success of mergers. This paper examines things that ethical leaders can do to positively impact the introduction, transition, and outcome of mergers when considering culture, the size of the organization, diversity, conflict, change, role modeling, team building, communication, planning …

Does Machiavelli’S The Prince Have Relevant Lessons For Modern High-Tech Managers And Leaders?, Clovia Hamilton
Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications
When we think of Machiavellian conduct in technology companies, we think of cut-throat, cunning, behaviour. Cut-throat competition in technological innovations can be the barrier to market entry (Lee, 2014). The lean philosophy is that managers and leaders are to strive for the efficient and effective use of resources in order to overcome this barrier and gain competitive advantage. In order for there to be cut throats, there have to be cut-throat technology innovation leaders and managers. What the lean philosophy lacks is guidance on how to achieve an efficient and effective use of resources in a cut-throat competitive environment. The …

The Pr Of Csr For The Casino Industry: A Review Of Challenging Corporate Social Responsibility: Lessons For Public Relations From The Casino Industry, Andrew B. Gustafson
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
This is a review of Jessalynn Strauss' recent book, Challenging Corporate Social Responsibility: Lessons for Public Relations from the Casino Industry. Through an analysis of Casino’s CSR practices, Strauss raises some serious concerns about this alignment between CSR and PR, and provides reasons to doubt whether SCR done for strategic bottom line interests rather than purely ethical reasons will consistently accomplish what the casinos set out to achieve.

Servant leadership (SL), a universal, ethical leadership style, consistently produces high performance and employee engagement. For the last two decades, lack of business ethics in decision making by senior leaders has resulted in many negative outcomes, such as the WorldCom scandal. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to identify and report the lived experiences of senior leaders in relation to decision making in SL organizations in the southwestern United States. The study's theoretical/conceptual foundations encompassed Maslow's motivation theories, decision theory, spirituality, spiritual intelligence, Cicero's virtue theory of ethics, and Greenleaf's SL. Data collection involved the use of semistructured …

Stakeholders' Perceptions Of Ethical Leadership: Implications For Organizational Success, Adejobi Sunday Odeneye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Leaders focus on the attainment of personal and organizational goals without consideration for the needs of stakeholders, especially those of followers. Ethical leadership (EL) studies' focus on leaders' perspectives represented a research gap that necessitated this study. Followers are the least researched among stakeholders; thus, this study explored EL from their viewpoints. Stakeholder theory, social learning theory, eudaimonia, and utilitarianism were the conceptual frameworks that guided this study. Twenty participants drawn from followers in a public organization in New Jersey were questioned about their experiences and expectations of EL using open-ended interview questions. Participants with shared experiences were selected based …

Mercy And Business: A Partnership For Catholic University Business Students, Arlene J. Nicholas
Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers
A university mission that reflects mercy and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition can be integrated into business courses. Critical to this integration is the willingness of students to embrace concepts such as fairness and mercy, as part of their lives beyond academia; that caring for others is inclusive in business and private life. Some examples in management courses include; the protection from harassment or disenfranchisement of any ethnic, economic or lifestyle differences; fairness of applications, interviews and testing, and opportunities for training and promotions. In all business courses, the understanding of cultural dimensions and respect for others are emphasized.

Research Brief: "Military Ceos", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This study found that firms run by CEOs who have served in the military have lower investment and Research and Development (R&D) expenditures. In practice, firms and organizations should consider hiring chief executive officers (CEOs) with military experience if they are looking for “change agents” who will create an ethical, effective, and team-oriented organizational culture. In policy, the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Labor (DoL), and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) might partner to ensure that material on business leadership, human resource management in the civilian sector, and business ethics are integrated into program offerings, including TAP. CORE
In this module, students consider various ethical codes relevant in a position of leadership. By the end of the module, students will be able to differentiate between ethics and morals, examine how ethics and morals play a role in the decision making process, reframe their preconceptions of ethical decisions, and compare ethical and unethical paths to reach a certain goal. This module examines case studies of different ethical scenarios that challenge students to discuss different perspectives and develop their own opinions. Ethical and unethical leaders are also examined through historical and contemporary examples. Specifically, students look at the reasons behind …
