Self-service technologies are currently being used in more diverse ways for new services than once thought possible. The expenditure on self-service kiosks is expected to rise by 88% and the dollar value of transactions taking place through self-service technology should exceed 1.3 trillion by 2007 (Avery, …

Globalization Of R&D And Developing Countries, Arash Golnam, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Ali Ghazizadeh

Nader Ale Ebrahim

Reflecting a broader trend towards the off shoring of services, a number of developing countries are attracting foreign direct investment in research and development. Transnational corporations, including the ones headquartered in developed countries, are selecting developing countries as locations for such activities. With the off shoring of research and development, firms aim to access the skills of new locations, adapting products to local markets and reducing their costs, in response to competitive pressures, technological changes and a more liberal trade and investment environment. In particular, information and communication technologies have had a profound effect on the way economic activities, including …

Evaluation Of An Expanded Satellite Based Mobile Communications Tracking System, Maciek Nowak, Alan L. Erera

Information Systems and Operations Management: Faculty Publications & Other Works

Since the terrorist events in the United States on September 11, 2001, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has been testing and evaluation cargo tracking technologies to improve the safety, security and efficiency of commercial motor vehicle operations. While satellite-based systems used for tracking vehicles and cargo provide sufficient geographic coverage in the majority of the United States, there remain several vital regions that are uncovered and difficult to monitor. One such region is Alaska, where officials are particularly concerned with the hazardous materials shipments that are transported parallel to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. This article analyzes the risks and benefits …

“Go Live In ’05”—From Hierarchy To Shared Governance In Higher Education, Peter A. Maresco

WCBT Faculty Publications

Higher education is in the midst of a major transformation evidenced by several factors: greater demands from stakeholders; pressure to increase student enrollment, financial uncertainty, limited resources, and a responsibility to contribute to the community’s civic and economic development. Faculty and staff in higher education are challenged to deliver education in innovative ways. This innovation requires an expedient method of governance and necessitates careful examination of the organization’s structural, cultural, and decision-making processes. To meet these demands, leaders in higher education must examine decision-making processes and design governance models that respond quickly and efficiently to their myriad of constituents.

The Challenges Of Inter-Organizational Business Process Design – A Research Agenda, Christine Legner, Kristin Wende

Hubert Oesterle

Given the increasing importance of value chain collaboration, business processes need to be more closely aligned across organizational boundaries. Hence, business process modeling and design have to be enhanced and extended to cope with inter-organizational business relationships. Among the challenges that arise are interdependencies between internal and external processes, different process logic and terminology, missing clarification of responsibilities and confidentiality issues. This paper analyzes existing approaches to business process modeling, workflow management and B2B standardization with regard to the specific requirements concerning inter-organizational business process design. It extracts the relevant concepts addressing these requirements and draws up an agenda for …

Soa Adoption In Practice - Findings From Early Soa Implementations, Christine Legner, Roger Heutschi

Hubert Oesterle

Despite the wide range of advantages which many authors associate with the introduction of a service-oriented architecture (SOA), comprehensive SOA implementations continue to be scarce in practice. Consequently, questions arise as to how the concept is adapted in practice. This paper compares the scientific view of SOA concepts with initial practical experience from first SOA implementations. Based on an SOA model which is derived from recent SOA publications it examines SOA realization in four case studies. From the cross-case analysis, the authors derive three focus areas of SOA adoption, a prioritization of SOA design principles as well as typical steps …
