Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to investigate how ventures manage the negative returns associated with higher levels of internationalization. Many new ventures are internationalizing to fully exploit new innovations and/or gain access to larger markets. Yet at some point the rising costs associated with internationalization outweigh any benefits, resulting in an inverted U-shaped relationship between internationalization and performance.
Design/methodology/approach
– New ventures are theorized to better manage high levels of internationalization by limiting exposure to other sources of risk. This can be achieved by leveraging greater size and/or limiting simultaneous diversification efforts on product innovation. To test …

In this article, we argue that firms in high-margin industries can benefit from founding family influence. Specifically, in more profitable markets, the influence of the founding family provides an additional corporate governance-monitoring function. The sample consists of 294 firm-year observations from 98 publicly traded companies headquartered in Sweden, representing approximately half of all nonfinancial traded firms. Our support that the effect of family leadership in publicly held firms should be assessed in relation to the intensity of industry competition.

Factors Critical In Overcoming The Liability Of Newness: Highlighting The Role Of Family, Clay Dibrell, Justin Craig, Ken Moores, Aaron Johnson, Peter David

With a focus on the role of family, we explore factors critical in enabling start-up ventures to attain legitimacy and overcome the liability of newness. Drawing from multiple interviews with leaders of seven start-up ventures, we investigate the function of a variety of factors [e.g., family, distributors, financial supporters, etc.] deemed critical in attaining venture legitimacy. To validate our findings, we conducted additional interviews with three established family ventures. Our discussion highlights the role of family as a legitimizing strategy and provides an increased awareness of how internal and external resources are leveraged by the start-up to gain legitimacy.

The termination of a collegiate athletic career is inevitable for all student athletes. The purpose of this study was to explore student athletes’ perceptions of the athletic career transition process. One-hundred-andforty- three (n = 143) National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II student athletes were administered the Life After Sports Scale (LASS) designed by the authors. The LASS is a 58-item mixed method inventory. The scope of this inquiry explored the qualitative section, which examined participants’ perceptions that were visually primed with a narrative description of a student athlete who made the transition out of collegiate sport successfully.
