Inclusive Business: Using For-Profit Business Models To Address Global Poverty, Samuel James Conner Apr 2013

Inclusive Business: Using For-Profit Business Models To Address Global Poverty, Samuel James Conner

Senior Honors Theses

Due to the rise of globalization, modernization, and the Internet revolution, awareness of global poverty has expanded, making its eradication a chief goal of the global development community for the twenty-first century. Though corporations are often expected to participate in social and community development initiatives without regard for profits, this paper presents inclusive business as a way for businesses to profitably engage impoverished segments of society. Inclusive businesses seek to expand their consumer bases or strengthen their supply chains by moving into new markets among the poor that have limited access to global markets and remain largely untapped. The research …

The Emergence Of A Standards Market: Multiplicity Of Sustainability Standards In The Global Coffee Industry, Juliane Reinecke, Stephan Manning, Oliver Von Hagen

Stephan Manning

The growing number of voluntary standards for governing transnational arenas is presenting standards organizations with a problem. While claiming that they are pursuing shared, overarching objectives, at the same time, they are promoting their own respective standards that are increasingly similar. By developing the notion of ‘standards markets,’ this paper examines this tension and studies how different social movement and industry-driven standards organizations compete as well as collaborate over governance in transnational arenas. Based on an in-depth case study of sustainability standards in the global coffee industry, we find that the ongoing co-existence of multiple standards is being promoted by …

The Trojan Fish Strategy, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

How does an ornamental fish exporter grow its bottom line? Simple: By adopting and adapting the business model of the world’s most famous safety razor company. The Gillette Business Model, also known as Freebie Marketing, is much copied because of its simplicity: sell razors at a loss, or even give them away free, but make back your money with the disposable blade replacements. That same strategy has served many industries well

Evolution De La Coopétition Dans Un Cluster: Le Cas De Waipara Dans Le Secteur Du Vin, Leo Paul Dana, Julien Granata Jan 2013

Evolution De La Coopétition Dans Un Cluster: Le Cas De Waipara Dans Le Secteur Du Vin, Leo Paul Dana, Julien Granata

Leo- Paul Dana

The Waipara case study contributes to understanding developments in wine production clusters over time, in particular the coopetition relationship between cluster members. This longitudinal analysis is based on two primary data collection stages using semi-structured interviews. Formalizing cluster actions and strengthening collaboration among its members seem to contribute to developing a collaborative spirit. This strengthened collaboration hinders competition whereas the latter would seem to be indispensable for the coopetitive strategy’s success.

The Evolution Of Co-Opetition In The Waipara Wine Cluster Of New Zealand, Leo Paul Dana, Julien Granata, Frank Lasch, Alan Carnaby

Leo- Paul Dana

The co-opetion literature has long focused on the explanatory variables for competitors engaging in cooperative relationships. Yet,there is a gap in understanding the evolution of coopetition. In this article, we re-visit an embryonic cluster in New Zealand and investigate changes over time. The paper examines a regional wine cluster against a background of industry restructuring, competition and internationalization. The study thus contributes to our understanding of the evolution of a regional wine cluster and its implications for wine business. The originality of the paper is twofold: first, the paper uses the co-opetition approach to provide a better understanding of cooperation and …
