This paper examines the key characteristics of nonprofit organizations, analyzes the data obtained from the IRS, provides a snapshot of the nonprofit sector in Missouri, discusses the breakdown of various types of these organizations, compares the nonprofit sectors in Missouri and at the national level, and highlights key statistics of the sector. As of November 2022, Missouri is home to 38,460 nonprofit organizations, out of which 501(c)(3), 501(c)(7), and 501(c)(4) are the most common IRS tax codes. By the NTEE classification system, the top two classifiable categories of Missouri nonprofits are human services and religious congregations. The Missouri nonprofit sector …

In a 2016 Show-Me Institute essay, Michael Podgursky and Nick Pretnar demonstrated the proportional importance to the state economy of Missouri’s two dominant metro areas.1 As they report, the St. Louis and Kansas City metro areas together account for well over half of Missouri’s economic output (64 percent of gross state product in 2013), indicating that the aggregate performance of the state economy is largely determined by the performance of the two metro areas’ economies. In this essay I take this idea a step further and examine whether there is more than simply a proportional relationship.

In Summary, the findings in this report confirm the necessity and urgency for improved data collection and advocacy for the St. Louis data economy. In order for the MSA to become a nationally recognized tech hub to attract and retain competitive tech talent, the St. Louis Metro will need to aggressively address the industry disparities in diverse representation, pay gaps, and occupational growth. Additional data collection and ongoing research will allow the region to report more comprehensively on these metrics, as well as expand into more targeted industry analyses like the Big 15 Emerging Technologies identified by TechSTL.

Farmers and ranchers will have to increase production by approximately 70% by the year 2050 according to the American Farm Bureau Federation (2017). People in the agriculture industry face several challenges from start-up costs to limited land availability (Ahearn, 2011). There are federal and state government programs available to assist with some of these challenges but bring their own hardships as well. Official unemployment rates produced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) are intended to capture the extent to which the economy is generating employment for those adults who want to work. It has been known for some time, however, that, because of the discouraged-worker effect, the official unemployment rates understate the true extent of unemployment. The BLS produces alternative measures that are meant to address this problem, but, because these measures exclude anyone who has been discouraged for more than a year, they are inadequate given the prolonged nature of the current recovery.

Late last year, researchers at The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) spent weeks poring over state and federal inspection reports, investigators’ photographs, and enforcement records to compile a list of some of the worst puppy mills in Missouri, known as “Missouri’s Dirty Dozen.” The report included direct quotes detailing horrific care violations documented in the facilities’ federal and/or state kennel inspection reports. The purpose of the report is to demonstrate current problems that could be addressed by the passage of Proposition B, which Missouri citizens will vote on in November. Under Proposition B, the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act, many of these dealers’ horrific violations would be backed by stronger enforcement opportunities.
