Strategies To Generate Innovation For Profit Gains Of U.S.-Based Global Retailing, Kazue Goto
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Ineffective innovation strategies can negatively affect profit gains of U.S.-based global retailing companies (USGRC). Leaders in the retailing industry who fail to use strategies to generate innovation for profit gains can experience decreased profitability. Grounded in the dynamic theory of strategy, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies that leaders of USGRC use to generate innovation for profit gains. Participants included six USGRC leaders in California, who used strategies to generate innovation for profit gains. Data were collected from semistructured interviews, company documents and analyzed using thematic data analysis. Three themes emerged: customer-centric opportunity identification …

For many business segments, true “out of the box” innovation occurs in entrepreneurial companies where the founders aren’t hindered with the research paradigms established by mainstream businesses. The founders of these companies, many times technologists and scientists, see the application of the technology long before potential customers develop an understanding of the capabilities that the new technology can bring to the marketplace. Many times these “new technology ideas” have been developed though modifying an existing dominant design (product or service) to meet an unforeseen market need or through the development of a new design that may become the new industry …

When The Far East Becomes The Near East, Kylan Rutherford
Marriott Student Review
America is in a critical stage of change in its international roles. The world has shifted away from the dated Cold-War binaries and surface-level, orientalist understandings of the East. The rising generation in America has the potential to connect with the international world in unprecedented ways, but for that to happen we have some homework to do.

Buying Unicorns: The Impact Of Consumer-To-Consumer Branded Buy/Sell/Trade Communities On Traditional Retail Buying Behavior, Catherine Armstrong Soule, Sara Hanson
Marketing Faculty Publications
Branded buy/sell/trade (BBST) is a consumer-to-consumer (C2C) selling phenomenon that is both massive in scale and meaningful in its impact on consumer behavior and the traditional retailing landscape. Consumers buy, sell, and trade one focal brand’s products in these social media-hosted, consumer-initiated communities. This article introduces the phenomenon, differentiates it from other forms of C2C exchange, and explores relationships between members and the brand. Although brands may view these activities as a potential threat to retail sales, the effects are more complex and paradoxical. The authors present data collected from Facebook, in-depth interviews, and a survey. Findings suggest that buyer-sellers …

Business leaders face leadership crises as executives from the baby boomer generation retire, creating a shortage of experienced and knowledgeable leaders. Some business leaders are unprepared for the replacement of retiring senior-level executives and lack strategies for succession planning. Stakeholder Theory, Value, And Firm Performance, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Andrew C. Wicks
Stakeholder Theory, Value, And Firm Performance, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Andrew C. Wicks
Management Faculty Publications
This paper argues that the notion of value has been overly simplified and narrowed to focus on economic returns. Stakeholder theory provides an appropriate lens for considering a more complex perspective of the value that stakeholders seek as well as new ways to measure it. We develop a four-factor perspective for defining value that includes, but extends beyond, the economic value stakeholders seek. To highlight its distinctiveness, we compare this perspective to three other popular performance perspectives. Recommendations are made regarding performance measurement for both academic researchers and practitioners. The stakeholder perspective on value offered in this paper draws attention …
Measuring Normlessness In The Workplace: A Study Of Organizational Anomie In The Academic Setting, Tayo Glenn Switzer
Measuring Normlessness In The Workplace: A Study Of Organizational Anomie In The Academic Setting, Tayo Glenn Switzer
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The dissertation explores leadership and change by examining normlessness in the workplace through a multi-layered study of anomie theory, anomie research in the workplace, and organizational and business management theory. The research validates a quantitative survey designed to measure the level of normlessness experienced by workgroups within an organizational context. The survey reflects a set of six normative aspects that when disrupted produce organizational anomie—a state of normlessness that leads to an increase in worker resistance and a reduction in worker consent. The audience studied in this dissertation is associate professors at a large Midwestern research university. Data were gathered …

The Effect Of Compensation Committee Quality On The Association Between Ceo Cash Compensation And Accounting Performance, Jerry Sun, Steven Cahan
Odette School of Business Publications
We examine the effect of compensation committee quality on the association between CEO cash compensation and accounting earnings and the moderating effects of growth opportunities and earnings status.
Research Findings/Insights: Using a sample of 812 US firms, we find that CEO cash compensation is more positively associated with accounting earnings when firms have high compensation committee quality. We also find that the positive effect of compensation committee quality on the association between CEO cash compensation and accounting earnings is less for high growth firms or loss-making firms.Theoretical
Implications: We contribute to the agency-based research on CEO compensation by: 1) directly …

Participative Management: Selective Means Effective, J. Kenneth Matejka, D. Neil Ashworth
Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022
Participative management has been a hot topic of debate for decades. intuitively, if workers are allowed to take part in decision that affect their work lives they should be happier and, therefore, more productive. While this hypothesis is attractive, especially to caring managers and writers, the effective use of PM has proven to be much more complicated than originally anticipated. What is PM? What costs are associated with PM? What benefits does PM produce? When can PM be used most effectively?
To date, management experts and practitioners have agreed to disagree regarding PM. Conflicting and ambiguous studies and experiences abound. …
