Toolkit For Managing Virtual Teams, Grace Mccarthy
Toolkit For Managing Virtual Teams, Grace Mccarthy
Grace McCarthy
Leaders in multi-national organisations have to work with team members in many different locations, with few if any face to face meetings. This poses problems for leaders used to working face to face. This article briefly reviews the literature, finding some consensus that leadership is significant in managing virtual teams but that the practices adopted by leaders need to be adapted, that trust is one of the key predictors of success, and that technology and training also help improve performance of virtual teams.

Three Good Steward Habits, Ken A. Margolies
Ken Margolies
[Excerpt] I learned these habits from a former colleague, Jessica Govea Thourborne, who developed them when she was one of the founding members of the United Farm Workers Union with Caesar Chavez. Cancer took Jessica from us, but her legacy lives on and there are hundreds of dedicated union and community activists inspired by her who have adopted her good work habits.
Lead Through Resources, Terri L. Griffith
Lead Through Resources, Terri L. Griffith
Management & Entrepreneurship
The global economic situation pushes us all to make do with less. Many leaders are grappling with years of slow growth with continued high expectations for performance. The pressure is on to lead to the "next big thing," without more people or supporting resources. Leaders are challenged to squeeze water out of a rock- and it's a rock that has been squeezed for a long time. I do see hope, however. As Jim Kouzes notes: Challenge is the greatest opportunity for greatness!

In seeking to discern God's will for their lives, top-echelon Christian leaders would do well to consider the biblical ideals embedded in the concept of kingship. The paper explores the biblical characteristics of the ideal king with the goal of identifying lessons for contemporary top-echelon leaders. It also reviews the connection between creation and kingship and the biblical concept of the Kingship of God, biblical guidance available in the selection, anointing and annual renewal of the king, and the duties and role of the king. It draws lessons regarding contemporary top-echelon Christian leaders in terms of personal traits, behaviors and …

Smarter Intentions & Authentic Goals, Connie I. Reimers-Hild
Kimmel Education and Research Center: Faculty and Staff Publications
Intentions influence our actions and behaviors. If intentions are established with awareness, truth, and meaning, they can help us experience a life filled with passion and personal fulfillment. Lack of understanding around our true intentions often causes frustration and confusion, which is one reason people oftentimes do not achieve their goals. Many goals are written; however, they are not established with honest intent. It’s time to get brutally honest about your true intentions so you can achieve authentic goals.
Intentions have the power to strengthen your Inner Leader and move forward in a meaningful way as long as they represent …

Influence Of Age And Gender On The Emotional Intelligence Of Managers, L. K. Singh, Ruchi Srivastava
Influence Of Age And Gender On The Emotional Intelligence Of Managers, L. K. Singh, Ruchi Srivastava
Business Review
Organizations are made up of people and function through people. Without people organizations cannot exist. The resources of men, money, materials and machines are collected, coordinated and utilized through people. Therefore, we can say that people are the most significant resource of any organization. However globalization has brought in more competition. Now the organizations are on a race to become the market leader and there is high competition for survival. All these factors have brought the employees under fear, sense of insecurity and high stress due to which they become nervous, chronically worried, depressed and emotionally instable. They are easily …
How Faith And Leadership Are Connected: A Study Of Catholic Women Administrators In A Southern Public Institution Of Higher Education, Mary Blanchard Wallace
How Faith And Leadership Are Connected: A Study Of Catholic Women Administrators In A Southern Public Institution Of Higher Education, Mary Blanchard Wallace
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Studies concerning spirituality and higher education, particularly for the college student, are beginning to appear in journals, conference papers, and presentations. However, there is little research conducted with professionals in higher education on the construct of spirituality. Spirituality has so many different definitions in the literature, it is difficult to define, and perhaps even more complex to study academically. Using a research-based conceptual model for religious faith, developed within the study of family sciences, this study examines the lived experience of how and why Catholic women administrators connect their faith and leadership in a setting of public institutions of higher …
The Use Of Discrete Computer Simulation Modeling To Estimate The Direct And Diffusion Effects Of Leadership Development Intervention On The Return On Investment, Brett Wayne Richard
The Use Of Discrete Computer Simulation Modeling To Estimate The Direct And Diffusion Effects Of Leadership Development Intervention On The Return On Investment, Brett Wayne Richard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Organizational leaders seek monetary returns on their investments (ROI). Thus, making decisions to invest in human capital, such as in leadership development interventions, are often difficult due to the lack of research demonstrating monetary returns on development investment (RODI). Further, little research has been conducted on the diffusion effects of leadership development intervention, or returns on leadership diffusion (ROLD). This research expands on previous research conducted by Avolio, Avey & Quinsenberry (2010), which was the first attempt to estimate RODI using utility analysis. This study is unique in that it uses computer simulation modeling along with current research data to …

Facilitating Emergence: Complex, Adaptive Systems Theory And The Shape Of Change, Peter Martin Dickens
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This study used Principal Component Analysis to examine factors that facilitate emergent change in an organization. As organizational life becomes more complex, today’s dominant management paradigms no longer suffice. This is particularly true in a health care setting where multiple sources of disease interacting with each other meet with often-competing organizational priorities and accountabilities in a highly complex world. This study identifies new ways of approaching complexity by embracing the capacity of complex systems to find their own form of order and coherence. Based on a review of the literature, interviews with hospital CEOs, and my organization development practice experience …
Role Of Foundations In The Changing World Of Philanthropy: A Houston Perspective, Ronnie Hagerty
Role Of Foundations In The Changing World Of Philanthropy: A Houston Perspective, Ronnie Hagerty
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
From the earliest days of the American nation, philanthropy has had a defining role in leading change. Philanthropy has provided vision and voice for nascent social movements ranging from civil rights and the women’s movement to AIDS research and environmentalism. As the 21st century has moved into its second decade, philanthropy finds itself facing significant pressures that threaten to compromise its ability to innovate and advocate for issues and individuals whose voices cannot be heard over the public rhetoric of the day. Once perceived as the purview of the rich and well connected, modern philanthropy cuts across social, economic, and …
Millennial Integration: Challenges Millennials Face In The Workplace And What They Can Do About Them, Chip Espinoza
Millennial Integration: Challenges Millennials Face In The Workplace And What They Can Do About Them, Chip Espinoza
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
There is a monumental changing of the guard that is currently taking place in organizations due to demographic metabolism. One of the largest birth cohorts or generations in history (Baby Boomer) is beginning to retire while their predecessor (Builder) is almost completely out of the workforce. Gen X is hitting stride and on the cusp of inheriting the proverbial organizational mantle. The three aforementioned age cohorts have learned to play in the organizational sandbox together. However, a new age cohort (Millennial, a.k.a. Gen Y), equal or greater in size to the Baby Boomer cohort started entering the playground approximately ten …

Museums, Leadership, And Transfer: An Inquiry Into Organizational Supports For Learning Leadership, Julie I. Johnson
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Given the rapid changes that 21st century museums must manage, flexible thinking about leadership forms and purposes is needed. Today's complex leadership landscape necessitates that staff engage in enacting leadership with positional leaders. Limited empirical literature exists that describes how the next generation of museum leaders is being nurtured and developed. The purpose of this study was to: describe museum professionals' perceptions of leadership practices; investigate museums as sites of organizational and leadership learning; and consider the experiences of museum professionals who have participated in leader development programs. The study involved an on-line survey with 310 professionals working in U.S. …

Through The Eyes Of The Family: A Collective Case Study Of Family Business Consulting, Cynthia L. Waisner
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Interest in family businesses has increased over the last 50 years. Little empirical research, however, has been devoted specifically to the study of family business consulting. Various practitioners have offered their insights regarding approaches and tools, and a few empirical studies have offered the practitioners’ viewpoints regarding the practice area. The purpose of this study was to add to this small body of research by providing a view of family business consulting through the lens of the family business member. The chosen method of inquiry was collective case study, to allow for both contextual understanding and cross-case comparison. A total …

Downsized Survivors: Areas Of Loss And Work Behaviors, Cyndi J. Schaeffer
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This research design used factor analysis to develop subscales related to areas of loss, and subscales related to work behaviors of survivors following a downsizing. Five loss subscales were revealed as a result of factor analysis. They were loss of sense of justice and supervisory support; loss of security and support; loss of positive outlook; loss of territory; and loss of control and identity. There were two work behavior components identified through factor analysis. They were lack of productivity and sabotage; and intention for flight. The loss components, sense of justice and supervisory support; security and competence; and territory, were …

The Tangled Web: How Nonprofit Board Members Experience Organizational Crisis, Elizabeth A. Valicenti
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The purpose of this grounded theory study was to develop an understanding of what board members experience during a time of organizational crisis. Major corporate and nonprofit failures of previously successful organizations in recent years have raised questions and led to speculation about the role of boards of directors through the crises. In this study twenty board members of nonprofit organizations who had experienced an organizational crisis during their board service were interviewed. Participants were asked to share their perceptions and explore how they identified and made meaning of the events and board processes that went on as the crisis …
Leading Deeply: A Heroic Journey Toward Wisdom And Transformation, Richard Warm
Leading Deeply: A Heroic Journey Toward Wisdom And Transformation, Richard Warm
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This dissertation will explore leadership as a mytho-poetic transformational journey toward self-knowledge, authenticity, and ultimately wisdom; the power to make meaning and give something back to the world in which we live; and the necessity of transformation. I view leadership as a transformative process and a transformational responsibility. As leaders we must undergo our own transformation in order to lead change on a larger scale. The dissertation will be both philosophical and theoretical, exploring how the threads of the hero’s journey, transformation, wisdom, and leadership intertwine. It will also examine the role of education in this process. Education does not …

"Time To Lead" Motives-Attributes-Skills Knowledge (Mask) Base In Leadership Performance, Chris D. Bellamy
"Time To Lead" Motives-Attributes-Skills Knowledge (Mask) Base In Leadership Performance, Chris D. Bellamy
Dr. Chris D. Bellamy
In today’s business environment, executives are seeking ways to identify new leaders which are well rounded in terms of their motivations, attributes, skills, knowledge and abilities to manage people. Companies invest in skill development of existing managers and often in potential managers. The Motivations-Attributes-Skills-Knowledge (MASK) model establishes the framework for baselining leadership behaviors and competencies for assessment and measurement verses a subjective annual performance evaluation. The model establishes behavior patterns that can be used to quantify and qualify as predictors of present and future leadership performance. This model is the standard by which business leaders can use to significantly improve …

Future Trends In Strategic Management, Chris D. Bellamy
Dr. Chris D. Bellamy
In today’s business environment the top down approach to management has fundamentally disappeared. Baby boomers, gen x and gen y managers bring different management styles and thinking to global organizations. This paper identifies eight current research articles (published within the past five years) that synthesize and apply four trends in strategic management that are crucial for the field in the future. The four trends are ranked 1-4, with 1 being most important. The ranking are justified.
