An Application Of The Deming Management Method For Information Technology Projects, Jack T. Marchewka
An Application Of The Deming Management Method For Information Technology Projects, Jack T. Marchewka
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Although the ideas and teachings of W. Edwards Deming have been implemented in organizations world- wide for over the past 50 years, only three studies have empirically tested a theoretical model grounded in the Deming Management Method. These studies focused on the manufacturing and services area. Today, quality management continues to be an area of interest both in project management and software engineering. The focus of this study is to test the Deming Management Method in information technology (IT) projects. A survey of 63 IT professionals provides empirical support for the Deming Management Method and its application to IT projects. …

Project Management Practices In The Information Technology Departments Of Various Size Institutions Of Higher Education, Charles R. Johnston, David C. Wierschem
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
The demand for information technology at institutions of higher education is increasing at a rapid pace. It is fueled by student, faculty, and administrative needs. This paper examines project management practices at these institutions with respect to the sizes of the institutions. Survey results indicate an emphasis on operational concerns at small and medium size institutions when selecting IT projects. The prominence of the role of project manager and adoption of formal PM tools/techniques by IT departments generally increase with the sizes of the institutions. The importance of having a project plan is recognized by all sizes of institutions of …

Sensemaking And The Management Of Older Volunteers, Megan Paull
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study explores the experiences of older volunteers and their managers in particular when a change in the perfonnance of the volunteer is noticed by the manager. The impetus for this study was an expressed concern of the managers of volunteers which classified the management of 'older volunteers" as being somehow different from their younger counterparts. Conducted within an interpretivist framework this study employed a two-phase methodology comprising a context setting descriptive quantitative study followed by an in-depth qualitative grounded theory approach. The importance of the in-depth examination revealed the importance of context to the management process.
The Case For Including Study Of Arts In Management Development Curricula, Humayun S. Ansari
The Case For Including Study Of Arts In Management Development Curricula, Humayun S. Ansari
Business Review
Proliferation of business schools and institutes providing business education have resulted in the creation of a vast pool of trained manpower which has little avenues to explore for getting gainful employment. Therefore, we have to discover new avenues, which do not require direct foreign investment for creating employment and adding value to our indigenous intellectual property owners. The thesis of this paper is that the induction of the study of fine arts in business education curricula can help forge a common ground between the two cultures (Arts and Business) and to develop projects that are cooperative and mutually beneficial. This …
Global Competition’S Perfect Storm: Why Business And Labor Cannot Solve Their Problems Alone, Denise M. Rousseau, Rosemary Batt
Global Competition’S Perfect Storm: Why Business And Labor Cannot Solve Their Problems Alone, Denise M. Rousseau, Rosemary Batt
Rosemary Batt
A perfect storm is a conjoining of forces that intensifies effects. This commentary addresses the economic perfect storm that the United States and many other developed countries face as they attempt to become globally competitive. Its forces conflate strategic change with the erosion of employment and income security as firms shed labor and old institutional arrangements, in turn degrading quality of work and family life for workers as well as the futures of retirees. We evaluate the responses of our commentators—Louis Uchitelle, J.T. Battenberg III, and Thomas Kochan—who assess the current crisis and possible solutions to it. Their responses and …
