Assessors' Use Of Personality Traits In Descriptions Of Assessment Centre Candidates: A Five-Factor Model Perspective, Filip Lievens, Filip De Fruyt, Karen Van Dam Dec 2001

Assessors' Use Of Personality Traits In Descriptions Of Assessment Centre Candidates: A Five-Factor Model Perspective, Filip Lievens, Filip De Fruyt, Karen Van Dam

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In assessment centres assessors are typically taught to note down behavioural observations. However, previous studies have shown that about 20% of assessor notes contain trait descriptors. Instead of regarding these descriptors as errors, this study examines their position in a personality descriptive taxonomy (i.e. the AB5C taxonomy, see Hofstee, De Raad, & Goldberg, 1992) and relates them to employment recommendations. To this end, assessor notes of 403 assessees (214 men, 189 women; mean age 33 years) were scrutinized for personality descriptors. Results show that assessors, as a group, use descriptors referring to all five personality domains with a preference for …

Thanksgiving And Football, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

(As with all American traditions if it happened once or twice it is one. Therefore I present my traditional Thanksgiving piece) The History of Thanksgiving and of Football both go back into the Middle Ages, and so it may not be so strange that the two would become intertwined in modern America.

Mark Mcgwire Leaves The Game: His Legacy, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 2001

Mark Mcgwire Leaves The Game: His Legacy, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Mark McGwire has retired. He will be best remembered as the man who broke Roger Maris' single season home run record. He will be remembered in tandem with Sammy Sosa for that wonderful season of 1998 when the two of them chased Roger Maris across the sands of time and then both caught him. He will be remembered for the wonderful scene as he broke Maris' record. He will be remembered as one of the "Bash Brothers" who, along with Jose Canseco, redefined the term "long ball" and became a "murderer's row" of two.

When asked if it was a sad day for baseball when it was announced that two major league baseball teams would be eliminated within the next few weeks, Bud Selig, Baseball's Wizard of Oz, said "no." What did you expect from the man who cancelled the World Series?

Patriotism Post 9/11 And Contraction, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 2001

Patriotism Post 9/11 And Contraction, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Now back in the country among My Fellow Americans, but still wandering the highways and byways, I watch with some interest the spectacle of the baseball playoffs and the World Series in the new Post-9/11 World. I am struck by the intensity of the patriotic pageantry prior to each game. The often beautiful and moving singing of the National Anthem; the excessive displays of the red, white and blue; President Bush throwing out the first ball at the World Series; all conspire to mark these events as great moments of communal remembrance and/or celebration.

The Late But Still Great World Series: Bob Brenly Is Blessed At The Bob, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

In many ways this unpredictable World Series was highly predictable, in other ways it was one of the wildest crapshoots in recent history. It was also one of the best World Series ever, rivaling the 1991 Twins-Braves in my memory bank.

Beggar-Thy-Neighbor Advertising: Theory And Application To Generic Commodity Promotion Programs, Jennifer S. James, Julian M. Alston, John W. Freebairn

Agribusiness

Profits from generic advertising by a producer group often come partly at the expense of producers of closely related commodities. The resulting tendency toward excessive advertising is exacerbated by check-off funding. To analyze this beggar-thy-neighbor behavior we compare a scenario where different producer groups cooperate and choose their advertising expenditures jointly to maximize the sum of profits across the groups, and a scenario where they optimize independently. In an illustrative example using 1998 data for U.S. beef and pork, the noncooperatively chosen expenditure on beef and pork advertising is more than three times the cooperative optimum.

Evolution Of Global Airline Strategic Alliance And Consolidation In The Twenty-First Century, Terence P. C. Fan, Laurence Vigeant-Langlois, Christine Geissler, Björn Bosler, Jan Wilmking Nov 2001

Evolution Of Global Airline Strategic Alliance And Consolidation In The Twenty-First Century, Terence P. C. Fan, Laurence Vigeant-Langlois, Christine Geissler, Björn Bosler, Jan Wilmking

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Global airline strategic alliances have emerged since the late 1980s, and their number has slowly risen through the years. Will the number of such alliances continue to proliferate? Or will airlines consolidate with one another to form mega-carriers? In this paper, the likelihood of various airline consolidation and alliance development possibilities was examined based on a number of high-level trends and forces. The most probable near-term industry alliance and consolidation structure is described, accompanied with a probable path of evolution. These predictions have important implications for managers of strategic alliances, carriers who are currently in an alliance as well as …

Policy brief from Community Resources For Justice

Ask anyone on the street about it and you are liable to be drawn into a lengthy conversation about, the troublesome state of housing in Urban America – high prices, low availability, and, seemingly, no relief in sight. Whether you are a student or senior citizen, construction worker or downtown professional, the search for housing in an urban center is a difficult but necessary experience.

The Canadian Sports Scene Dominated By Hockey - Baseball A Footnote, Richard C. Crepeau Oct 2001

The Canadian Sports Scene Dominated By Hockey - Baseball A Footnote, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Last Thursday morning I was awakened by a voice with a slightly different accent reciting the score of every hockey game that had taken place in Canada the previous night. Clearly there are more hockey teams than gas stations in Canada. As usual the CBC announcer told me the major league baseball scores only from the games involving Montreal and Toronto, no others. There was one concession as the Barry Bonds watch was mentioned.

Pursuing Environmental Justice Through The Courts: An Overview Of The Process And Why It Has Failed, Julie Lynne Hershenberg Oct 2001

Pursuing Environmental Justice Through The Courts: An Overview Of The Process And Why It Has Failed, Julie Lynne Hershenberg

IPED Technical Reports

This project brought together two issues that dominate policy debates in the southwestern U.S. and especially along the United States – Mexico Border; namely, environmental justice, and legal liabilities associated with adverse environmental actions. Both are major implementation problems. In the southwest the issue becomes more problematic as the two-nations meet face-to-face, and the maquiladora industry continues to expand, creating new burdens on an already stressed environment as a result of industrial practices that have not always meet U.S. environmental standards.

Determination Of The Impact Of A Human Capital Decision Cost Model On The Economic Performance Measures Of A Technical Services Company, Jeffery A. Temple Oct 2001

Determination Of The Impact Of A Human Capital Decision Cost Model On The Economic Performance Measures Of A Technical Services Company, Jeffery A. Temple

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Human Capital has a major impact on cash flow management decisions in a Technical Services company. Decisions to hire or terminate employees to meet contract requirements affect the company's economic value. The objective of this research is to develop a model that assists management in establishing a starting point in making, as efficiently as possible, those decisions that impact employees' lives. To understand that impact, the operations and economic parameters of a Technical Services company are compared with those of a manufacturing company. This analysis establishes two · essential points for Technical Services organizations; first, that the capital investment decision …

This is Old Dominion University's second annual "State of the Region" Report. While it represents the work of many individuals connected in various ways to the university, the Report does not constitute an "official" viewpoint of the University, or it's president, Dr. Roseann Runte.

This year's Report was produced with the goal of making Hampton Roads an even better place to live. Those who know and love the region of Hampton Roads frequently boast of its numerous strengths and successes, but we do so with the understanding that it would be possible for us to improve the region's performance in …

Sport Commemorates 9/11, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

If there was any doubt about the significance of sport in American life this past weekend should put those doubts to rest. The events of Friday night in New York at Shea Stadium alone were a reminder of just how sport can bring a community together, sometimes to celebrate and sometimes to mourn. In this case to do both.

Sport In Time Of National Crisis Or Disaster, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

One week ago at about this time sitting in the mountains of North Carolina doing some writing and listening to classical music on the radio, I was distracted by a special news bulletin. The announcer said there had been what appeared to be an attack on the World Trade Center in New York. I quickly moved to turn on the television and was struck by a sense of total disbelief at what I saw.

Bank Lending Behaviour And Output Growth: An Empirical Analysis With Implication For Monetary Policy Formulation In Nigeria, Joseph O. Nnanna Sep 2001

Bank Lending Behaviour And Output Growth: An Empirical Analysis With Implication For Monetary Policy Formulation In Nigeria, Joseph O. Nnanna

Economic and Financial Review

Preliminary findings from the empirical analysis show that the banking sector has not supported real sector output growth in its lending policy. The combined effects of risk aversion and infrastructural problem in the real sector represent serious constraints on credit flow to the private sector and the sectors declining marginal product of capital. Overall, while the banking sector has indeed, succeeded in deposit mobilization, it has nevertheless, not done a good job in its intermediation functions. The analysis further reveals the presence of policy distortions in the system, and its negative influence on banks' lending behavior. The need to address …
