Local Economic Risk Factors On The Primary And Secondary Mortgage Markets, Brent W. Ambrose, Anthony Pennington-Cross Dec 2000

Local Economic Risk Factors On The Primary And Secondary Mortgage Markets, Brent W. Ambrose, Anthony Pennington-Cross

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

This paper presents a cross-sectional analysis of the spatial distribution of loans in the primary and secondary mortgage markets. Aggregating loan originations to the MSA level, we examine the proportion of the market served by FHA and conventional lenders. We model the geographic differences in market shares as a function of supply, demand, and economic risk factors. Results indicate that FHA market shares are higher in cities with higher economic risk characteristics. To examine the role of GSE activity, we model the spatial distribution of the disposition of conventional loans. Again, we focus on the impact of local economic risk …

An Application Of Rule-Based Forecasting To A Situation Lacking Domain Knowledge, Monica Adya, J. Scott Armstrong, Fred Collopy, Miles Kennedy Oct 2000

An Application Of Rule-Based Forecasting To A Situation Lacking Domain Knowledge, Monica Adya, J. Scott Armstrong, Fred Collopy, Miles Kennedy

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Rule-based forecasting (RBF) uses rules to combine forecasts from simple extrapolation methods. Weights for combining the rules use statistical and domain-based features of time series. RBF was originally developed, tested, and validated only on annual data. For the M3-Competition, three major modifications were made to RBF. First, due to the absence of much in the way of domain knowledge, we prepared the forecasts under the assumption that no domain knowledge was available. This removes what we believe is one of RBF's primary advantages. We had to re-calibrate some of the rules relating to causal forces to allow for this lack …

Cancer Surveillance Using Data Warehousing, Data Mining, And Decision Support Systems, Guisseppi A. Forgionne, Aryya Gangopadhyay, Monica Adya

Management Faculty Research and Publications

This article discusses how data warehousing, data mining, and decision support systems can reduce the national cancer burden or the oral complications of cancer therapies, especially as related to oral and pharyngeal cancers. An information system is presented that will deliver the necessary information technology to clinical, administrative, and policy researchers and analysts in an effective and efficient manner. The system will deliver the technology and knowledge that users need to readily: (1) organize relevant claims data, (2) detect cancer patterns in general and special populations, (3) formulate models that explain the patterns, and (4) evaluate the efficacy of specified …

Ethics And The Accountants’ Code Of Conduct, Michael D. Akers, Don Giacomino Jul 2000

Ethics And The Accountants’ Code Of Conduct, Michael D. Akers, Don Giacomino

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

Although the AICPA has established the Professional Code of Conduct to deal with the behavior of CPAs, research has also shown that an individual's behavior is affected by his or her personal values. While there has been considerable research of the ethical behavior of business professionals and business students, there has been limited research of the personal values of public accountants. This study was designed to examine the values and value types underlie the ethics of Big Six public accountants. A survey instrument, consisting of 56 values, developed and validated by Schwartz was administered to audit and tax professionals at …

Multi-Period Capacity Expansion In Globally Dispersed Regions, Siddhartha Syam Mar 2000

Multi-Period Capacity Expansion In Globally Dispersed Regions, Siddhartha Syam

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Multiperiod capacitated location (MCL) models specify where and when capacity expansions should be made, and how large they should be. The MCL model developed in this paper incorporates a shift from manufacturing for overseas markets to manufacturing in overseas markets. While MCL models generally have not provided lower bounds on the optimal solution, the methodology of this paper provides both upper and lower bounds. Computational results are given for problems involving up to 200 locations/destinations and 10-year planning horizons. Near-optimal solutions are provided in reasonable computing times with average convergence less than 2%. Representative variations in cost between regions are …

Weight Discrimination: A Multidisciplinary Analysis, Cheryl Maranto, Ann Fraedrich Stenoien Mar 2000

Weight Discrimination: A Multidisciplinary Analysis, Cheryl Maranto, Ann Fraedrich Stenoien

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Protection against obesity discrimination is extremely limited under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). No obese plaintiff has won using the actual disability theory, but a few have won under the perceived disability theory. Weight-related appearance standards are legal. We estimate weight-based wage penalties for young men and women. We find that mildly obese (20% over standard weight) white women experience greater wage penalties than black men experience for weight that is 100% over standard weight. Men do not experience wage penalties until their weight exceeds standard weight by over 100 lb. A gender-plus analysis under Title VII is more …

The Federal Housing Administration In The New Millennium, Anthony Pennington-Cross, Anthony Yezer Jan 2000

The Federal Housing Administration In The New Millennium, Anthony Pennington-Cross, Anthony Yezer

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

The first challenge in attempting to predict the future of the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) is to understand why it is still here. No other depression-era mortgage-market institution has survived without substantial modification. We conclude that its survival has depended on its ability to invent new purposes for itself. For example, it changed from a replacement for failed private mortgage insurance using economic soundness as an insurance criterion to an innovator in high-risk lending based on an acceptable risk criterion. FHA has developed special programs to serve the needs of specific groups. We believe this pattern of change in purposes …

Are Some Comparative Nutrition Claims Misleading? The Role Of Nutrition Knowledge, Ad Claim Type And Disclosure Conditions, J. Craig Andrews, Scot Burton, Richard G. Netemeyer Jan 2000

Are Some Comparative Nutrition Claims Misleading? The Role Of Nutrition Knowledge, Ad Claim Type And Disclosure Conditions, J. Craig Andrews, Scot Burton, Richard G. Netemeyer

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

As the regulator of all national food advertising, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has expressed concern that consumers may be misled by certain comparative nutrient content claims in advertising. To help examine this issue, primary food shoppers were recruited and interviewed in three U.S. markets according to generally accepted procedures for advertising copy tests. The study employs a 2 (ad claim type) x 2 (nutrition knowledge) x 4 (disclosure type) between-subjects design using manipulated print advertisements. Misleading generalizations for absolute levels of sodium content beyond that of control ads are found for both specific and general nutrient content claims from …

Nutrition Ad Claims And Disclosures: Interaction And Mediation Effects For Consumer Evaluations Of The Brand And The Ad, Scot Burton, J. Craig Andrews, Richard G. Netemeyer Jan 2000

Nutrition Ad Claims And Disclosures: Interaction And Mediation Effects For Consumer Evaluations Of The Brand And The Ad, Scot Burton, J. Craig Andrews, Richard G. Netemeyer

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

The effects of ad disclosure information on evaluations of the brand, the advertisement, and purchase intentions are postulated to vary across different ad claim types. In addition, consumers' product health perceptions are hypothesized to mediate the effects of the disclosure information and ad claim type on brand and ad-related evaluations. Results from a between subjects' experiment show that the health perception measure mediates the effect of the disclosure on brand and ad evaluations, but the interaction between the ad claim type and the disclosure is not mediated by the inclusion in the model of consumers' product health perceptions.

It was found that service recovery methods such as claims handling, problem handling and complaint handling are associated with the level of satisfaction of customers. In addition, interfacing departments also have varying association with levels of satisfaction of customers. Finds that users of these services can identify problems they experience with ocean freight shipping services, and this may impact their choice of most …

Multidimensionality Of Entrepreneurial Firm-Level Processes: Do The Dimensions Covary?, Phil E. Stetz, Roy Howell, Alex Stewart, John D. Blair, Myron D. Fottler Jan 2000

Multidimensionality Of Entrepreneurial Firm-Level Processes: Do The Dimensions Covary?, Phil E. Stetz, Roy Howell, Alex Stewart, John D. Blair, Myron D. Fottler

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Covariance (or not) among the first-order dimensions of firm-level entrepreneurial processes underpins a fundamental and non-trivial difference between the entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial posture constructs. Utilizing a typology developed for multi-dimensional constructs, we operationalized each construct according to its specific conceptualization (relationships among the dimensions) and compared and contrasted each construct in an identical nomological network. Although we found support for both theories, the entrepreneurial orientation construct was more robust in explaining additional variance in growth. Additionally, our findings suggest that the means through which the first-order dimensions are operationalized—latent vs. summates— significantly affect the analysis.

Bringing Acquisition Reform Into Focus, Steve G. Green, David R. King, Neal J. Rappaport Jan 2000

Bringing Acquisition Reform Into Focus, Steve G. Green, David R. King, Neal J. Rappaport

Management Faculty Research and Publications

The response of our defense industrial base to major changes, such as the collapse of the former Soviet Union, emphasize the need to continue to improve the way the United States buys weapon systems. By looking through a historical lens, this paper addresses predicting the long-term success of acquisition practices and reform initiatives for the cost community. A literature review identifies acquisition reform legislation and initiatives since World War II. Looking at past acquisition reform and their long term impacts leads to the conclusion that acquisition reform efforts must be viewed skeptically. Given a dynamic environment, estimating costs may actually …

An Analysis Of Using Expert Systems And Intelligent Agents For The Virtual Library Project At The Naval Surface Warfare Center-Carderock Division, J. Liebowitz, Monica Adya Jan 2000

An Analysis Of Using Expert Systems And Intelligent Agents For The Virtual Library Project At The Naval Surface Warfare Center-Carderock Division, J. Liebowitz, Monica Adya

Management Faculty Research and Publications

The Virtual Library Project1 at the Naval Surface Warfare Center/Carderock Division (NSWC/CD) is being developed to facilitate the incorporation and use of library documents via the Internet. These documents typically relate to the design and manufacture of ships for the U.S. Navy Fleet. As such, the libraries will store documents that contain not only text but also images, graphs and design configurations. Because of the dynamic nature of digital documents, particularly those related to design, rapid and effective cataloging of these documents becomes challenging. We conducted a research study to analyze the use of expert systems and intelligent agents to …

Corrections To Rule-Based Forecasting: Findings From A Replication, Monica Adya Jan 2000

Corrections To Rule-Based Forecasting: Findings From A Replication, Monica Adya

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Rule-Based Forecasting (RBF) is an expert system that combines forecasts from simple extrapolation methods based on features of time series. In this study, we provide corrections to ten of the 99 rules contained in RBF. These corrections were identified during a replication of RBF. Empirical comparisons indicate that the corrections did not lead to a noticeable improvement in accuracy when tested against some of the original data. However, in light of the fact that several studies are extending the work on RBF, it is important to report on these corrections to RBF.

The Distributed User Modeling Shell System (Dumss): A Conceptual Framework For Eliciting User Models, Thawatchai Piyawat, Monica Adya, Anthony F. Norcio Jan 2000

The Distributed User Modeling Shell System (Dumss): A Conceptual Framework For Eliciting User Models, Thawatchai Piyawat, Monica Adya, Anthony F. Norcio

Management Faculty Research and Publications

With the advances in communication technology, large volumes of information can transfer across continents within a fraction of a second. Nevertheless, computer users still suffer from unpleasant situations when they interact with systems and are required to adapt to systems rather than the other way round. User modeling aims to overcome this problem by enabling computer systems to interact with users according to the users’ models, i.e., goals, knowledge, and preferences of users. Although, user modeling has shown invaluable benefits, methods of capturing user information to build precise and useful user models are still in their early states. This paper …

A Decision Technology System To Advance The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Breast Cancer, Guisseppi A. Forgionne, Aryya Gangopadhyay, Monica Adya Jan 2000

A Decision Technology System To Advance The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Breast Cancer, Guisseppi A. Forgionne, Aryya Gangopadhyay, Monica Adya

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Geographical variations in cancer rates have been observed for decades. Described spatial patterns and trends have provided clues for generating hypotheses about the etiology of cancer. For breast cancer, investigators have demonstrated that some variation can be explained by differences in the population distribution of known breast cancer risk factors such as menstrual and reproductive variables (Laden, Spiegelman, and Neas, 1997; Robbins, Bescianini, and Kelsey, 1997; Sturgeon, Schairer, and Gail, 1995). However, regional patterns also may reflect the effects of Workshop on Hormones, Hormone Metabolism, Environment, and Breast Cancer (1995): (a) environmental hazards (such as air and water pollution), (b) …

Data Mining In Health-Care: Issues And A Research Agenda, Monica Adya Jan 2000

Data Mining In Health-Care: Issues And A Research Agenda, Monica Adya

Management Faculty Research and Publications

While data mining has become a much-lauded tool in business and related fields, its role in the healthcare arena is still being explored. Currently, most applications of data mining in healthcare can be categorized into two areas: decision support for clinical practice, and policy planning/decision making. However, it is challenging to find empirical literature in this area since a substantial amount of existing work in data mining for health care is conceptual in nature. In this paper, we review the challenges that limit the progress made in this area and present considerations for the future of data mining in healthcare.

Student Withdrawal: Test Of An Integrated Model, Gary A. Adams, Ron Marks, Jeff Allen Jan 2000

Student Withdrawal: Test Of An Integrated Model, Gary A. Adams, Ron Marks, Jeff Allen

Management Faculty Research and Publications

This study examined a model of student withdrawal that integrated the major elements of Tinto's (1975) Student Integration Model and Bean's (1982, 1983) Industrial Model of Student Attrition. In a sample of 315 college freshman, the results of a path analysis indicated that both social and academic integration were related to satisfaction but only academic integration was related to commitment. Neither social nor academic integration had significant direct effects on intention to withdraw. Further, of the two attitudinal variables, satisfaction was related to intention to withdraw, however, commitment was not. These findings support the integrated model of student withdrawal.
