Ict Implementation Barriers And Organizational Issues In Islamic-Based Higher Education Institution: The Case Of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (Uin) Jakarta, Muhammad Qomarul Huda, Husnyati Hussin
mqomarul@gmail.com
Nowadays, most Higher Education Institutions (HEI) rely on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for all aspects of their activities such as administration, teaching, learning and research services. Even though the adoption of ICT in higher education has been extensive since mid 1990s, it has failed to produce the radical changes in learning and teaching. While many studies have been conducted on ICT usage in higher education especially in the developed countries, similar studies in the context of Islamic-based higher education institution (IHEI) are scarce. IHEI are unique institutions because its mission and vision are based on Islamic teachings and values. …

The Ethics Of Tax Evasion: A Quantitative Study Of French Bba Students, Dylan Kissane, Yuriy Barabantsev
Dylan Kissane
The subject of ethical action in business has taken on special significance in recent years. With the business world rocked by ethical lapses and associated scandals at Enron, WorldCom and Tyco in the early part of the decade and then, in a time of global financial crisis, stunned again by multi-billion dollar frauds such as that at Société Générale, there is a new push to study the ethical and unethical behaviour of business people and future business people. While business schools have long been lauded for their preparation of students for the rigours of the world of business, finance and …

Building The Cross-Culture Communication Model In The Multinational Companies Is Necessary As The Second Step, Yan Liang
Yan LIANG
As soon as the right attitude on new culture has been founded, how we can do to make one well understood by the other in the cross-cultural environment? The most effective method is to build the bridges in various levels and various forms so that the employees are able to express their own opinion freely and conveniently.

Reflecting On Providing Multiple Assignment Supports To First-Year Marketing Students In A Large Class, Venkata Yanamandram, S. Lambert
Sarah Lambert
This paper describes improvements in learning outcomes in a large undergraduate marketing class at the University of Wollongong. The authors reflect on the interventions developed and evaluated, aimed at supporting students in their transition from novice researchers into self-regulated researchers, and producing professional marketing reports in industry recognised report writing genres. The project, and therefore the paper, was focussed on the major assignment and the initial and ongoing supports provided to students. These have been developed through a continuous cycle of improvement – planned, developed in partnership with a central resource development unit, deployed using a website and classroom activities, …
The Effect Of Taxes On Multinational Debt Location, Matteo Arena, Andrew Roper
The Effect Of Taxes On Multinational Debt Location, Matteo Arena, Andrew Roper
Matteo P. Arena
We provide new evidence that differences in international tax rates and tax regimes affect multinational firms' debt location decisions. Our sample contains 8287 debt issues from 2437 firms headquartered in 23 different countries with debt-issuing subsidiaries in 59 countries. We analyze firms' marginal decisions of where to issue debt to investigate the influence of a comprehensive set of tax-related effects, including differences in personal and corporate tax rates, tax credit and exemption systems, and bi-lateral cross-country withholding taxes on interest and dividend payments. Our results show that differences in personal and corporate tax rates, the presence of dividend imputation or …

The Impact Of Bank Mergers On Liquidity Creation, Elisabeta Pana, Jin Park, Tim Query
Elisabeta Pana
Using 189 commercial bank mergers between 1997 and 2004, we document a positive impact of the merger activity on bank liquidity creation. Consistent with the deposit insurance hypothesis, we find that banks with higher levels of deposit insurance create higher levels of liquidity around mergers. Furthermore, we document that the level of equity capital explains the change in liquidity creation around mergers for the sample of large acquirers. We show that for the sample of small acquirers there is a negative relationship between the level of economic growth and changes in liquidity creation around mergers.

Liability For Misstatement In Prospectus In India: Where To Stop?, Manendra Singh
Manendra Singh, Solicitor & Advocate, India (Mumbai)
The article is intended to highlight the securities law and deals with the liability for misstatement in prospectus. It helps in identifying people who could be held liable and to what extent the liability extends. It also provides an insight for the defences available to an accused. The article basically deals with the Indian law but also touches upon the necessary issues under USA and UK law and thus helps in drawing a comparison between these countries' laws for the same.

Information Systems Research (Wirtschaftsinformatik) basically follows two research approaches: the behavioristic approach and the design-oriented approach. In this memorandum, 10 authors propose principles of design-oriented information systems research. Moreover, the memorandum is supported by 111 full professors from the German-speaking scientific community, who with their signature advocate the principles specified therein.

Modeling Longitudinal Data Using A Pair-Copula Decomposition Of Serial Dependence, Michael S. Smith, Aleksey Min, Carlos Almeida, Claudia Czado
Michael Stanley Smith
Copulas have proven to be very successful tools for the flexible modelling of cross-sectional dependence. In this paper we express the dependence structure of continuous-valued time series data using a sequence of bivariate copulas. This corresponds to a type of decomposition recently called a ‘vine’ in the graphical models literature, where each copula is entitled a ‘pair-copula’. We propose a Bayesian approach for the estimation of this dependence structure for longitudinal data. Bayesian selection ideas are used to identify any independence pair-copulas, with the end result being a parsimonious representation of a time-inhomogeneous Markov process of varying order. Estimates are …
Measuring Bad Leadership In Organisations, James Shaw, Anthony Erickson
Measuring Bad Leadership In Organisations, James Shaw, Anthony Erickson
James B Shaw
This study describes the development of a measure of the nature of bad leadership in organisations. We then use scales developed from that measure in cluster analysis to empirically derive a taxonomy of bad leaders. Data were obtained through a web-based survey that generated 717 respondents. Based on follower perceptions, the results identified seven types of bad leaders based on behaviour-focused scales and seven types of bad leaders identified were not "all bad" but rather perceived as extreme on just one or two characteristics.

International Labor Rights And The Sovereignty Question: Nafta And Guatemala, Two Case Studies, Lance A. Compa
International Labor Rights And The Sovereignty Question: Nafta And Guatemala, Two Case Studies, Lance A. Compa
Lance A Compa
[Excerpt] Labor rights advocates in the United States and allied organizations abroad attempting to establish international fair labor standards run up against traditional notions of sovereignty in formulating national labor policies and development strategies. In the same way that entrenched sovereignty principles gradually yielded to international human rights claims after World War E, sovereignty is now being challenged by claims of international laborrights in the field of employment standards and industrial relations. This Article seeks to illuminate this challenge to sovereignty in two case studies of labor rights advocacy. Part I sets the stage with an overview of the growing …

A Strange Case, Lance A. Compa
Lance A Compa
[Excerpt] The disconnect reflected in Bosch's action at the Wisconsin plant between promise and performance is the theme of a new Human Rights Watch report titled A Strange Case: Violations of Workers' Freedom of Association in the United States by European Multinational Corporations. The report details ways in which European firms have exploited weak US labour laws to carry out aggressive campaigns against workers' organising and bargaining in the United States. "A Strange Case" comes from Robert Louis Stevenson's famous The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

This is a transcript of Professor Lance Compa’s presentation to the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation Conference held in Washington, DC on November 12, 1996 and published in the American University Journal of International Law and Policy. [Excerpt] After all of the excellent comments this morning and so far this afternoon, both from the panelists and from the floor, I am not sure that I can say anything new about the NAALC. So, what I want to do in this intervention is add some comparative discussion with respect to the European Union and the social charter of the European …

Can Leaders Step Outside Of The Gender Box? An Examination Of Leadership And Gender Role Stereotypes, Margaret Y. Padgett, Craig B. Caldwell, Andrew Embry
Craig B. Caldwell
This study examined gender stereotypes for leaders using a more indirect method than is typical in stereotype research. Rather than reveal the leader's gender, this study used vignettes in which the leader's gender was unknown. Consistent with their hypothesis, the authors found that participants were more likely to infer a male (female) gender identity than a female (male) gender identity when presented with a leader using a masculine (feminine) style. They also hypothesized that a leader using a gender-consistent leadership style would be viewed more positively than a leader using a gender-inconsistent style. Contrary to this hypothesis, results revealed that …

Organisational Perspectives On Anti-Doping Work In Sport, Alanah Kazlauskas, Helen M. Hasan
Organisational Perspectives On Anti-Doping Work In Sport, Alanah Kazlauskas, Helen M. Hasan
Helen Hasan
The diverse challenges associated with anti-doping work in sport can result in multiple, competing viewpoints amongst stakeholder groups working to solve the problem. Coupled with the complexity of the problem itself, this has the potential to generate chaotic or disordered work contexts that impede rather than promote progress towards a solution. A visible lack of progress can be magnified to a public perception of anti-doping work as ineffective. We offer the Cynefin Framework, informed by Complexity Theory, as a novel theoretical and methodological lens for sense-making in the changing global context of anti-doping work. The framework’s applicability at both individual …

Democratising Organisational Knowledge: The Potential Of The Corporate Wiki, Helen Hasan, Charmaine Pfaff
Helen Hasan
Attempts to impose knowledge management often ignore the vast organisational resource of workrelated tacit knowledge possessed by knowledge workers. Our research reveals that activities supported by social technologies such as Wikis, may provide a more appropriate capability for tacit knowledge management where a network centric focus is adopted. A corporate Wiki has the potential to engage the collective responsibilities of knowledge workers to transfer their collective experience and skills into a dynamic shared knowledge repository. However, the traditional organisational culture can be reluctant to allow this power shift which surrenders the monopolistic control of the few over the creation and …
