A large literature has documented significant public health benefits associated with the minimum legal drinking age in the USA, particularly because of the resulting effects on motor vehicle accidents. These benefits form the primary basis for continued efforts to restrict youth access to alcohol. It is important to keep in mind that policymakers have a wide variety of alcohol-control options available to them, and understanding how these policies may complement or substitute for one another can improve policy making moving forward. Towards this end, we propose that investigating the causal effects of the minimum legal drinking age in New South …

This study explores how green based intrapreneurial flexibility affects sustainable business performance of the Sri Lankan hotel industry. A survey was administered to a random sample of senior managers of hotels in Sri Lanka. Linear regression analysis revealed a significant path coefficient which explained green based intrapreneurial flexibility positively influenced sustainable competitive advantage. The findings suggest that hotel industry policy makers develop green specific intrapreneurial capabilities so that they can quickly adapt their green based product and service offerings in responding to changes of the green market requirements by focusing on green based new venture creation, green innovation, green related …

Cross-Border Electricity Cooperation In South Asia, Anoop Singh, Tooraj Jamasb, Rabindra Nepal, Michael Toman

South Asian countries, facing challenges in efficiently meeting growing electricity demand, can benefit from increased cross-border electricity cooperation and trade by harnessing complementarities in electricity demand patterns, diversity in resource endowments for power generation, and gains from larger market access. The region has witnessed slow progress in expanding regional electricity cooperation and trade, and undertaking needed domestic sector reforms. Although bilateral electricity sector cooperation in the region is increasing, broader regional cooperation and trade initiatives have lagged in the face of regional barriers and domestic sector inefficiencies. Deeper electricity market reforms are not a necessity for further development of cross-border …

Do Low-Skilled Migrants Contribute More To Home Country Income? Evidence From South Asia, Arusha V. Cooray Jan 2014

Do Low-Skilled Migrants Contribute More To Home Country Income? Evidence From South Asia, Arusha V. Cooray

A recursive system is employed to investigate the indirect effect of out-migration on gross domestic product (GDP) through remittances in South Asia, namely Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Out-migration is further disaggregated by skill level and country of destination (Middle East and other), and their effects on GDP through remittances are examined. The results suggest that migration and remittances have an important significant effect on the GDP of the countries under study. Of the skill categories, the unskilled category has the largest robust indirect effect on GDP. The effects of migration on GDP by country of destination suggest …

Do Countries Belonging To The Same Region Suggest The Same Growth Enhancing Variables? Evidence From Selected South Asian Countries, Arusha Cooray, Antonio Paradiso, Francesco Giovanni Truglia Jan 2013

Do Countries Belonging To The Same Region Suggest The Same Growth Enhancing Variables? Evidence From Selected South Asian Countries, Arusha Cooray, Antonio Paradiso, Francesco Giovanni Truglia

We investigate the growth enhancing variables in a group of countries belonging to the same geographical area namely, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh over the period 1960-2010. We find that this "homogeneity" does not necessarily imply that countries have the same growth enhancing variables due mainly to differences in institutions and policies. Our result suggests that time-series econometrics are preferable to identify the growth drivers for a country accurately.

Integrating input-output (IO) analysis and econometric model has become increasingly popular for it combines the advantages of both models (Isard & Anselin, 1982; Moghadam & Ballard, 1988; Beaumont, 1990; Coomes et al., 1991; West, 1991; Treyz, 1993; Israilevich et al., 1996; Rey, 1998; Motii, 2005). There are a number of strategies through which an IO analysis is merged with an econometric model. This paper examines two strategies to build an integrated input-output econometric (IO-EC) model, namely coupling and holistic embedding, from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Each strategy is analysed based on their simulation and forecasting performance. Both strategies are …

Human Resources Management Practices In Small And Medium Enterprises In Two Emerging Economies In Asia: Indonesia And South Korea, Palli Mulla K A Chandrakumara

Sydney Business School - Papers

This paper explores human resource management practices in small and medium enterprises Indonesia and South Korea. Despite the fact that these countries have been identified as strong emerging economies and the pivotal role that SMEs play in these countries, a relatively less attention has been paid to investigate HRM practices of SEMs. This study uses existing empirical research and published data to explore HRM practices of SMEs in the two countries. The analysis of HRM practices is made with respect to both cultural values orientations of the two nations and different theories and models of HRM practices. The findings reflect …

Evidence On The Convergence Of Per Capita Income: A Comparison Of Founder Members Of The Association Of South East Asian Nations And The South Asian Association Of Regional Cooperation, Kankesu Jayanthakumaran, Shao-Wei Lee

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

This paper investigates the per capita income convergence patterns of a set of Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries. We obtained a time-series analysis for stochastic convergence by applying unit-root tests in the presence of two endogenously-determined structural breaks. We then supplemented the results by tests that produced evidence for b convergence. The evidence shows that the relative per capita income series of ASEAN-5 countries were consistent with stochastic convergence and b convergence, but this was not found for SAARC-5 countries. For the ASEAN-5 countries, the structural breaks associated with …

An Analysis Of Mature Aged Female Participation In New South Wales Regional Labour Markets, Natalie Akmacic, Martin O'Brien

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

The analysis of regional markets has surfaced as an important emerging area of economic research in recent years. In particular, economists have attempted to explain the factors behind divergent trends in different regions' growth, migration, structural change and employment. With this in mind, the focus of this paper is to explore the trends in regional labour force participation for mature females over the period 1992 to present. The labour force participation of this group is particularly relevant in the context of Australia's ageing population. To analyse mature age participation we utilise ANOVA to determine the differences between various Australian regions …

Culture Of Social Institutions And Behavioural Manifestations In Entrepreneurship Development: A South-Asian Case, Helan R. Gamage, Ananda Wickramasinghe

Sydney Business School - Papers

This paper is based on the South Asian culture, social institutions and entrepreneurship in particular to Sri Lankan entrepreneurship. Sri Lankan culture demonstrates various complex and unique behavioral patterns. Sri Lankan entrepreneurial culture can be identified to have evolved through two different routes. One can be traced to the origins of Sri Lankan civilization and the other to the western influence, originating from the Industrial Revolution, and imposed through colonization which systematically destroyed the indigenous feudal system. Moreover, the ideology of entrepreneurship training and education in Sri Lanka is exclusively western in origin and character. Observations of this research showed …

A unique form of organization that has not received much attention is the emergency services organization, which is tasked with responding to crises and disasters such as floods, fires, hurricanes, tsunamis, and other natural and man-made disasters. Effective responses in such situations are reliant on the availability of archived information as well as on the effective real-time integration and utilization of data coming from various channels including sensors, satellites, social media feeds, photos, video and cell phone GPS signals or 'Big Data' (IBM 2012; Rich 2012). The effective management of these events also requires the collaboration and coordination of a …

Capital Structure And Its Implications: Empirical Evidence From An Emerging Market In South Asia, Athula S. Manawaduge, Anura De Zoysa, Palli Mulla K A Chandrakumara

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Using panel data regression analysis for a sample of 171 companies, this paper examines the implications of capital structure of corporate entities in an emerging market, Sri Lanka. The results demonstrate that most of the Sri Lankan firms finance their operations with short-term debt capital as against the long-term debt capital. It provides strong evidence to indicate that debt capital has a negative impact on firm performance. The study also found a significant negative relationship between tangibility and performance indicating inefficient utilization of non-current assets. The negative performance implications associated with over-utilization of short-term debts and the under-utilization non-current assets …

Value For Money? Neo-Liberalism In New South Wales Prisons, Jane L. Andrew, Damien Cahill Jan 2009

Value For Money? Neo-Liberalism In New South Wales Prisons, Jane L. Andrew, Damien Cahill

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The NSW prison sector has undergone considerable reform over the last ten years. The NSW government now oversees the operation of publicly managed prisons, one privately managed prison and a number of new public prisons operating under the new 'Way Forward' management model. In order to establish which approach to prison management offered the best value for money, the NSW government undertook a 'value for money' assessment in 2005. In this article, we argue the cost accounting information is privileged in the assessment process. However, we contend that this information was limited and partial, and provided a poor basis on …

A Marketing Perspective On Choice Factors Considered By South African First-Year Students In Selecting A Higher Education Institution, Melanie Wiese, C H Van Heerden, Yolanda Jordaan, E North

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The unstable and turbulent environment in which higher education institutions all over the world currently have to operate poses many management and marketing challenges to such institutions. As non-profit organisations, the ability of higher education institutions to survive and grow would be enhanced by up-to-date knowledge and information regarding the higher education environment, and more specifically by having marketing and communication strategies that might influence students making decisions on which university to enrol at. The main goal of this study was to investigate the relevant importance of the choice factors that prospective students considered, as well as the sources of …

An Assessment Of The Trade Relationship Between Australia And South Africa, Mokhtar Metwally, Ann Hodgkinson, Andre Jordaan

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper examines the trade relationship between Australia and South Africa to assess if it is justifiable to establish a FTA between these two countries. The paper uses the cointegration analysis to examine the long-term trade relationship between these two countries. The results suggest that Australian-South African trade has unique features which indicate that its growth is not just a reflection of overall world trade. The paper also uses a simultaneous equations model to test if there are significant feedback effects in Australian trade with South Africa. The results suggest that intensification of the trade relationship would be beneficial to …

Deficit Financing In Lcds: Evidence From South Asia, Muhammad K. Chowdhury Jan 2005

Deficit Financing In Lcds: Evidence From South Asia, Muhammad K. Chowdhury

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Fiscal policy triggers three distinct effects on the economy such as (1) interest rate effect (2) price effect and (3) exchange rate effect. A VAR system was developed to capture these effects in jive South Asian countries. Empirical results suggest that budgetary action does not have any perceptible influence ·on the interest rate of the sampled countries. In terms of the price effect, fiscal action has opposite effects in Bangladesh and India. Fiscal action tends to increase aggregate price level in India but reduces the price level in Bangladesh, although the magnitude is very small. For Pakistan the price effect …

Administrative data on foster carers in New South Wales (NSW) are sadly lacking. Based on research commissioned by the NSW Department of Community Services, this paper uses the Australian Bureau of Statistics Census of Population and Housing and other data to provide up to date information on the characteristics of foster carers and the demographic trends that are influencing their numbers. Census data indicate that foster carer families are most likely to contain women aged 35-54 years, not in the labour force. Couples account for two thirds of all foster carers, with the majority of those couples also caring for …
