Manipulation In The Agricultural Commodities Futures Market: Application Of Benford's Law, Frank Tenkorang, Greg Nies Nov 2023

Manipulation In The Agricultural Commodities Futures Market: Application Of Benford's Law, Frank Tenkorang, Greg Nies

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This paper proposes that Benford’s Law is an effective tool for determining futures market irregularities and therefore should be adopted and used in efforts to detect and prevent manipulation in the agriculture commodities futures market. Market manipulation, while hard to define and even harder to detect and prevent, has long been a concern for traders and regulators alike. Market power manipulation – the intentional use of monopolistic power to cause market prices to diverge from their competitive level – harms the market by eroding its efficiency and impairing market integrity thereby driving away potential traders and ultimately undermining financial markets, …

Learning In Context: Exploring Student Cognitive Maps, Kevin Davis, Eric J. Tucker Sep 2023

Learning In Context: Exploring Student Cognitive Maps, Kevin Davis, Eric J. Tucker

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This study examines how concept-by-concept learning can provide students with a robust conceptual cognitive map for the area under study. In-context learning indicates that students understand how individual concepts are related and apply to real-world situations. Our results show that insights can be gained from understanding the degree of in-context learning in a course. Faculty can use this information to guide instruction in real time and make curriculum adjustments. This approach is also helpful because it can be replicated in any course to develop knowledge about students’ conceptual understanding.

Cognitive, Ideological, And Goal-Pursuit Barriers To Ethical Decision Making, Jeffrey J. Bailey Jun 2023

Cognitive, Ideological, And Goal-Pursuit Barriers To Ethical Decision Making, Jeffrey J. Bailey

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This paper brings together diverse research findings to suggest that there are several cognitive, ideological, and goal-pursuit barriers that often get in the way of ethical decision-making. The barriers lead managers to give little or no conscious attention to the ethical implications of their actions. The barriers that I categorize and describe are overconfidence, cognitively “filling-in” of missing information, social norm beliefs, ethical fixed mindsets, metaphors in-use, fairness and justice ideology, behavioral scripts, goal-fever (teleopathy), and goal framing. I describe the processes and mechanisms that underlie these barriers to increase awareness of them so that the willing manager may be …

Value Co-Creation In Buy Online Pickup In-Store (Bopis), Elizabeth H. Manser Payne, Addison G. Smith Jun 2023

Value Co-Creation In Buy Online Pickup In-Store (Bopis), Elizabeth H. Manser Payne, Addison G. Smith

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

The purpose of this study is to identify consumer attitudes toward buy online pickup in-store (BOPIS). This study examines how value perceptions change as consumers progress in the online ordering and physical pickup processes within the BOPIS channel. We use a multivariate regression and two separate multiple regression analyses to examine the differential effects of multiple constructs on BOPIS customer satisfaction. As consumers start the process by engaging with the retailer online, perceived usefulness and hedonic value online play a critical role in customer satisfaction. Consumer attitudes change as they pick up their order at the store where the degree …

Pandemic, Retail Sales And Local Economies: Evidence From Northeast Oklahoma, Sanchari Ghosh, Brian Jackson, Ray Murphy May 2023

Pandemic, Retail Sales And Local Economies: Evidence From Northeast Oklahoma, Sanchari Ghosh, Brian Jackson, Ray Murphy

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Early post-COVID pandemic studies focused on the macroeconomic impacts of that event on employment, income, healthcare costs, food security, etc. Yet there has been little emphasis on how changes in consumption spending patterns resulting from the pandemic affected retail sales and revenues, each of which are major contributors of growth for local economies. This study investigates these relationships by implementing retail pull and sales gap analyses to determine how non-metropolitan rural regions responded to consumption expenditures and retail sales before and after the pandemic. Using three cities of northeastern Oklahoma as a case study, retail pull factors at the city …

Green Advertising: The Progress Of Three Decades (1991-2020), Abhishek Abhishek, Birud Sindhav, Jonna Holland, Phani Tej Adidam

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This paper presents an integrated review of 144 articles published on green advertising (GA) between 1991-2020. The extant literature is reviewed to aid taxonomical analysis of definitions, methodologies, and theoretical frameworks. The review suggests that the GA literature tracks the stimuli-moderators-outcome template of the general advertising literature. Consequently, advertising claims and appeals, consumer related factors, and product related factors are the organizing themes of the review. Emerging trends and possible research gaps for each of these three categories are identified. Based on a thorough discussion of current knowledge in the domain, detailed recommendations are presented to advance research in the …

R. Edward Freeman, Kirsten E. Martin, And Bishan L. Parmar, The Power Of And: Responsible Business Without Trade-Offs, Andrew B. Gustafson

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This book tells a story about business which runs counter to the simple notions that the purpose of business is simply to make as much money as possible. While it is not a business-ethics book per se, it is a book which certainly makes an argument that socially responsible businesses often do well, and it provides a wide range of practical contemporary examples of businesses who do just that.

This book promotes the idea that businesses can frequently find win-win choices which both make profit and achieve other worthwhile ends at the same time. The authors argue that a focus …

Educational Equivalency Of Raspberry Pi Clusters In High-Performance Computing, Victoria A. Steckline, Robert Houghton

Mountain Plains Business Conference

Abstract

High-performance computing is a difficult subject to teach in an academic setting, given the exorbitant costs and technical difficulties. Raspberry Pi single-board computers have been used in recent years to create clusters that function as mini high-performance computers. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the educational equivalence of building a Raspberry Pi cluster in comparison to running a high-performance computing environment. For this research, an eight-node cluster was built and tested in comparison to a laptop. Through the process of building the cluster, skills learned were documented to evaluate the educational value. This research concludes that the …

Providing Farmers With The Legal Tools Needed To Keep The Equipment Running: An Update On The Agricultural Right To Repair Movement, Greg Nies, Bruce Elder Oct 2022

Providing Farmers With The Legal Tools Needed To Keep The Equipment Running: An Update On The Agricultural Right To Repair Movement, Greg Nies, Bruce Elder

Mountain Plains Business Conference

This presentation examines and summarizes the right to repair movement from the perspective of its origins, development, legal basis and – most significantly – its unique manifestation within an agriculture perspective. The agricultural equipment sector is more concentrated and less competitive than many other industries, while the typical farmer remains fiercely independent and self-reliant. This unique situation has led to conflict, forming the basis of the current agricultural right to repair dispute. Accordingly, the current state of the agricultural right to repair movement is examined and explained based on the recent policy, legislation, and litigation efforts employed at federal and …

Effectuation And Co-Creation In Social Enterprises: Examining The Relationship In The Context Of Uncertainty, Vijayabaskar Masilamani, Usha Rani Budumuru, Nithin Sai Kolli, Phani Tej Adidam, Xiaoming Yang Oct 2022

Effectuation And Co-Creation In Social Enterprises: Examining The Relationship In The Context Of Uncertainty, Vijayabaskar Masilamani, Usha Rani Budumuru, Nithin Sai Kolli, Phani Tej Adidam, Xiaoming Yang

Mountain Plains Business Conference

This study attempts to adjudicate the correlation between effectuation and co-creation in the context of social enterprises in India. The environments in which social entrepreneurs operate are highly uncertain, given the lack of institutional support in their operations. Although scholars have attempted to define approaches and strategies for scaling social enterprises, we propose in this study the relevance of effectuation logic and its subsequent effect on co-creation in building social enterprises, whereas it is observed that other linear factors like government support and slack resources are moderated by non-linear variable like uncertainty. To achieve this, we consider government support and …

Incivility In The Accounting Classroom: Have Educator Views Changed In The Last Decade?, Pat Seaton, Bruce Elder, Matt Bjornsen, Sarah Borchers

Mountain Plains Business Conference

This paper is a revisit of a 2010 paper titled “Incivility in the Accounting Classroom” where faculty were surveyed on their perceptions of incivility centered around student actions in the classroom. The information provided will be used to discern the importance and incidence of incivility in accounting education. Results will be compared to those of the 2010 survey to obtain comparative data and discern trends and emerging concerns. The survey was tweaked to modernize it and bring in questions relating to both online learning and teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were selected from the American Accounting Association directory of …

Ceo Types And Firm Efficiency, Lok Chi Lam Oct 2022

Ceo Types And Firm Efficiency, Lok Chi Lam

Mountain Plains Business Conference

This paper investigates the connection between CEO types and firm efficiency. I utilize the general ability index (GAI) as a proxy to examine and separate CEO types: generalist CEOs and specialist CEOs. Initially, I applied the pooled ordinary least square on 26,830 firm-year observations to explore the GAI effect on firm efficiency. The finding shows that GAI has a negative impact on firm efficiency. It indicates that CEOs with lower GAI are better at improving firm efficiency; for instance, specialist CEOs are preferable to generalist CEOs. Further analysis of CEO types using the quadrant method supports this result.

Managerial Ability And Financial Statement Comparability, Matt Bjornsen, Matthew Stallings Oct 2022

Managerial Ability And Financial Statement Comparability, Matt Bjornsen, Matthew Stallings

Mountain Plains Business Conference

This study examines the relationship between managerial ability and financial statement comparability. We find that accounting comparability is associated with managerial ability. Specifically, firm-pairs by industry-year with similar managerial ability are associated with more comparable financial statements. We also find that firm-pairs with similarly low-level ability managers are associated with more comparable earnings than firm-pairs with similarly high-level ability managers. Overall, the results suggest that managers can impact the comparability of earnings and that less able managers are associated with more comparable financial statements.

A "Russian Romance Scam" Discussion Case Study, Karl Borden Oct 2022

A "Russian Romance Scam" Discussion Case Study, Karl Borden

Mountain Plains Business Conference

It should not be a surprise that the increasing ubiquity of online dating and the use of social media generally for romantic liaisons has in turn provided fertile ground for a substantive increase in romantic con games and scams. The Internet Crime Complaint Center of the FBI in 2018 reported that online dating and romance scams was one of the top Internet scams reported with over 18,000 complaints reporting losses of over $362 million. (Whitty, 2015; pp444).

In 2020, this author received a fairly standard “broadcast” email that he immediately recognized as the opening play of a “Honey Pot” scam. …

Men In Nursing: Implications For The Profession And Broader Workforce Trends, David K. Palmer, Nancy Stuart, Michelle Fleig-Palmer Oct 2022

Men In Nursing: Implications For The Profession And Broader Workforce Trends, David K. Palmer, Nancy Stuart, Michelle Fleig-Palmer

Mountain Plains Business Conference

Typically, nursing has been considered a gendered profession dominated by women. As traditionally blue-collar, male-dominated occupations such as assembly-line work have declined, the percentage of men in the nursing profession has increased to 12%. This is not a recent phenomenon;a significant percentage of men served as nurses up through the 1800’s.

In this analysis of men serving in the nursing workforce, we begin with a historical review and then discuss implications for the nursing profession, e.g., recruitment, education, practice, retention, and culture, as well as implications for the broader labor market, e.g., compensation trends by industry and gender

Ncaa Interdivisional Games: Are There More Injuries When David Plays Goliath?, David L. Carr, Gregory M. Huckabee, Thomas Tiahrt

Mountain Plains Business Conference

All intercollegiate football carries a risk of injury in a collision sport. Schools from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) often play early-season games against schools from the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). FCS schools (David) often receive the largest payouts by playing FBS schools. FBS schools (Goliath) are able to schedule early-season games they are likely to win while providing the opportunity to tune up their teams. Our research question is whether FCS teams report more injuries when playing FBS opponents than they report when playing FCS opponents. We have received access to the NCAA injury dataset from Datalys.
