Share Farming And The Development Of The Dairy Industry In New South Wales 1890‐1940, Robert Castle, James Hagan

Robert G. Castle

This article assesses the role of share fanning in the NSW dairy industry until the second world war. It examines the origins of the industry and the effects of the 'Dairy Revolution' on the production of milk, cream and butter in the context of the NSW government's policy of 'closer settlement'. Child Labour In South Asia: Domestic And International Initiatives Including Ilo And Wto, D P Chaudhri, Robert Castle, Chris Nyland

Robert G. Castle

South Asia has the largest concentration of child labour and of children not participating in school education. This paper aims to examine the trends in the incidence of child labour in five countries of the region, for the period 1965-1995 and to to delineate patterns in socio-economic correlates relevant to this issue. Multilateral organizations and national governments need to focus the greater part of their efforts on the children most at risk-i.e., those in morally and physically hazardous occupations. The national governments must focus more on agriculture and home-based occupations in the informal sector which account for a large amount …

This paper has several areas of focus. It chronicles the history of Aboriginal employment in Australia in two contrasting areas; it identifies the characteristics of that employment and traces the nature of its change over time; it outlines the attitude of Aborigines towards their work, and the impact of that work on Aboriginal society; it also considers the attitudes of white Australians towards Aborigines and their employment. Finally, it draws some conclusions concerning the responses of the Aborigines to pressures put on them by the economy and society of the white man.

Settlers And The State: The Creation Of An Aboriginal Workforce In Australia, Robert Castle, Jim Hagan Jun 2012

Settlers And The State: The Creation Of An Aboriginal Workforce In Australia, Robert Castle, Jim Hagan

Robert G. Castle

White settlement of Australia began a process whereby the Aboriginal people who had settled the Australian continent for 40,000 years were dispossessed of their land, economy, society and often their lives. Henry Reynold's 'Law of the Land'' demonstrates the impact of the application of the doctrine of 'Terra Nullius' on Aboriginal society and the subsequent development of black-white relations in Australia. Land was the foundation of Aboriginal life - of an economic, religious and cultural system centred on hunting and gathering which provided a basis for a sustainable and stable society. The alienation of Aboriginal land and the resulting conflict …

Role Expectations As Antecedents Of Citizenship: The Moderating Effects Of Work Context, Erich C. Dierdorff, Robert S. Rubin, Daniel G. Bachrach Dec 2011

Role Expectations As Antecedents Of Citizenship: The Moderating Effects Of Work Context, Erich C. Dierdorff, Robert S. Rubin, Daniel G. Bachrach

Robert S. Rubin

In this field study of 198 incumbents, we examine how facets of work context affect the relationship between employees’ role expectations and supervisor ratings of their citizenship. Building on an emerging focus in the citizenship literature, we expand the scope of role perceptions to capture employees’ beliefs about the importance of various work activities and worker attributes needed for successful role performance (i.e., role expectations). Results support the role theory framework that we develop and suggest that aspects of both the social and task context moderate the relationship between employees’ role expectations for prosocial role requirements and citizenship. Implications of …
