To better connect with the potential fan base in the United Kingdom, the NFL created another Instagram account, separate from their main “NFL” account, with the username “NFLUK”. In this thesis, I conducted a content analysis comparing a selection of posts made during the 2021 NFL season for each account, “NFL” and “NFLUK” to examine how the NFL modified their posts and communication for their new target audience. The posts were examined through the perspective of two different communication theories: The Elaboration Likelihood Model of Persuasion and the Adaptation versus Standardization Model of International Marketing. The goal was to determine …

The COVID-19 pandemic is far more than a health crisis: it has unpredictably changed our whole way of life. As suggested by the analysis of economic data on sales, this dramatic scenario has also heavily impacted individuals’ spending levels. To better understand these changes, the present study focused on consumer behavior and its psychological antecedents. Previous studies found that crises differently affect people’s willingness to buy necessities products (i.e., utilitarian shopping) and non-necessities products (i.e., hedonic shopping). Therefore, in examining whether changes in spending levels were associated with changes in consumer behavior, we adopted a fine-grained approach disentangling between necessities …

From Anxiety To Control: Mask-Wearing, Perceived Marketplace Influence, And Emotional Well-Being During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Abigail B. Schneider, Bridget Leonard

Management, Marketing, and Organizational Communication Department Faculty Works

Mask-wearing has been one of the most prominent, conflicted, and deeply divided issues in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. Across two studies, we seek to understand how beliefs and behaviors around mask-wearing are associated with the relationship between anxiety about the coronavirus and feelings of control over one’s health outcomes during the pandemic. In Study 1, we find that beliefs in the response efficacy of mask-wearing moderate the relationship between anxiety and control. Study 2 extends these results by investigating the underlying process. Specifically, we find that the relationship between anxiety and control is mediated by self-reported mask-wearing …

Revitalizing The Municipal Model: A Case Study Of Winter Park Golf Course, Jeff Arnold Jan 2020

Revitalizing The Municipal Model: A Case Study Of Winter Park Golf Course, Jeff Arnold

Honors Theses

This thesis aims to provide a well-substantiated possible course of action for municipalities facing uncertain futures with their golf facilities. The trend of failing municipal golf courses has become prevalent since 2007, resulting in an overall decrease in the number of municipal facilities throughout the country. This is an unfortunate reality, as municipal golf plays a key role in introducing the sport to a racially and socio-economically diverse group of people, and has also played a crucial part in combatting golf’s traditional issues with racism and elitism. Ultimately, because of the accessibility and model of equality provided by municipal golf …

The Marketing Of Fame: How Kim Kardashian Has Sustained Her Fame, And What Companies Can Learn From Her, Elizabeth Paquette

Honors Theses

This research paper stands to prove that celebrities are no longer simply revered only for their talents or skill but have begun to outgrow the natural fame that comes with the skill, and/or have become famous for really no apparent or tangible reason at all, or possibly that there is now a new definition of celebrity. Their fame has worked in a cycle, famous for being famous. I will set out to prove the following: they continue their fame through the efforts of clever marketing. They use new or improved marketing tactics to further build their personal brands, create connections …

Achieving Broadened Accountability In Nonprofit Governance Through Social Competence Within A Community Of Practice, J. Bart Morrison Jan 2020

Achieving Broadened Accountability In Nonprofit Governance Through Social Competence Within A Community Of Practice, J. Bart Morrison

Management, Marketing, and Organizational Communication Department Faculty Works

The nonprofit sector is challenged by increasing public and stakeholder demands for a Broadened Accountability (BA). Strong expectations for performance accountability now accompany those for fiscal accountability. In response, better concepts of nonprofit accountability and associated practices to achieve it are being developed in the literature. However, knowledge of obstacles to achieving Broadened Accountability and possible paths towards overcoming them has lagged. This paper attempts to stimulate research and contribute to such knowledge by 1) elaborating on the assertion that a central difficulty is found in a pair of perceived governance dilemmas that can drive leaders into either/or choices between …

Achieving Broadened Accountability In Nonprofit Governance, J. Bart Morrison

Management, Marketing, and Organizational Communication Department Faculty Works

Knowledge of obstacles to achieving Broadened Accountability (BA) in the nonprofit sector and possible paths towards overcoming them has lagged. This paper attempts to stimulate research and contribute to such knowledge by exploring the role that a Community of Practice (CoP) can play in avoiding governance dilemmas and developing grounded concepts around how certain relational practices contribute to the formation of a CoP. The study's ethnographic methods recorded and analyzed real-life interactions involving a board chair-CEO pair. The paper presents narrative description of these actions to convey its key contribution - a process model for overcoming obstacles to achieving BA.

Towards Achieving Broadened Accountability: Transcending Governance Dilemmas, J. Bart Morrison Jan 2019

Towards Achieving Broadened Accountability: Transcending Governance Dilemmas, J. Bart Morrison

Management, Marketing, and Organizational Communication Department Faculty Works

Demands for Broadened Accountability (BA) of nonprofit organizations require that boards achieve a high level of engagement to address important issues properly (Morrison & Salipante, 2007). This paper presents the theoretical basis for boards falling short of such engagement and specifies fundamental obstacles leaders face in achieving BA. One set of especially salient obstacles is conceptualized as false governance dilemmas. Two are considered in this paper: legitimacy vs. efficiency (Di Maggio & Powell, 1983; Deephouse, 1996; Morrison & Salipante, 2006) and conflict/monitoring vs. cooperation/collaboration. Two broadly defined relational practices – integrative bargaining (Walton & McKersie, 1965) and maintenance of high-trust/high-distrust …

Technology Change Or Resistance To Changing Institutional Logics: The Rise And Fall Of Digital Equipment Corporation, Michael S. Lewis Jan 2019

Technology Change Or Resistance To Changing Institutional Logics: The Rise And Fall Of Digital Equipment Corporation, Michael S. Lewis

Management, Marketing, and Organizational Communication Department Faculty Works

This article uses an institutional lens to analyze organizational failure. It does this through a historical case study of Digital Equipment Corporation, an innovator and market leader of minicomputers who faltered and eventually failed during the period of technological change brought on by the emergence of the personal computer. The failure of Digital Equipment Corporation is interesting because it occurred despite its ability to adapt to changing technological forces. An institutional analysis shows that while Digital Equipment Corporation was able to develop personal computers widely considered technologically superior to its competitors, it resisted broader changes occurring in its institutional context. …

Kids, Caregivers, And Cartoons: The Impact Of Licensed Characters On Food Choices And Consumption, Bridget Leonard, Margaret C. Campbell, Kenneth C. Manning Jan 2019

Kids, Caregivers, And Cartoons: The Impact Of Licensed Characters On Food Choices And Consumption, Bridget Leonard, Margaret C. Campbell, Kenneth C. Manning

Management, Marketing, and Organizational Communication Department Faculty Works

This research examines effects of on-package licensed characters on children’s and caregivers’ choices of healthy and indulgent food and children’s consumption amount. The authors propose that food liking exerts the greatest influence on children’s choices and consumption, such that the impact of on-package characters will be limited to choices between equally liked options. Caregivers’ choices are primarily influenced by their food goals for their children; thus, the impact of characters will likewise be limited to caregivers’ within-category choices. Two experiments show that a character influences children’s choices between two same-category options but not between indulgent and healthier options. A third …

Brand Loyalty In A Bertrand-Type Oligopoly Setting, Demetri Kantarelis Jan 2019

Brand Loyalty In A Bertrand-Type Oligopoly Setting, Demetri Kantarelis

Economics and Global Studies Department Faculty Works

It appears that in today’s brand-proliferating, constantly market-segmenting and technologically evolving global economy, consumer perceptions affect an entire industry in which brand loyalty is possible such as the extremely hot and rapidly developing global smartphone industry. In a brand-loyalty-prone industry, what are the implications of brand loyalty in terms of, among others, industry price, sales and profit? I propose a market structure in which each firm’s profit depends on sales of a brand realized in a captive market segment as well as on sales of the same brand realized in a non-captive market segment; ignoring costs of production and assuming …

Integrating Care And Critical Reflection In Women's Leadership Development Programs, Robin Ayers Frkal Jan 2018

Integrating Care And Critical Reflection In Women's Leadership Development Programs, Robin Ayers Frkal

Management, Marketing, and Organizational Communication Department Faculty Works

Women’s leadership development programs (WLDPs) have been suggested as programmatic additions for achieving gender-equity in organizational contexts. These programs are conceptualized as transformative learning spaces affording women the opportunity to explore uncritically examined assumptions and create new perspectives of themselves as leaders. This paper explains how these types of transformative learning environments are predicated on dialogue that encourages critical reflection in the context of caring relationships. Recognizing that women may arrive in leadership programs with varied capacities for both relational learning and critical reflection, this paper seeks to explore the communication practices needed to create the dialogic conditions of care …

The Super Bowl's Economic Impact On Its Host City, Ashley Lockwood Jan 2018

The Super Bowl's Economic Impact On Its Host City, Ashley Lockwood

Honors Theses

In this paper, I am going to discuss the major differences between the sports boosters' pregame estimates compared to the economists' post game analysis. In my research, I analyze all 32 cities with an NFL team over the most recent 20 years to see if there is a significant impact on the host's economy. This research will show if increasing local taxes in order to host the game yields an increase in per capita GDP after the game. Tax payers accept higher tax rates under the impression that, after the game, their city will reap massive benefits from hosting the …

Mastering Customer Loyalty, Kathleen M. Hurley Jan 2017

Mastering Customer Loyalty, Kathleen M. Hurley

Honors Theses

Customer loyalty can be described as “the result of consistently positive emotional experience, physical attribute-based satisfaction and perceived value of an experience, which includes the product or services” (Shaw & Hamilton 2015). Since 1896, loyalty programs have developed from a simple stamp redemption system to an intricate in-store and digital model. This system has become so successful because it properly engages the customer, both inside and outside the store, to build a mutually beneficial relationship between the business and the customer. Understanding customer loyalty is essential in creating a program that will provide the customer with incentives to reward their …

The Effect Of Distance From Nhl Affiliate On Ahl Fan Attendance, Stephen Picard Jan 2017

The Effect Of Distance From Nhl Affiliate On Ahl Fan Attendance, Stephen Picard

Honors Theses

This paper examines the effect of American Hockey League (AHL) teams locating closer to their National Hockey League (NHL) affiliates. With several AHL teams closing the distance (geographically) between their NHL affiliates for logistical purposes, I studied whether or not they will experience higher levels of fan support. I used data from all AHL teams between 2007 and 2017. I found a statistically insignificant negative relationship between proximity to NHL affiliate and average attendance in the AHL for all the teams. However, less popular AHL teams do experience higher levels of fan attendance when located closer to their NHL affiliate. …

What The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Does Not Include: An Examination Of The Importance Of Audit Firm Rotation, Audit Firm Credibility And Tone At The Top, Nicole Damaschi Jan 2016

What The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Does Not Include: An Examination Of The Importance Of Audit Firm Rotation, Audit Firm Credibility And Tone At The Top, Nicole Damaschi

Honors Theses

This thesis is an examination of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) that was passed in response to a wave of accounting frauds, including Enron and WorldCom. Paul Sarbanes and Michael Oxley established SOX in an attempt to restore investors' confidence in the financial statements of publicly traded companies. However, there are critical elements of financial reporting that it fails to address, like audit firm rotation, audit firm credibility and management's tone at the top. Mandatory audit firm rotation and credible audit firms are believed to result in high-quality audits while management's tone at the top is reflected through the honesty and …

The Benefits Of Lunch Breaks, Joseph Dipilato Iv Jan 2016

The Benefits Of Lunch Breaks, Joseph Dipilato Iv

Honors Theses

The question as to whether or not taking breaks from work is beneficial for improving employee productivity has not been thoroughly examined, as it is still a fairly new topic of discussion. This thesis project sought to compile evidence to support the claim that breaks are indeed useful for this purpose. A review of the literature found not only information that directly supports this assertion, but also information that shows the numerous negative side-effects of not taking breaks from work. Certain workplace factors that influence break-taking behaviors were also discussed. For the purpose of providing modern-day companies several means by …
