Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Purpose and approach: This article presents the case for creating stronger connections between research on graduate and worker employability. We offer a narrative review of commonalities and differences between these research streams and offer thoughts and suggestions for further integration and mutual learning. Findings: We outline some of the main theories and concepts in the graduate and worker employability domains. Furthermore, we analyze how these show considerable overlap, though they have barely connected with each other yet. We also formulate an agenda for future research that would spur stronger connections between the fields. Finally, we turn to our fellow authors, …

The Glass Ceiling: Is It Being Shattered?, James Schaap

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

The purpose of this descriptive and informative study is to determine whether women are breaking through the glass ceiling today in business. This informative report presents a synthesis of research from 63 writers over the past 25 years. We also wrote a brief review of 22 different commentaries about the glass ceiling. Although there is some evidence that the glass ceiling is cracking in many institutions, women continue to be under-represented in senior leadership. Many research articles continue to emphasize the need to reduce institutional bias through overhauling hiring and promotion practices and training awareness of implicit cognitive bias. Leader …

Postgraduate students are navigating a rapidly evolving landscape for their future careers. In this context, higher education providers are responsible for supporting and monitoring postgraduate (masters and doctoral) students’ development for both education and employability contexts. This empirical research provides a rich analysis of feedback breakfasts, focus groups and interviews with 319 postgraduate student participants from 26 universities. Emergent themes highlight widespread lack of confidence in university-mediated student experiences, particularly in the context of employability, and pessimism regarding career outcomes. Clarifying Job Search Clarity: Investigating Job Search As A Self-Regulatory Process, Lisa Kuron Jan 2020

Clarifying Job Search Clarity: Investigating Job Search As A Self-Regulatory Process, Lisa Kuron

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The central role of goals in facilitating self-regulation throughout the multiple stages of job search has been recognized by scholars and models of the job search process. I argue that despite numerous calls for more research on job search goals, critical questions remain unanswered and that an explicit focus on job search goals can advance the job search literature by enhancing our understanding of job search behaviours and outcomes, while also providing actionable advice for managing the emotional and exhausting process of looking for a job. In this dissertation, I contribute to job search research by identifying gaps in the …

Making The Cut: Receivers Of The National Football League, Anthony Kent Davis

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

In this paper the prospects of the National Football League, or NFL, are studied in order to determine the relationships between past college statistics, other “measurables,” and how they translate to successful careers in the league. When referring to measurables, this consists of all of the numerical data from each player that should, in theory, help teams get an idea of the players strengths or weaknesses. The data being used comes from an annual scouting combine for NFL teams that is held prior to each season. Information about the player’s college statistics and pre-draft measurables are being compared to several …

The Changing Face Of Entrepreneurship, Meryl Rosenblatt Mba, Cristina Ramirez, Sophia Ouloupis

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

In most developed countries today, having a work force with skill sets in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are seen as essential to long-term economic growth. In many countries, the demand for STEM workers is expected to grow faster than any other occupation over the next decade. Yet the research shows that females are underrepresented in STEM-related fields. The numbers of females entering into STEM careers is generally lower than males, but there are countries where females account for a greater percentage than males in other fields or occupations. In the U.S. women continue to be underrepresented in STEM …

Occupations, Organizations, And Boundaryless Careers, Pamela S. Tolbert Nov 2015

Occupations, Organizations, And Boundaryless Careers, Pamela S. Tolbert

Pamela S Tolbert

[Excerpt] The central premise of this chapter is that, as organizations become less important in defining career pathways and boundaries, occupations will become increasingly more important. While occupational demarcations have always had a significant, albeit often unacknowledged, impact on individual career patterns, the significance of such demarcations for careers is likely to be heightened by current trends in employment relationships. In this chapter, then, I review the sociological literature on occupational labor markets and on the structure of professional occupations, in an effort to shed light on a number of issues associated with occupationally based careers. Of specific concern are …

I Used To Work At Goldman Sachs! How Organizational Status Creates Rents In The Market For Human Capital, Matthew Bidwell, Shinjae Won, Roxana Barbulescu, Ethan Mollick Apr 2014

I Used To Work At Goldman Sachs! How Organizational Status Creates Rents In The Market For Human Capital, Matthew Bidwell, Shinjae Won, Roxana Barbulescu, Ethan Mollick

Roxana Barbulescu

We contribute to the literature on how human capital can contribute to competitive advantage by exploring whether having high status in the labor market allows employers to achieve rents in acquiring general human capital. Working for a high status employer provides workers with a valuable signal of ability which helps them to secure better jobs in the future. We argue that higher status employers can appropriate some of those advantages by attracting better workers without having to pay any more. We test these arguments using two unique datasets based on a career survey and internal investment banking personnel data. We …

Employers Need To Do More To Help Maintain Careers Of Employees With Babies, Leandra Preston-Sidler

It’s amazing how quickly humans adapt to changing circumstances. A few months ago I wrote about how incredibly challenging my first month of life was with a newborn—what many refer to as “baby boot camp,” a perfect term since that’s exactly what it was like thrust into a completely new state of being where life is organized around one thing.

Do Women Choose Different Jobs From Men? Mechanisms Of Application Segregation In The Market For Managerial Workers, Roxana Barbulescu, Matthew Bidwell Jan 2013

Do Women Choose Different Jobs From Men? Mechanisms Of Application Segregation In The Market For Managerial Workers, Roxana Barbulescu, Matthew Bidwell

Roxana Barbulescu

This paper examines differences in the jobs for which men and women apply in order to better understand gender segregation in managerial jobs. We develop and test an integrative theory of why women might apply to different jobs than men. We note that constraints based on gender role socialization may affect three determinants of job applications: how individuals evaluate the rewards provided by different jobs, whether they identify with those jobs, and whether they believe that their applications will be successful. We then develop hypotheses about the role of each of these decision factors in mediating gender differences in job …
