Trade Integration And Political Turbulence : Environmental Policy Consequences., Per G. Fredriksson, Muthukumara Mani
Trade Integration And Political Turbulence : Environmental Policy Consequences., Per G. Fredriksson, Muthukumara Mani
Faculty Scholarship
This paper contributes to the unresolved issue regarding the effect of economic integration on environmental policymaking. In particular, we discuss the joint impact of trade openness and political stability on environmental policymaking. Our theory predicts that the effect of trade integration on environmental policy is conditional on the degree of political stability. Trade integration affects the stringency of environmental policies due to changes in industry bribery behavior, and the effect is conditional on the degree of political stability. The empirical findings support the theory and are robust to alternative specifications. The stringency enhancing effect on environmental policy of trade integration …

Penny Pricing And The Components Of Spread And Depth Changes, David K. Ding, K.H. Chuang, C. Chearoenwong

Recent studies show that decimal pricing led to significant reductions in the spread and depth on the NYSE. In this paper, we examine how the observed changes in the spread and depth can be attributed to different factors. We show that stocks with higher proportions of one-tick spreads and odd-sixteenth quotes, and more frequent trading before decimalization experienced larger declines in the spread and depth afterwards. We interpret this result as evidence of reduced binding constraints and increased price competition under decimal pricing. We also find that decimal pricing led to nontrivial changes in select stock attributes, and that these …
Investing In Real Estate: Mortgage Financing Practices And Optimal Holding Period, Winston T. H. Koh, Edward H. K. Ng
Investing In Real Estate: Mortgage Financing Practices And Optimal Holding Period, Winston T. H. Koh, Edward H. K. Ng
Research Collection School Of Economics
Real estate investments are typically characterized by high degrees of leverage and long-loan tenures. In perfect capital markets, leverage has no impact on the investment decision apart from tax considerations. However, the mortgage financing market is imperfect in many countries. In the presence of market imperfections, an optimal holding period exists for real property investments. We provide a simple rule to calculate the optimal holding period to compare the required rate of return with the leveraged rate of return on equity.

Now that the NFL has refocused following Towelgate in the midst of what is developing as a most interesting season on the field, it might be worth going back to two stories that flew just beneath the radar over the past few weeks. These, of course, involved money, because we are talking about the NFL Money Machine, which continues to validate Al Davis' wisdom from 1978 when he noted in the wake of a lucrative television contract that "any dummy can make money operating a pro football club."

Ecrm Success And The Value Of Managerial Discretion. , T. Coltman, Sara Dolnicar

The performance payoff from electronic customer relationship management (eCRM) programs has become a growing concern in marketing and information technology research and practice. Yet despite a number of research reports by both practitioners and academic institutions there remains little evidence of any robust relationship between eCRM investment and performance. Building on a surprisingly sparse literature regarding the importance of managerial discretion, we show that the beliefs held by managers’ matter. Three distinct types of firms populate our data, and the relationship between eCRM performance and its underlying determinants varies greatly between them. This is critical to strategic marketing because it …

What Makes Students Attend Lectures? The Shift Towards Pragmatism In Undergraduate Lecture Attendance, Sara Dolnicar
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
An empirical study was conducted to gain understanding about reasons for lecture attendance among undergraduate students. Students were found to be heterogeneous regarding their reported lecture attendance motivations, with two segments representing prototypical extremes. The student group labelled “idealists” reported genuinely enjoying lectures and consisted of more mature aged students with working experience. Students labelled “pragmatics” were most highly represented in the Commerce Faculty, were among the younger students, reported attending lectures to get the information they need to succeed in the subject and demonstrated the lowest lecture attendance while achieving the highest grade point average. Generally, as opposed to …

Many local environmental volunteering organisations face difficulties attracting volunteers from specific subgroups of the community. Consequently, it is crucial to gain understanding about the variety of factors that move people to participate in environmental volunteering. Factors which might have been underestimated in the past given the rather homogeneous community groups of volunteers which are, e.g., predominantly of Anglo-Saxon origin. This study reports on an analysis of volunteering motivations based on a representative data set provided by the ABS. It reveals that volunteering motivations vary widely and illustrates possible new ways of marketing volunteering organisations in order to attract new community …

Why Do Dissatisfied Customers In The Business-To-Business Services Sector Stay With Their Existing Service Providers? An Exploratory Study, Venkata K. Yanamandram, L. White
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
There have been few studies that investigate the reasons that dissatisfied customers stay with service organisations. Further, there have been no studies that have investigated a range of factors simultaneously in a single model in the business services sector. This paper attempts to address this research gap. A qualitative study was conducted, with 17 personal interviews undertaken with managers who are involved in the choice of service providers. The results not only confirmed factors in the literature: switching costs, impact of alternative service providers, investment in relationships, service recovery and inertia, but also uncovered seven other factors: the service provider …

The Acculturation Of Middle Income Hispanic Households, Cecilia Maria Alvarez
The Acculturation Of Middle Income Hispanic Households, Cecilia Maria Alvarez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research on the consumer behavior of the Hispanic population has recently attracted the attention of marketing practitioners as well as researchers. This study's purpose was to develop a model and scales to examine the acculturation process of Hispanic consumers with income levels of $35,000 and above, and its effects on their consumer behavior. The proposed model defined acculturation as a bilinear and multidimensional change process, measuring consumers' selective change process in four dimensions: language preference, Hispanic identification, American identification, and familism. A national sample of 653 consumers was analyzed. The scales developed for testing the model showed good to high …

This paper
This paper lays out some of the basics of a language-based, person-centered, or agentic model of practice for nonprofit organizations, voluntary action and philanthropy within the emerging domain of commons theory. Six principles are identified for the practice of commons. Two threats to the production of common goods - bureaucratization and colonization of the life world - are discussed and evaluated as limitations of the practice of commons.

Entrepreneurial Orientation As A Basis For Classification Within A Service Industry: The Case Of Retail Pharmacy Industry, Thanigavelan Jambulingam, Ravi Kathuria, William R. Doucette
Business Faculty Articles and Research
To date, service classification research has primarily taken a macro view, creating service typologies or taxonomies by using dimensions such as customer contact or degree of labor intensity. Such classification schemes, though helpful in deciphering critical management issues and positioning strategies between service industries, tend to treat an entire industry, such as airlines, as a single homogenous entity. However, organizations in the same industry often use intangible resources, such as entrepreneurial orientation processes, to compete with one another. Resource-advantage theory suggests that organizations utilize intangible resources to build long-term strategies and a sustainable competitive advantage leading to superior performance. We …

Attention Hypocrites! Your future is in the executive suites of television networks and the officialdom of the National Football League. The only requirement is that you have the ability to make self-righteous pronouncements about public morality and taste while maintaining your composure and never once betraying yourself with so much as a hint of a smile. Even, the now fashionable smirk, will not be tolerated. If you get really good at this and have a relative in the cabinet you might even be appointed to head the FCC.

Relating Diet, Demographics And Lifestyle To Increasing U.S. Obesity Rates, Christiane Schroeter
Relating Diet, Demographics And Lifestyle To Increasing U.S. Obesity Rates, Christiane Schroeter
Agribusiness
Changes in the American lifestyle are putting more individuals at risk due to the declining quality of their diets. In the last 20 years, the readily available high-fat foods (e.g., "fast foods") combined with the decreased caloric requirements due to lower physical activity levels is assumed to be the major factor in the sharp rise in the prevalence of obesity. The typical away-from-home meal is less healthy than food at home, since it tends to contain more total fat and saturated fat, less calcium, fiber, and iron, and fewer servings of fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, due to the super-sizing trend …
