Leader-Follower Congruence And Transformational Leadership: A Test Using Response Surface Modeling, George Hrivnak, Tjai Nielsen Jun 2015

Leader-Follower Congruence And Transformational Leadership: A Test Using Response Surface Modeling, George Hrivnak, Tjai Nielsen

George Hrivnak

Using polynomial regression and response surface modeling in a lagged field study, we examine relationships among leader and follower extraversion fit and follower ratings of transformational leadership. This paper builds on prior research investigating the influence that leader and follower personality factors have on follower perceptions of leadership. Data from a sample of 117 Naval Midshipmen dyads suggest that leader-follower extraversion congruence at Time 1 was positively related to higher follower ratings of transformational leadership at Time 2. The implications of these findings are discussed with respect to perceptions and attributions of leadership, the potential role that extraversion congruence may …

Transnational Diaspora Entrepreneurship In Emerging Markets: Bridging Institutional Divides, Liesl Riddle, George Hrivnak, Tjai Nielsen Jul 2014

Transnational Diaspora Entrepreneurship In Emerging Markets: Bridging Institutional Divides, Liesl Riddle, George Hrivnak, Tjai Nielsen

George Hrivnak

Transnational diasporan entrepreneurs are migrants and their descendants who establish entrepreneurial activities that span the national business environments of their countries of origin and countries of residence. We explore how business incubators contribute to the economic development of emerging markets by organizing their programs to bridge the institutional divides that transnational diaspora entrepreneurs face when establishing their multi-territorial ventures in these markets. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork conducted in the Netherlands during 2007, we present the case study of IntEnt, an incubator providing services exclusively to transnational diasporan entrepreneurs. We apply Bergek and Norrman's (2008) assessment framework to this case, examining …

Do Sweat It: Using A Fitness Session As An Introduction To Research On The Relationship Between Physical And Mental States, A. Kenworthy, George Hrivnak Jun 2014

Do Sweat It: Using A Fitness Session As An Introduction To Research On The Relationship Between Physical And Mental States, A. Kenworthy, George Hrivnak

George Hrivnak

In this article, a hands-on experiential exercise session in a fitness centre is presented as a teaching tool for management instructors to facilitate a theoretically based discussion about the connection between individuals' physical and mental states. Before discussing the components of the exercise session itself, a rationale for integrating this exercise into management courses is presented. The exercise session is then described, with an overview of the logistics and operational components including both the legal release form and the reflection questions that are used before and after the session. Readers are encouraged to consider integrating this teaching tool into any …

Organizational Citizenship Behaviour And Performance: A Meta-Analysis Of Group-Level Research, Tjai Nielsen, George Hrivnak, Megan Shaw Aug 2010

Organizational Citizenship Behaviour And Performance: A Meta-Analysis Of Group-Level Research, Tjai Nielsen, George Hrivnak, Megan Shaw

George Hrivnak

Most of the research on the relationship between organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and performance has been conducted at the individual level. During the past 10 years, however, group-level research on that relationship has begun to appear. This article meta-analytically reviews 38 independent samples (N = 3,097) in which the relationship between OCB and performance was studied at the group level. The analyses in this study suggest a positive overall relationship between OCB and performance ( = .29), as well as the presence of several moderating variables. The theoretical implications of these findings are discussed, and some suggestions for future research …

A Framework For Leadership Development, George Hrivnak, Rebecca Reichard, Ronald Riggio Aug 2010

A Framework For Leadership Development, George Hrivnak, Rebecca Reichard, Ronald Riggio

George Hrivnak

Despite the tremendous amount of time, money, and energy spent by practitioners and scholars alike to understand, promote, and facilitate effective leadership development, the field is still far from fully understanding what is often regarded as both art and science. That is not to suggest, however, that the field's efforts have failed to result in substantial progress. Indeed, after defining some salient concepts and the overall scope of this chapter, we review some of the major theoretical and empirical advances in leadership development. Furthermore, the trends and 'best practices' dominant in today's organizations in leadership development are then summarized and …
