Virtual Reality Applications In The Hospitality / Tourism Industry, Patrick Horan
Virtual Reality Applications In The Hospitality / Tourism Industry, Patrick Horan
Conference papers
In this paper the possible applications of VR to the Tourism Industry are discussed. In order to develop an application for any industry one must first get a clear understanding of that industry. Once this is achieved the next step is to develop an application to suit the needs of the Industry. The Industry in question here is the Tourism Industry and this paper begins by discussing the Tourism Industry and more specifically the relationship between Tourism and technology. This is absolutely essential in order to understand how the use of VR will impact on the Tourism Industry in the …
Characteristics Of Member-Established Headings In The Oclc Database, Karen S. Calhoun
Characteristics Of Member-Established Headings In The Oclc Database, Karen S. Calhoun
Karen S Calhoun
Offers insights and recommendations on "gap" headings--OCLC member-contributed headings not covered by the LC name authority file--and suggests further analysis to identify headings for which "just in time" authority control would be appropriate. Extends what was learned in OCLC's early 1990s automated authority control project that corrected about 5.6 million headings in the OCLC database.

Reducing Cycle Time At An Ibm Wafer Fabrication Facility, Lieven Demeester, Christopher S. Tang
Reducing Cycle Time At An Ibm Wafer Fabrication Facility, Lieven Demeester, Christopher S. Tang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In 1991, IBM San Jose decided to produce and sell magnetic heads for computer disk drives on the open market to original equipment manufacturers. However, as IBM's wafer fabrication facility increased the number of products it manufactured, its manufacturing cycle time lengthened. Since cycle time is important in competing in the open market, IBM San Jose formed a study team (in cooperation with UCLA) to examine the wafer fab and to develop ways to reduce cycle time. The team designed a new production control system and proposed new performance measures for operators and engineers. IBM implemented the new production control …
Conceptual Integration Using Wrapped Applications, Christian Gassner, Hubert Oesterle, Ryosuke Hotaka
Conceptual Integration Using Wrapped Applications, Christian Gassner, Hubert Oesterle, Ryosuke Hotaka
Hubert Oesterle
This paper describes how object-oriented concepts can be used throughout system development for integration purposes. Based on the distinction of physical and conceptual integration the concept of object wrapping is discussed for the integration of non-object-oriented systems. By regarding applications as high-level objects, i.e. wrapped applications, integration is achieved by modelling so-called integration relationships between these wrapped applications. While in conceptual integration redundancy and message passing relationships are specified, in physical integration message passing relationships only are implemented. The paper finally outlines theactivities of the conceptual integration process.

Building An Information Infrastructure, Christopher E. Hoy
Building An Information Infrastructure, Christopher E. Hoy
Maine Policy Review
How we provide education, how farmers and manufacturers do business in local and global economies, and how rapidly-improving technologies will drive life in the 21st century remain somewhat mysterious. Christopher E. Hoy has been at the forefront of a movement to develop a telecommunications infrastructure in the state of Nebraska. He initiated a project called “The Global Community Initiative.” As part of that project, Hoy organized more than 45 community information technology committees in rural Nebraska and developed a model planning process for them to follow. He describes this as a statewide, grass-roots organizing effort designed to stimulate demand for …

Technological Specialization And Economic Performance In Oecd Countries, Mario Pianta, Valentina Meliciani
Technological Specialization And Economic Performance In Oecd Countries, Mario Pianta, Valentina Meliciani
Mario Pianta
The paper investigates the growing sectoral specialization in technological activities of OECD countries (measured using patent data) and its impact on countries' innovative and economic performance in the 1975-1990 period. Aggregate indicators of sectoral specialization are introduced, showing the extent to which countries concentrate their innovations in few fields, or spread them across several sectors. A general positive relationship is found between the degree of specialization in technology and higher rates of growth, while specialization in electronics-related fields is not associated to better economic or technological performances. The position of individual countries in these patterns is also examined, showing that …
Measuring Technological Change Through Patents And Innovation Surveys, Mario Pianta, Daniele Archibugi
Measuring Technological Change Through Patents And Innovation Surveys, Mario Pianta, Daniele Archibugi
Mario Pianta
This article provides an overview of recent research using innovation surveys and patent data as indicators of technological activity. The conceptual and methodological problems of 'measuring' technology are discussed, with a classification of the types of information which can be drawn from patent databases and from surveys of both innovations and the innovative efforts of firms. The findings and the methodological strengths and weaknesses of such studies are reviewed, considering first the evidence at the firm level, second the analysis of the industrial structure and finally the evidence at the country level and the process of globalization. The overview shows …
