A Variational Inequality Approach For Marketable Pollution Permits, Anna Nagurney, Kathy Dhanda Sep 2012

A Variational Inequality Approach For Marketable Pollution Permits, Anna Nagurney, Kathy Dhanda

Kathy K Dhanda

In this paper, we present a variational inequality framework for the modeling, qualitative analysis, and computation of equilibria in markets in pollution permits. The models developed herein allow for different modes of competitive behavior, including oligopolistic behavior, while taking into account the cost of polluting plus the prices of the licenses to pollute at different receptor points. The models deal explicitly with spatial differentiation and also ensure that the imposed environmental quality standards are met through the initial allocation of licenses. An algorithm is proposed, along with convergence results, to compute the profit-maximized quantities of the firms' products and quantities ...

Some called him the Pope of the National Football League. Others saw him as a minor deity of the mid-twentieth century's religious devotion to sport. Whatever the perspective, it is clear that Alvin "Pete" Rozelle is among the most significant figures in the history of Sport in America and the world in the Twentieth Century.

Thinking Styles And Financial Characteristics Of Selected Canadian Farm Managers, Wayne W. Howard, George L. Brinkman, Remy Lambert

Agribusiness

The thinking styles of selected Canadian farm managers are identified using the life styles inventory (LSI). The farmers'LSI scores are compared with those of a base sample of nonfarmers, and correlations between the farmers'LSI scores and financial indicators are examined. Results indicate that farmers do thinking differently than nonfarmers and that there are significant correlations between thinking styles and financial measures.

They called him The Old Roman. In 1919 Charles Comiskey, owner of the Chicago White Sox so angered his players with low salaries and his cheapskate ways that they turned on him and fixed the World Series. In 1996 White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf so angered his fellow owners by his high salaries and wild spending that they turned on him, reversed their vote of the previous three weeks, and approved the new baseball collective bargaining agreement. Maybe they should call Reinsdorf, the New Roman, or Roman Nouveau.

A Study Of The Operation Of Nigeria Airways Corporation, And The Implications For The Implementation Of Total Quality Management, Ngozi Oriaku

ETD Collection for AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library

In recent years, attempts to find solutions to business and social problems of developing nations have dominated the interest of developmental researchers. This study, in effect, has taken the same approach to finding the problems and solutions to the case of Nigeria Airways Corporation. The study is significant because it analyzed the organizational structure and operation of Nigeria Airways Corporation, with the view of developing a model for implementing TQM. In addition, some specific variables were investigated. The variables were: (1) management commitment, (2) employee involvement in the decision-making process, (3) customer input, (4) continuous improvement, and (5) organizational effectiveness ...

Cultural Value Orientations As An Antecedent To The Formation Of International Interfirm Relationships: The Developmentof Cultural Value Dimensions In A Business Context, Susan Forquer Gupta Dec 1996

Cultural Value Orientations As An Antecedent To The Formation Of International Interfirm Relationships: The Developmentof Cultural Value Dimensions In A Business Context, Susan Forquer Gupta

Doctoral Dissertations

With the importance of international interfirm relationships increasing, it becomes critical to understand the antecedents and consequences of relationship formation. Difficulty in relationships occur when firms with differing cultural value orientations attempt to engage in exchange. Culture affects the international firm in several ways: 1) difficulty in establishing a single organizational culture when a firm is comprised of multi-national employees; 2) difficulty in serving the market when cultural differences exist in the consumer; and 3) difficulty in establishing interfirm relationships across cultural boundaries. Individually, these problems are difficult to resolve, combined they can lead to failure. The first two have ...

The Politics Of Smoking: Findings Or Agendas?, Cathy A. Enz, David L. Corsun, Cheri A. Young

[Excerpt] The April 1996 issue of the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly presented our findings of a study on consumer dining attitudes and behavior after passage of the New York City Smoke-Free-Air Act. Since that time the study has prompted both public praise and criticism. While some have used this preliminary study to encourage legislators to enact smoking bans, others have prepared detailed negative critiques. The Advocacy Institute, for instance, has used the study to support its agenda of encouraging the passage of smoke-free policies in local communities. In contrast, the National Smokers Alliance (an advocacy group for the ...

National Labor Strategies In Changing Environments: Perspectives From Mexico, Maria Lorena Cook

Articles and Chapters

[Excerpt] This essay will look at the evolution of Mexican trade unions' strategies in response to changes in their political-economic environment over a period of nearly twenty-five years. The purpose of the essay is to determine which factors proved most important in shaping trade union responses to environmental changes over time, and to note how the recent economic opening and regional integration represented by NAFTA have thus far affected and are likely to affect in the future labor unions' capacity to respond to such challenges. The Mexican case is of special importance in the Latin American context due to the ...

Endogenous Sequencing In Strategic Trade Policy Games Under Uncertainty, Kit Pong Wong, Kong Wing, Clement Chow Dec 1996

Endogenous Sequencing In Strategic Trade Policy Games Under Uncertainty, Kit Pong Wong, Kong Wing, Clement Chow

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This paper examines a trade policy game with endogenous timing. A tradeoff between commitment and flexibility is identified. The timing of trade policy decisions is shown to depend on the degree of demand uncertainty. When demand uncertainty is low, countervailing duties will never be used because the home government sets its tariff first followed by the export subsidy of the foreign government. When demand uncertainty is very high, the foreign government sets its subsidy first followed by the tariff set by the home government. The foreign government actually imposes an export tax anticipating the tariff retaliation of home government to ...

Measuring The Technological Leadership Of International Joint Ventures In A Transforming Economy, Kong Wing, Clement Chow, Ka Yiu, Michael Fung Dec 1996

Measuring The Technological Leadership Of International Joint Ventures In A Transforming Economy, Kong Wing, Clement Chow, Ka Yiu, Michael Fung

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This paper introduces technical efficiency as an objective criterion for measuring the performance of international joint ventures in China. We compute the estimates of time-invariant and time-varying technical efficiency in four major manufacturing industries in Shanghai. We show that international joint ventures are in general more technically efficient than domestic firms in the industries of textile, machinery and equipment, and electronics and telecommunications equipment are widening in our sample period although the industrial reforms and active technology policies have improved the productivity of domestic firms. However, in the clothing industry, the technical efficiency of domestic firms, especially state-owned firms, is ...

Profitability And Technical Efficiency : A Performance Evaluation Of International Joint Ventures In Shanghai's Manufacturing Industries, Kong Wing, Clement Chow, Ka Yiu, Michael Fung

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This paper studies the relationship between accounting profits and efficiency of manufacturing enterprises in Shanghai during the period of 1989-1992 and examines which factors affect the profitability of manufacturing enterprises. In 1990, the industrial reform was sped up, a Chow test is used to test for the presence of any structural break and our empirical test confirms its presence. In addition, this paper also tests for the presence of ownership effects on profits. Our results indicate that the profits of international joint ventures are more persistent than the rest of ownership types and industries.

The Motives Of Hong Kong-Japanese International Joint Ventures, Mei Ling, May Wong

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This paper attempts to study Hong Kong-Japanese joint ventures from the perspectives of firm-specific advantages provided by both partners. The analysis focuses on the local partner's perspective of establishing international joint ventures (IJVs) with a Japanese multinational retailer. First, the background of the local partner, especially the company’s organizational restructuring immediately before the formation of the IJVs is examined. Second, the development and consolidation of the IJVs between the two partners by a series of IJV activities in Hong Kong, Asia, and China is described. Third, the motives behind both partners to establish the IJVs are examined. Finally ...

An Analysis Of Occupational Health In Pork Production, Terrance M. Hurley, James B. Kliebenstein, Peter Orazem

Economic Staff Paper Series

The rapid expansion of large-scale pork production has been accompanied by increasing . concerns regarding potential detrimental consequences of environmental hazards on the health of producers. This study makes use of health indicators obtained from attendees at the WorldPork Expo between 1991-and 1995 to evaluate the impact of pork production generally and of confinement production, specifically, on producer health., The analysis expands existing studies - because the larger number of participants allows for detailed analysis, both non farmers and non pork farmers are used as controls,.both objective as well as self-reported health measures ^e • considered, and personal characteristics such as height ...

Using Critical And Creative Thinking Skills To Enhance Integrity In Business Organizations, Madeline B. Conley Dec 1996

Using Critical And Creative Thinking Skills To Enhance Integrity In Business Organizations, Madeline B. Conley

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

In this thesis I explore some of the ways in which critical thinking skills can be used to facilitate the development of integrity in business organizations. The vehicle I have developed to bring these thinking skills to organizations is a one-day intensive workshop with a follow-up half-day evaluation session. In chapter one, I define integrity and compare it to Stephen Carter's definition. I also analyze five specific critical thinking skills and relate them to two actual cases: Dow Corning and fictitiously named, First National Bank. In the Dow Corning case, I argue that management might have produced a less ...

Heuristic Solutions For Loading In Flexible Manufacturing Systems, Bharatendu Srivastava, Wun-Hwa Chen Dec 1996

Heuristic Solutions For Loading In Flexible Manufacturing Systems, Bharatendu Srivastava, Wun-Hwa Chen

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Production planning in flexible manufacturing system deals with the efficient organization of the production resources in order to meet a given production schedule. It is a complex problem and typically leads to several hierarchical subproblems that need to be solved sequentially or simultaneously. Loading is one of the planning subproblems that has to addressed. It involves assigning the necessary operations and tools among the various machines in some optimal fashion to achieve the production of all selected part types. In this paper, we first formulate the loading problem as a 0-1 mixed integer program and then propose heuristic procedures based ...
