How might teaching management be artful? To address this question we discuss theoretical issues that underpin the introduction of artful approaches into the learning environment. In doing so we examine the nature of artistry and propose ways in which this translates into the learning environment.

Most academic disciplines have their symbolic and material ‘homes’ in the metropolitan centres of the United States of America (USA) and the United Kingdom (UK). Consequently researchers working in Aotearoa/NZ face a choice as to the kinds of relations they develop with these metropolitan centres. We argue that researchers tend to adopt three particular modes of response: franchise, margin and locale. In this paper we illustrate each mode by reflecting on a joint research programme, Music and Organisation. This paper provides an example of a movie that can provide lessons on successful intercultural communication. Babe provides us with a rich resource for the examination of the process of change and its pitfalls too. In addition we can see a great deal about what we would wish intercultural contact to mean for our communities, and this can provide a provocative and useful start to a discussion about intercultural issues and the development of intercultural skills.
