Treasuries, Repertories And Collections In The Production Of Common Goods, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
What types of resources are involved when members of a voluntary association combine their efforts in pursuit of joint goals or common goods? This paper examines the question from the vantage point of a rational choice theory termed endowment theory. Endowment theory is concerned with the rational allocation of productive surpluses to associations and other voluntary groups in pursuit of identified common goods. At least three distinct types of resource dowries can be identified in the current world of nonprofit associations. Treasuries are endowments of money and market-priced resources. Two other categories of "priceless" resource endowments are also evident among …

The Academic Workplace: Perception Versus Reality, Sandra E. Elman
The Academic Workplace: Perception Versus Reality, Sandra E. Elman
New England Journal of Public Policy
Why are faculty becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the quality of the academic workplace? What accounts for burnout and low morale among so many college and university faculty? Is work life for professionals any more satisfying in the business world? What can academic leaders learn from business executives who work vigorously to reenergize their enterprises? Are corporate strategies aimed at enhancing the quality of work life applicable to improving satisfaction and productivity in our colleges and universities?
These concerns were addressed by a number of education leaders at a conference on faculty work life jointly sponsored by the New England Resource …

Estimates the number of people entering the Glacier National Park backcountry for the summer season of 1988 using infrared beam-activated photography, embedded vibration sensing counters, and trailhead registration validated by personal observation. The Effect Of Government Deficits On Consumption And Interest Rates: A Two Equation Approach, Dean D. Croushore
The Effect Of Government Deficits On Consumption And Interest Rates: A Two Equation Approach, Dean D. Croushore
Economics Faculty Publications
Single-equation estimation of the consumption function often is used in testing the Ricardian equivalence theorem. This approach may be misleading, as effects on interest rates usually are ignored. This paper proposes simultaneous estimation of consumption and investment equations, with the interest rate serving to equilibrate the market. Five existing studies are replicated and subjected to sensitivity tests. The results show that the interest rate is important in the consumption function. The Ricardian equivalence theorem is tested, but the results are mixed.

Organizational And Management Characteristics Of Peace Groups, Mary Anna Culleton Colwell
Organizational And Management Characteristics Of Peace Groups, Mary Anna Culleton Colwell
Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The contemporary American peace movement is a mixture of many small and a few large organizations pursuing a wide range of goals. There has been almost no organizational research focused on these peace movement organizations (PMOs) or detailed studies of the goals, values, and activities of a large sample of PMOs.
The activity of these varied PMOs has had limited impact on public policy. Some authors cite the strength of external forces or the conservative American political culture as the key factors in this relative lack of success. There are few facts with which to evaluate these or …
