The Differential Processing Of Product Category And Noncomparable Choice Alternatives, Michael D. Johnson Dec 1989

The Differential Processing Of Product Category And Noncomparable Choice Alternatives, Michael D. Johnson

Articles and Chapters

This article contrasts consumer choice processing of single products from different categories (noncomparable alternatives) with the processing of multiple products from different categories (product category alternatives). It is unclear whether choosing among single or multiple alternatives from different product categories will drastically affect choice processing. Theoretically, the processing of product categories should be more hierarchical or top-down, and the processing of noncomparables should be more constructive or bottom-up. The results reported here support the theoretical predictions and demonstrate the perceptual and processing differences between the two types of choices.

Developing A Compensation Strategy, George T. Milkovich, Renae F. Broderick Dec 1989

Developing A Compensation Strategy, George T. Milkovich, Renae F. Broderick

CAHRS Working Paper Series

[Excerpt] The management of change remains the challenge of the 1990s. The objectives of this change are to foster better performance, control costs, and enhance flexibility--all necessary to successfully compete in fierce markets. All managers are challenged by the pace and magnitude of this change. Human resource managers are not excepted, being confronted daily with questions about how to manage employees to support changes in technology, changes in organization structures, and changes in business strategy. And employees themselves are changing: in their values and expectations, their demographic diversity, their education, and their willingness to accept change.

Determinants And Consequences Of Salary Negotiations By Graduating Male And Female Mbas, Barry A. Gerhart, Sara L. Rynes Dec 1989

Determinants And Consequences Of Salary Negotiations By Graduating Male And Female Mbas, Barry A. Gerhart, Sara L. Rynes

CAHRS Working Paper Series

Although it has been suggested that women negotiate over salaries less frequently than men, there is little empirical evidence on this point. Moreover, outside of laboratory settings, there are no investigations of whether, or to what extent, such negotiations actually payoff in higher salary outcomes for either men or women. Using a power and dependence theoretical framework, the present research investigated the salary negotiating behaviors and starting salary outcomes of 205 graduating MBA students. Results did not support the notion that women negotiate less than men. However, women did obtain lower monetary returns to negotiation (4.3% starting salary increment ...

Comparing The Performance Appraisal Practices In Large Firms With The Directions In Research Literature: Learning More And More About Less And Less, Robert D. Bretz Jr., George T. Milkovich, Walter Read Dec 1989

Comparing The Performance Appraisal Practices In Large Firms With The Directions In Research Literature: Learning More And More About Less And Less, Robert D. Bretz Jr., George T. Milkovich, Walter Read

CAHRS Working Paper Series

Managers responsible for the performance appraisal practices of the Fortune 100 were surveyed to describe their firm's current practices and to solicit their views regarding important issues related to these practices. First the results of the survey are reported. These results are compared to the current research directions and issues discussed in human resource journals over the past five years. Survey results reveal that performance appraisal systems in large firms were designed primarily by human resource specialists, with limited input from either managers or employees. Objective based plans are far and away the most widely used. Little concern over ...

The Development Of U.S. Agricultural Research And Education: An Economic Perspective, Wallace E. Huffman, Robert E. Evenson Dec 1989

The Development Of U.S. Agricultural Research And Education: An Economic Perspective, Wallace E. Huffman, Robert E. Evenson

Economic Staff Paper Series

This part examines the impact of U.S. agricultural research and education on agricultural productivity. Chapter 10 reviews the principles of productivity index number construction, examines issues in sector and regional productivity measurement, and summarizes new estimates of crop .and livestock productivity for U.S. regions and states. The Delta region has the highest rate of crop livestock, and aggregate multiform productivity increase during 1950-82. The Corn Belt region has a relatively low rate of productivity increase during the study period and it ranked last among the ten regions in livestock productivity increases.

A Nonparametric Test For Independence Of A Multivariate Time Series, Khung G. Baek, William A. Brock Dec 1989

A Nonparametric Test For Independence Of A Multivariate Time Series, Khung G. Baek, William A. Brock

Economic Staff Paper Series

This paper develops a general nonparametric test for the null hypothesis that the vector of time series under scrutiny is temporally and cross sectionally independent. The null class of the models can be extended to include weak dependence. This test can be used to test the adequacy of a fitted model. As an application of the test we show how we test diagnostically a vector auto regressive model fitted to the given data. This procedure is legitimate because the first order asymptotic distribution of the test statistic is robust to the estimated residual vector.

Human Resource Management: A Review With Applications To Agriculture, Wayne H. Howard, Kenneth A. Mcewan Dec 1989

Human Resource Management: A Review With Applications To Agriculture, Wayne H. Howard, Kenneth A. Mcewan

Agribusiness

For years the major management concern of farm managers was farm production. In the 1970s and 1980s, the importance of finance and marketing emerged as two additional critical success factors in production agriculture. A fourth management area of growing importance to successful farming is managing labor (Thomas and Erven 1989). Total employment in farming has been steadily decreasing to less than 4% of Canada's labor force in 1984 from close to 20% in 1950 (Agriculture Canada 1984). However, the labor remaining in agriculture has been changing structure, with a greater proportion of hired labor. Hired labor accounted for 30 ...
