Playing To Win: The Effects Of Implementing Gamification Strategies In Product Marketing, Sabrina Stone
Playing To Win: The Effects Of Implementing Gamification Strategies In Product Marketing, Sabrina Stone
CMC Senior Theses
Let’s play a game. What effect do you think video games have on twenty-first-century marketing? In this age defined by its nature of digitality, capturing the attention of consumers is an arduous competition. Through market segmentation, research, and the observable variables of consumer behavior, product marketing has turned to video games as a solution to appeal to younger demographics. Gamification is an increasingly applied product marketing strategy employed to increase favorable metrics. Of those key performance indicators (KPIs), boosted measures such as click-through rates, impressions, and engagement rates suggest that gamification is a strategic opportunity to persuade consumers to take …

A Social Media Analysis Of Users, Their General Happiness, And The Impact On Marketers, Megan Hamberg
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
As the internet and social media become more prominent in today’s society, it is important for marketers and others to understand who is using these platforms and how this usage affects overall happiness. Using data gathered from the General Social Survey (GSS) 2016 Cross-Section and a survey created and distributed to Western Kentucky University (WKU) Students, this research examines the effect of demographic variables on whether or not respondents utilize Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. Then, the impact of having accounts on these social media platforms on users’ overall general happiness is analyzed. Several other regressions were run and analyzed …
Determinants Of Tipping Rates: New Findings And Extensions, Christopher Carl Olson
Determinants Of Tipping Rates: New Findings And Extensions, Christopher Carl Olson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is a movement underway to eliminate the practice of tipping restaurant servers that is gaining momentum (Goldberger, 2015). In lieu of gratuities, restaurants are simply raising menu prices or assessing a service charge and paying servers a fixed hourly wage (Kummer, 2016). Before restaurateurs can adopt such a strategy, they need to thoroughly understand the factors that affect tipping behavior in order to develop meaningful fixed wage rates that do not diminish service levels or employee morale. The first step in this process is a better understanding of the determinants of tipping rates.
The existing research has identified many …

The Economics Of Successful Billboard Advertising, Alexa Thomas
The Economics Of Successful Billboard Advertising, Alexa Thomas
Graphic Communication
This study explains the economics of billboard advertising, specifically pertaining to the internal and external elements that make them effective for both consumers and the brand. Billboards have been used as an advertising medium for more than a century, and are still used today. The question is, “What about billboards make them so effective?” Secondary research was examined to better understand the history of billboards, how they compare to other mediums, and the elements experts consider throughout the campaign process. After analyzing secondary articles and studies, primary research was conducted by interviewing a sample of consumers and experts to determine …

In this article we would like to respond to Romaniuk’s (2013) Viewpoint article "What’s (brand) love got to do with it?" and provide our point of view regarding brand love. While we agree with some of the limitations she points out in Batra et al.’s (2012) article, and acknowledge them, we disagree with her statement that there is ‘no evidence that building brand love leads to higher market share, sales or profitability’ (Romaniuk 2013, p. 185). It is conceivable that there was no evidence when she wrote the article in 2013. However, as this article illustrates, we have since 2013 …
Globalization, Expectations Model Of Economic Nationalism, And Consumer Behavior, Syed Akhter
Globalization, Expectations Model Of Economic Nationalism, And Consumer Behavior, Syed Akhter
Syed H. Akhter
Purpose – The goals of the paper are to propose, measure, and empirically test the expectations model of economic nationalism. The model posits that economic nationalism is reflected in people’s expectations of their government, domestic firms, and the general public, in terms of restricting the activities of foreign firms.
Design/methodology/approach – A confirmatory factor analysis is conducted to test the model, using the LISREL procedure.
Findings – Results show acceptable fit for the proposed model. Reliability of each of the three dimensions of economic nationalism is in the acceptable range. A nomological validity test showed that economic nationalism is related …

Parallel Sessions (Consumer Behavior): The Pakistani Consumer: Dumb Or Dumber?, Owais Hassan Shaikh
International Conference on Marketing
The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has adopted the notion of ordinary consumer for assessing confusion or deception in ‘deceptive marketing practices’ cases under Section 10 of the Competition Act, 2010i . In its first order in this area, the CCP defined ordinary consumer as a person who is ‘the usual, common or foreseeable user or buyer of the product’ (CCPa, p. 30) and differs from the ‘ordinary prudent man’ under contract law. According to the CCP, this conceptualisation of the Pakistani consumer was important for achieving the goal of implementing the Competition Act 2010 in its letter and spirit, …

With the rapidly growing importance of sustainability and corporate responsibility in a globalised world, management schools are increasingly integrating long-term economic, environmental and social issues into their teaching and research. Climate change, poverty, labour standards and human rights are among the many topics that future decision-makers will need to face in their careers. Business education needs to reflect this new reality and provide a broadened understanding of value creation in order to create …

Implementing Green Roofs On Movie Theaters And Shopping Centers: Business Cases In Profitable Sustainability, Ryan J. Miller
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis presents the business case for installing green roofs on movie theaters and shopping centers. These businesses can then derive increased profits from the environmental benefits of reduced energy use and increased stormwater retention. After presenting the basic design and benefits of a green roof, the thesis develops stand-alone business plans for a movie theater and shopping center. The author finds that green roofs are a profitable sustainability solution for the commercial enterprise.

Obesity, Educational Attainment, And State Economic Welfare, Martin W. Sivula Ph.D.
MBA Faculty Conference Papers & Journal Articles
For the first time in history, estimates of the overweight people in the world rival estimates of those malnourished. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2002) ranked obesity among the top 10 risks to human health worldwide. In the early 1960s, nearly half of the Americans were overweight and 13% were obese. Today some 64% of U.S. adults are overweight and 30.5% are obese. Even more alarming, twice as many U.S. children are overweight than were twenty years ago, a 66% increase. Non-communicable diseases impose a heavy economic burden on already strained health systems. Health is a key determinant of development …
