His Standardization In Developing Countries: Use Of Boundary Objects To Enable Multiple Translations, Edwin E. Nyella Mr., Honest Kimaro Dr.
The African Journal of Information Systems
Standardization and integration of Health Information Systems (HIS) in most developing countries has been reported as a complex undertaking due to poverty, multiplicity of diseases and diverse actors working in various initiatives within the healthcare context. The need for collaborative investments in HIS strengthening is highlighted by major actors such as WHO, as significant to achieve an integrated HIS. However, despite the fact that involvement of multiple partners is desirable as a vehicle to attain an integrated HIS, entailed challenges should be understood and well managed. By drawing on the concept of translation from actor network theory supplemented by the …

A Use Intention Model For Location-Based Mobile Advertising, Moses M. Thiga, Joseph Siror, Jason Githeko, Kageni Njagi
The African Journal of Information Systems
The use of location-based mobile advertising to deliver context specific information from businesses to clients has the potential to help them increase revenues, personalize offerings and reduce marketing costs. However, there is a lack of adoption of this emergent mode of advertising among micro-enterprises. This study examined the underlying reasons for this lack of adoption using an exploratory factor analytic study based on an adaptation of the Technology Acceptance Model with the choice of technology as an additional factor. Data was collected in a survey involving 304 micro-enterprises by means of structured questionnaires and interview schedules. A majority of micro-enterprises …

User Perceived Service Quality Of Mhealth Services In Developing Countries, Shahriar Akter, John D'Ambra, Pradeep Ray
Shahriar Akter
Health challenges present arguably the most significant barrier to sustainable global development. The introduction of ICT in healthcare, especially the application of mobile communications, has created the potential to transform healthcare delivery by making it more accessible, affordable and effective across the developing world. However, there is growing concerns about the quality of such services with regard to the robustness of the service delivery platform, knowledge and competence of the provider, privacy and security of information and above all, their effects on satisfaction, future use intentions and quality of life. The aim of this paper is to explore, analyze and …

Fit And Misfit Of Plural Sourcing Strategies And It-Enabled Process Integration Capabilities: Consequences Of Firm Performance In The U.S. Electric Utility Industry, Arun Rai, Ilgaz Arikan, Jessica Pye, Amrit Tiwana
Computer Information Systems Faculty Publications
Recent work has shown that a firm’s plural sourcing strategy, which determines how much it chooses to make versus how much it chooses to buy, requires consideration of the complementarities and constraints that affect the differential advantages of making and buying. Elaborating on this perspective, we theorize how (mis)fit between a firm’s plural sourcing strategy of simultaneously making and buying and its development of information technology (IT) enabled interfirm and intrafirm process integration capabilities influences firm performance in deregulated markets. We position our theory development and empirical tests in the context of the power-generation segment of the U.S. electric utility …
Information Technology Impacts On Firm Performance: An Extension Of Kohli And Devaraj (2003), Anand Jeyaraj, Rajiv Sabherwal
Information Technology Impacts On Firm Performance: An Extension Of Kohli And Devaraj (2003), Anand Jeyaraj, Rajiv Sabherwal
ISSCM Faculty Publications
Despite the importance of investing in information technology, research on business value of information technology (BVIT) shows contradictory results, raising questions about the reasons for divergence. Kohli and Devaraj (2003) provided valuable insights into this issue based on a meta-analysis of 66 BVIT studies. This paper extends Kohli and Devaraj by examining the influences on BVIT through a meta-analysis of 303 studies published between 1990 and 2013. We found that BVIT increases when the study does not consider IT investment, does not use profitability measure of value, and employs primary data sources, fewer IT-related antecedents, and larger sample size. Considerations …

School of Professional Studies
The capstone project is a culminating experience whereby students choose to research a topic that is relevant in their field of study and have been highly regarded as important learning activities. The capstone allows students to use research, analytical, problem solving and evaluation skills they have learned in the course of the graduate program. McGill indicates the benefit of the completion of a capstone project not only in gaining knowledge in capstone but also in learning how to apply the knowledge gained in other courses in the major (McGill, 2012). Currently, COPACE (College of Professional and Continuing Education) has three …
A Work System Perspective On Adoption Entities, Adoption Processes, And Post-Adoption Compliance And Noncompliance, Steven Alter
A Work System Perspective On Adoption Entities, Adoption Processes, And Post-Adoption Compliance And Noncompliance, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
This conceptual contribution responds to the invitation to the DIGIT 2015 Call for Papers “to reflect on and move forward from the dominant stream of research work on technology acceptance.” The dominant stream of research is basically about antecedents and correlates of adoption and continuation of use for hardware/software artifacts. This paper uses work system theory and several of its extensions to identify directions for adoption research that have been realized partially, but not nearly to the extent possible. It focuses on three general issues:
1) what adoption means in the context of work systems,
2) how adoption occurs, and …
Five Seemingly Insurmountable Challenges Related To Attaining Long-Term Value From Theorizing About Information Systems, Steven Alter
Five Seemingly Insurmountable Challenges Related To Attaining Long-Term Value From Theorizing About Information Systems, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
Recent articles such as Avison and Malaurent (2014) and Grover and Lyytinen (2015) question taken-for-granted assumptions about the centrality of theory in research published in leading journals and the near necessity of following repetitive scripts that sometimes are an obstacle to creativity. This paper goes a step further by providing examples and observations that illustrate five seemingly insurmountable challenges related to attaining long-term value from theorizing about information systems.
1) Divergent definitions of basic terms makes it extremely difficult to accumulate IS knowledge.
2) The IS discipline seems to take for granted that knowledge must take the form of theory. …

Determinants Of Vendor Profitability In Two Contractual Regimes: An Empirical Analysis Of Enterprise Resource Planning Projects, Stefan Hoermann, Tobias Hlavka, Michael Schermann, Helmut Krcmar
Information Systems and Analytics
In this paper, we investigate the effects of four determinants of vendor profitability in enterprise resource planning (ERP) outsourcing projects under two contractual regimes: fixed price (FP) contracts and time and material (TM) contracts. We hypothesize that effect sizes are larger under FP contracts than under TM contracts. From a transaction cost economics perspective, we hypothesize that project uncertainty and project size are negatively associated with vendor profitability. From a knowledge-based view of the firm perspective, we hypothesize that industry knowledge and client knowledge are positively associated with vendor profitability. We tested these hypotheses on a comprehensive archival data set …

Online Manufacturer Referral To Heterogeneous Retailers, Hao Wu, Gangshu (George) Cai, Jian Chen, Chwen Sheu
Online Manufacturer Referral To Heterogeneous Retailers, Hao Wu, Gangshu (George) Cai, Jian Chen, Chwen Sheu
Information Systems and Analytics
Since the development of the Internet, thousands of manufacturers have been referring consumers visiting their websites to some or all of their retailers. Through a model with one manufacturer and two heterogeneous retailers, we investigate whether it is an equilibrium for the manufacturer to refer consumers exclusively to a retailer or nonexclusively to both retailers. Our analysis indicates that nonexclusive referral is the manufacturer's equilibrium choice if the referral segment market size is sufficiently large; otherwise, exclusive referral is the equilibrium choice. In exclusive referral, the manufacturer would refer consumers to the more cost-efficient and smaller retailer. In the presence …

Examining The Dynamics Of Cooperation Between Competing Firms In Their R&D Activities (R&D Co-Opetition), Fakhraddin Maroofi
The South East Asian Journal of Management
The relationship between collaboration with competitors and goods innovation performance was investigated along with the moderating effect of the innovating firm's technological capability. The hypothesis that collaboration with competitors has an inverted U-shaped relationship with goods innovation performance was tested using data on new goods introductions from 749 Iranian firms. The results support the balance between competition and collaboration by confirming that collaboration with competitors contributes considerably to successful goods innovation. The positive influences of co-optation certainly seem consistent with the cooperative arguments that collaboration with competitors increases absorptive capacity, improves information exchange and facilitates joint problem solving. The results …

The South East Asian Journal of Management
This paper reports the sources of productivity growth of 23 Indonesian airports foryears 2006-2010. Using input slack-based productivity index (ISP), we disaggregatetotal factor productivity change into each input productivity change. Apron areaand terminal area are chosen as input variables while aircrafts’ movement is theoutput. By classifying the airports based on two operators, this study finds thatairports under the management of Angkasa Pura 1 (AP1) show higher productivitygrowth than Angkasa Pura 2 (AP2), whose growth is mainly driven by technicalprogress in apron areas. Moreover, the productivity decline of AP2 was mostlydue to inefficient use of terminal areas.

How Are Concerns About Errors And Ethics Related To Demands For Information Systems Audits?, Joseph S. Mollick Ph. D
Communications of the IIMA
What factors affect individuals' demands that information systems (IS) audits are implemented in the organizations with which they do business? Using concepts and constructs from theoretical literature on individuals’ concerns about organizational information management practices, we build a theoretical model that can explain and predict individuals' demand for information systems audit in organizations. Using data from U. S. university students, we empirically test two hypotheses using a multiple regression model. It was found that students’ concern about error in data and their concern about organizational ethics of information management positively affect students’ demand for IS audit at U. S. universities.

The Effects Of Text Complexity On Online Review Helpfulness, Michael J. Hine
Communications of the IIMA
This research reported in this paper extends the literature on the helpfulness of online reviews. Previous research has assessed online reviews using standard unidimensional readability algorithms. This research extends previous work by investigating a multidimensional framework, and associated measures, of text complexity and its impact on the helpfulness of online reviews. Results show that as the amount of passive voice and negation in online reviews increase, the helpfulness of said review decreases. Other significant predictors of review helpfulness include word meaningfulness, lexical diversity, and the number of modifiers per noun phrase.

It Certification: Demand, Characteristics And Integration Into Traditional University Mis Curriculum, Mohammad A. Rob
Communications of the IIMA
The value of IT certification is a subject of debate. IT magazines suggest that certifications can provide opportunities for new positions, promotions or salary increases to existing employees. Research suggests that IT certification can boost a fresh graduate’s profile to garner the attention of a hiring manager. Research also suggests that certification, education and experience are complimentary factors in the future job prospects of a candidate. For years, educators have been suggesting to include IT certifications in the traditional computing curricula of colleges and universities. However, due to a dearth of knowledge and commitment, faculty members have been reluctant to …

Consumer-To-Consumer Ecommerce: Acceptance And Intended Behavior, Lori N. K. Leonard, Kiku Jones
Communications of the IIMA
Consumer-to-consumer ecommerce is used by individuals who come together to buy and sell products. With the widespread use of this commerce environment comes the need to explore potential influences on its acceptance or one’s intention to use it. Using the technology acceptance model, the theory of planned behavior, and ecommerce success theory, a research model is proposed. After collecting 94 survey responses, the model is examined using regression analysis. The findings indicate that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude, and satisfaction influence one’s acceptance of or intention to use consumer-to-consumer ecommerce. A discussion of the study findings is provided.
