The following report will walk you through this analysis beginning with an economic outlook, which in turn influences our portfolio design. The designated sector analysts then assess the portfolio holdings of each sector and determine whether the positions align with our forecast. This assessment includes a broad sector outlook, as well as a fundamental outlook for each individual holding. The decision to buy, hold, or sell is based on the sector analysts’ valuation. Finally, the report concludes with an overall portfolio assessment given the proposed changes supported by mean variance efficiency and a value at risk diagnosis.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) supports franchising by backing up loans issued by regular lending organizations. However, the SBA does not directly consider firm strategies as part of its lending process. To appreciate how franchisor characteristics influence franchisee failure, we developed a heuristic model using the methodology and power of predictive analytics. We use multi-year data from the World Franchising Council’s surveys on franchisors’ characteristics and from the SBA on franchisee loan defaults. The data cover 271 diverse US franchise chains that are present in both databases. Our model predicts potential defaults of SBA-backed loans issued to American franchisees and …

We believe that the U.S. economy will continue growing modestly through 2013 and pick up speed in 2014. We have positioned the portfolio to take advantage of a slowly growing economy by slightly over-weighting the consumer discretionary, energy, industrials, technology, and health care sectors as these have traditionally benefited from recoveries. Accordingly, the consumer durables, financials, materials, telecommunications, and utilities sectors were under-weighted. Although the future is unusually cloudy, we reached this conclusion based on expected economic growth rates, favorable market P/E ratios and continued low interest rates.

Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions And Country Risk Ratings: Evidence From U.S. Financials, Halil Kiymaz

This study reports how country risk and macroeconomic conditions influence the wealth gains of U.S. financial firms involved in international mergers and takeovers. The findings suggest that U.S. financials experience weakly significant wealth gains around announcement date. The wealth gains are significant for takeovers in Latin America. There are also differences in wealth gains of subsector affiliations of financial firms. While banks experiencing wealth loss, both insurance and investment services firms having significant wealth gains. The country risk, including economic, political, and financial risk ratings, help to explain the wealth gains to financial bidders.

The dramatic increase in investment by Chinese SOEs in overseas oil assets is primarily driven by energy security concerns. Whether such investment will benefit or harm energy security of other countries is hotly contested. On one hand, this investment can supplement the overall lack of investment in the sector, benefiting all consumers. On the other hand, it may exacerbate environmental and political problems associated with fossil fuels.

Tax compliance is an important issue for governments and the public alike. To meet public needs and fund public mandates, firms around the world are expected to comply with tax laws. Factors that are related to organizational (firm) tax compliance have not been sufficiently examined in the literature. Due to the increasing global influence of transition economies, factors associated with firm tax compliance in transition economies are particularly of interest. Based on a sample of over 5,000 firms from 22 former Soviet Bloc transition economies, we find that higher levels of corruption and higher levels of particularized trust (reliance on …

The desired asset class allocation distributes only the minimum to cover the fixed income and cash constraint; the rest of the portfolio is allocated to equities. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the brainstorming component of Statement of Auditing Standards (SAS) No. 99 influences decision aid use and reliance, and the effectiveness of fraud risk assessment. The research framework links the influences of the fraud assessment setting and decision aid reliance. The hypotheses are tested in an experiment with two manipulated factors: setting (group or individual) and decision aid (provided or not provided).
