Minority Entrepreneurs And Fast Failure, John Taylor Jensen Sep 2018

Minority Entrepreneurs And Fast Failure, John Taylor Jensen

Brigham Young University Journal of Public Law

Minority businesses now make up more than a quarter of all U.S. businesses; yet, due to discriminatory lending practices, cultural aversions to debt, and limited access to capital, these businesses continue to have higher failure rates. At the same time, m inority entrepreneurs are more likely to rely on informal lending and less likely to turn to bankruptcy for relief of debt. Doing so slows down failure for minority entrepreneurs — contra Silicon Valley’s new mantra, “fail fast” — and diminishes the minority entrepreneur’s ability to efficiently reallocate resources towards more productive ventures. In this essay, I distinguish the minority …

Journal of Research Initiatives

This project outlines a conceptual framework to help make sense of opportunities in an effort to recognize conditions for failure and establish paths toward success. In finding success, three distinct themes emerge from the literature: capacity, passion, and relevance. The CPR Success and Failure Analysis framework is intended to be a framework for success. Displayed as a Venn diagram, the framework includes domains of capacity, passion, and relevance, which are connected in the center through presence. The framework may serve as a theoretical lens for research, in-person and online educational opportunities, self-reflection, business coaching/consulting, college and career planning, and various …

Competitive Strategies Of Minority-Owned Small Businesses.Pdf, Peter Smith

Peter Smith

Leaders of minority-owned businesses earn less revenue on average than their nonminority counterparts, even when both sets of leaders operate in the same industries. Among the factors leading to this earnings discrepancy is the lack of access that leaders of minority-owned businesses have to high-revenue opportunities. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies that some leaders of minority-owned small businesses use to compete for contracts in high-revenue industries. The study population comprised 3 owners of minority-owned small marketing consultancy firms headquartered in the Southeastern United States. Teece and Pisano’s dynamic capabilities view served as the …

Does Trust Prevent Undeclared Work? An Evaluation Of The Social Actor Approach, Colin C. Williams

In recent decades, a burgeoning literature has brought out of the shadows the magnitude of the undeclared economy. This reveals that the undeclared economy is a persistent feature of contemporary economies. With the equivalent of 17.9 per cent of GDP not declared to the authorities in the European Union in 2016 [1], undeclared work representing 14.3 per cent of gross value added in the private sector in 2013 [2] and 4 per cent of EU28 citizens conducting undeclared work [3], tackling the undeclared economy is not some minor issue. Addressing this practice is important. This is not only because of …

Assessing The Value Of Ventures: Crowd Investors Vs. Sophisticated Investors, Marco Bade Aug 2018

Assessing The Value Of Ventures: Crowd Investors Vs. Sophisticated Investors, Marco Bade

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Recent regulatory approaches in crowdfunding democratize capital markets. Adverse wealth effects may arise because of information asymmetry. Firoozi et al. (2017) argue that crowdfunding has wealth-reducing effects on crowd investors because they systematically assign less value to good ventures, and more to bad ventures. This paper aims to take a more differentiated perspective by incorporating two dimensions of uncertainty determining ventures’ value. It further takes into account that different investor types learn different information. This yields new findings concerning the assessment of venture value by crowd investors and sophisticated investors. Crowd investors’ may be able to better assess venture value, …

Evaluating Competing Perspectives Towards Undeclared Work: Some Lessons From Bulgaria, Colin C. Williams Aug 2018

Evaluating Competing Perspectives Towards Undeclared Work: Some Lessons From Bulgaria, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

When explaining and tackling the undeclared economy in Central
and Eastern Europe, participants have been conventionally viewed
as rational economic actors. They engage in undeclared work
when the benefits outweigh the costs. Participation is thus
deterred by increasing the sanctions and/or probability of being
caught. Recently, however, an alternative social actor approach
has emerged which views participants as engaging in undeclared
work when their norms, values and beliefs (i.e. citizen morale) do
not align with laws and regulations (i.e. state morale). Here, therefore,
initiatives to develop greater symmetry between civic and
state morale are pursued. To evaluate the validity and …

Gdp And Refugees: An Economic Argument For Accepting Refugees, Michael Jarman

Marriott Student Review

This paper examines both the costs and benefits associated with accepting refugees and purports to show that accepting refugees is economically beneficial; increasing GDP in the long run. There is a substantial cost associated with accepting and sustaining refugees, both in providing necessities and in the impact that refugees have on local job markets. However, longitudinal data pulled from Denmark, Germany, and Turkey has shown that local markets do recover from the initial shock. Over time as refugees integrate into their host communities, they provide dividends in the form of increasing demand, greater mobility and wage increases for locals, and …

Predictive Power? Textual Analysis In Mergers & Acquisitions, Philip E. Morgan Aug 2018

Predictive Power? Textual Analysis In Mergers & Acquisitions, Philip E. Morgan

Marriott Student Review

Modern corporations utilize mergers and acquisitions as strategies to develop shareholder value today more than ever before, yet the need for understanding firms’ rationale and strategy is critical in predicting post-merger stock performance for all investors. I apply the interpretive power of textual analysis and regression to a corpus of SEC mergers and acquisitions public company filings between 1994-2017. Not only do I challenge the statistically significant correlation between word content and post-transaction abnormal stock returns, but I also characterize the effects of time segments, transaction size, and industry variation across time. As a final application, I consider sentiment analysis …

In a competitive global market place, technology adoption and application in supply chain is becoming increasingly important as companies seek to acquire competitive advantages. One Shot Pub: A Business Plan, Ben Dale

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

Industry Analysis

One Shot Pub proposes to merge two mature industries into one lucrative one. The average bar makes a profit of $5,000 monthly, but with game commissions, 3D printing, and private room reservations we will increase that to roughly $8,000 a month in average profit with the peak season coming in the late summer and early winter months. The biggest factors to utilize to increase those earnings would be to sell more 3D printed goods and to carefully monitor the drink prices and categorize them into winners, losers, re-pricers, and too popular to have a stockout based on pour …

The Influence Of High-Performance Work Systems And Intangible Strategic Resources On The Entrepreneurial Orientation-Firm Performance Relationship., Shankar Naskar Aug 2018

The Influence Of High-Performance Work Systems And Intangible Strategic Resources On The Entrepreneurial Orientation-Firm Performance Relationship., Shankar Naskar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The entrepreneurship literature indicates that entrepreneurially oriented firms perform better and grow faster than firms that are conservatively oriented. Firms with an entrepreneurial orientation (EO) jointly exhibit risk-taking, innovative and proactive behaviors. The EO-firm performance relationship is a well-established one. However, scholars have bemoaned the lack of focus on internal organizational factors that may influence or affect the nature of the relationship. My dissertation uses the framework of the resource-based theory of the firm to argue that the influence of EO on performance is contingent on the resources and the internal organizing context (organizing capability) of a firm. The resource-based …

The Shellfish Corner: The Promises Of Aquaculture And Caveat Emptor, Michael A. Rice Jul 2018

The Shellfish Corner: The Promises Of Aquaculture And Caveat Emptor, Michael A. Rice

Michael A Rice

For at least five decades in America there has been a fascination about aquaculture as a means to "feed the world" in a sustainable way. Periodic reporting by the popular press has generated excitement about the potential of aquaculture among the general public and often this excitement often leads to unrealistic expectations and engagement in unsound business decision making by the novices in the field. Aquaculture entrepreneurs and investors are urged to exercise good judgement by sticking with with fundamentally sound business planning while maintaining realistic business expectations.
